Family Adventure in Kyoto: Exploring Culture and Nature
Day 12: A Day of Tranquility and Culinary Delights in Kyoto's Higashiyama District
Explore Kyoto's serene Higashiyama, from Ginkaku-ji's Zen gardens to Maruyama Park's winter beauty. Savor local flavors for a perfect day.
Silver Pavilion and Park Strolls
Today was a day of embracing the quiet beauty of Kyoto, a stark contrast to the bustling markets and vibrant shrines we've explored thus far. The Higashiyama district, with its temples, gardens, and traditional eateries, offered a peaceful retreat for Klara, Mateo, and me. It was a day of gentle exploration and savoring the subtle joys of Japanese culture.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu. The small, family-run izakaya was a cozy spot to start the day. We enjoyed a selection of grilled fish, miso soup, and tamagoyaki. It was the perfect fuel for a day of walking and exploration.

We then made our way to Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion. Unlike the Golden Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji exudes a more understated elegance. The temple's Zen gardens were particularly impressive, offering a peaceful retreat. Mateo, surprisingly, was captivated by the meticulously raked sand patterns, asking questions about their meaning and the monks who create them. The winter air was crisp, but the beauty of the gardens warmed us from the inside out. While it may not be as overtly flashy as Kinkaku-ji, there's a subtle charm to Ginkaku-ji that really resonated with me. It embodies the Japanese aesthetic of *wabi-sabi*, finding beauty in simplicity and imperfection.

The beauty of Ginkaku-ji lies not in its silver coating, but in the harmony it strikes with its surrounding landscape, a testament to the Japanese appreciation for natural elegance.
After soaking in the serene atmosphere of Ginkaku-ji, we strolled through Maruyama Park. Even in winter, the park held a certain charm. The snow-dusted trees and frozen ponds created a tranquil scene. Mateo enjoyed running around and playing in the snow, while Klara and I took in the scenery. I could only imagine how beautiful this park must be during cherry blossom season. Perhaps we'll have to return in the spring someday. We even saw some locals setting up for what looked like a small winter festival, complete with food stalls and traditional music. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding – stumbling upon authentic cultural experiences that aren't necessarily in the guidebooks.

For lunch, we ventured into Yasakadori Enraku, enticed by its promise of traditional Kyoto cuisine in a private setting. Tucked away behind Kenninji Temple, the restaurant exuded a calm atmosphere, perfect for a quiet family meal. We savored the delicate dashi flavors of their dishes, with the oden being a particular highlight. Mateo, who can sometimes be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring a whole bowl of udon noodles. Klara and I enjoyed some local sake, a perfect complement to the meal.

With our bellies full and spirits lifted, we decided to do some shopping at Kyoto LOFT. This multi-story emporium was a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. From innovative home goods to trendy stationery, we found a plethora of unique items. Klara, with her architect's eye, was particularly drawn to the minimalist designs and functional aesthetics. I picked up a few souvenirs for friends back in Potsdam, while Mateo was thrilled to find a new origami set. The store was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to discover the latest trends in Japanese design.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine and Kaiseki style dining. The multi-course meal was a culinary journey, with each dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful grilled fish, every bite was a delight. Mateo even tried a few new things, like the sea urchin and the pickled vegetables. The service was impeccable, with the staff explaining each dish in detail. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

Though some online reviews of Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga Honten mention mixed experiences, particularly with textures and flavors being challenging for some palates, I found the experience to be a worthwhile immersion into traditional Kyoto cuisine. I always appreciate the opportunity to broaden my culinary horizons, even if it means stepping outside of my comfort zone.
As we walked back to Hotel Grand Bach Select Kyoto, the city lights twinkled around us. Today was a reminder that travel isn't just about ticking off famous landmarks; it's about embracing the local culture, savoring new flavors, and creating lasting memories with family. It’s these moments of quiet joy and shared experiences that make our family adventures so special. As much as I love the energy of a bustling city, days like today remind me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things.

Tomorrow, we're venturing a bit further afield to visit Sanzen-in Temple and Kuramadera Temple. I've heard that Sanzen-in is particularly beautiful in the winter, with its snow-covered moss gardens. And Kuramadera, with its mountaintop location, promises stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We'll also be stopping by Rocking Bar ING for a nightcap. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this enchanting city.
I am also glad that I remembered to pack Mateo's favorite snacks, as they came in handy during our strolls. However, I am still kicking myself for forgetting the travel adapter. It has made charging our devices a bit challenging, but we are making it work. And while I packed warm clothing, I wish I had remembered to bring a raincoat. The weather in Kyoto can be unpredictable, and a raincoat would have been useful during our time in Maruyama Park. These are minor inconveniences, though, and they certainly haven't dampened our spirits.
I’m continually grateful for these opportunities to share new experiences with Klara and Mateo. It’s a privilege to witness the world through their eyes, and I hope that these adventures are shaping them into curious, open-minded individuals. And who knows, maybe Mateo will even develop a taste for sea urchin!
Until tomorrow,
Juan
