A Family Adventure to the River of Five Colors
Day 8: A Fond Farewell to Caño Cristales: Reflecting on the River of Five Colors
Saying goodbye to Caño Cristales with cherished memories of vibrant colors, family adventures, and Colombian hospitality.
Adios, Caño Cristales!
As our Colombian adventure draws to a close, it’s hard to believe our time exploring the mesmerizing Caño Cristales is already over. Today was all about savoring the last moments in this vibrant region, soaking in the local culture, and reflecting on the kaleidoscope of experiences we've shared as a family. From the breathtaking 'River of Five Colors' to the warmth of the people, this trip has been nothing short of magical, leaving us with memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Our final day in La Macarena started with a hearty Colombian breakfast at Café de Lithos. It’s a cozy spot, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and arepas filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our last day. Sofia was particularly fond of the hot chocolate, declaring it the best she’d ever had – a high compliment coming from my little connoisseur! Isabella and I enjoyed the arepas with cheese, a simple yet satisfying start to the day.

After breakfast, we decided to take a stroll through Puerto los Mangos. It's a bustling little spot, and it was fascinating to watch the local fishermen bringing in their morning catch. The vibrant colors of the boats bobbing in the water, combined with the sounds of lively chatter, painted a vivid picture of daily life in La Macarena. Sofia was particularly intrigued by the different types of fish, and I found myself explaining the intricacies of the local ecosystem to her, something I realized I enjoy doing more and more as she grows older.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to los fundadores Main Park. It’s a charming green space right in the heart of La Macarena, offering a tranquil escape from the town's hustle and bustle. We took a leisurely walk, admiring the lush vegetation and the beautifully landscaped gardens. Sofia, ever the explorer, was fascinated by the local flora, pointing out colorful flowers and interesting plants. The park was alive with activity; families picnicking, children playing, and couples strolling hand-in-hand, all enjoying the pleasant weather. It was a perfect snapshot of community life, and we felt grateful to be a part of it, even if just for a little while.

Lunchtime found us at Restaurante Llano Y Leyenda, where we indulged in authentic Colombian flavors. I decided to try the bandeja paisa, a hearty platter of rice, beans, meat, and plantains – a true taste of the region. Isabella opted for the grilled fish, which was fresh and flavorful, while Sofia happily munched on some arepas. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with traditional music playing in the background, enhancing the overall dining experience. It was a fitting way to bid farewell to the local cuisine that had delighted our taste buds throughout our stay.

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower, we ventured to LA BALSA RESTAURANTE BAR for a final taste of the local nightlife. While it was a bit early for the typical bar scene, the atmosphere was still relaxed and inviting. We enjoyed some refreshing drinks, reminiscing about our adventures of the past week. Sofia sipped on a fruit juice, while Isabella and I savored a local beer, toasting to the memories we had created. The bar offered a stunning view of the Guayabero River, providing a picturesque backdrop to our farewell drinks.

For our last dinner in La Macarena, we chose RestaurAnte El Caporal, known for its traditional Colombian dishes and warm ambiance. The restaurant did not disappoint. We savored every bite of our meal, knowing it was our last taste of authentic Colombian cuisine for a while. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel like part of their family. As we finished our dinner, we exchanged heartfelt goodbyes with the staff, expressing our gratitude for their hospitality and kindness.

Reflecting on our time here, I realize how much this trip has meant to us. Seeing Caño Cristales with my family has been a dream come true. The vibrant colors of the river, the lush landscapes, and the warmth of the Colombian people have left an indelible mark on our hearts. It’s been especially rewarding to share this experience with Sofia, watching her curiosity and appreciation for nature grow with each passing day. I am so glad we chose to come during June, when the river is at its most colorful.
Of course, not everything went perfectly according to plan. I still regret forgetting the extra memory card for my camera. There were countless moments I wish I could have captured more vividly. I also wish I had remembered to pack our sunglasses! But these minor hiccups are all part of the adventure, and they’ve taught us valuable lessons about being prepared and adaptable.
Looking ahead, our journey back to Toronto will be filled with reflections and shared stories. We’ll carry the spirit of Caño Cristales with us, inspiring us to seek out new adventures and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll return to this magical corner of Colombia, to once again witness the ‘River of Five Colors’ in all its glory.
As we prepare for our departure, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Caño Cristales has not only captivated our senses but has also strengthened our bond as a family. It’s a reminder that the most valuable souvenirs are not material possessions, but the memories we create and the connections we forge along the way. Until next time, Colombia!
Even though the trip is officially over, I am already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps we can explore more of South America, or maybe venture to Southeast Asia. The possibilities are endless, and I am excited to see where our travels will take us next.
