Islands of Light and Lore

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to absorb more of Yakushima's unique character. It wasn't about scaling peaks or plunging into deep forests, but rather about appreciating the island's connection to the sea and its rich cultural tapestry. It was a day to reflect, to learn, and to simply be present in this captivating corner of the world.

My day began, as it often does on these trips, with a hearty breakfast. I decided to try the Yakushima Airport Restaurant again. While not the most exotic choice, it was convenient and offered a familiar start to the day before I set off to explore. With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards my first destination: the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse.

The drive to the lighthouse was beautiful, with glimpses of the coastline peeking through the lush greenery. As I approached the lighthouse, the views opened up, revealing the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse itself, a gleaming white structure against the blue backdrop, was a sight to behold. Though I couldn't go inside, standing there, feeling the sea breeze and gazing out at the horizon, I felt a sense of peace and connection to the maritime history of this island. I imagined the countless ships that had relied on this beacon over the years, navigating these waters safely under its watchful eye.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After spending some time at the lighthouse, soaking in the views and the salty air, I made my way to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore.

Nestled by the scenic Miyanoura River, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the island's past and the traditions of its people.

Inside, I was immediately drawn to the exhibits showcasing artifacts from ancient times to the present. From prehistoric pottery to locally produced textiles and old fishing tools, each item told a story of life on Yakushima. One of the most impressive displays was a real-scale replica of a traditional house built before World War II on nearby Kuchinoerabu Island. The bamboo structure, reconstructed from old photographs, offered a tangible connection to the island's architectural heritage.

I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the museum, reading the exhibits (thankfully, there was an English pamphlet available) and imagining what life must have been like for the early inhabitants of Yakushima. It struck me how closely the people were tied to the land and the sea, relying on the natural resources around them for their survival and prosperity.

For lunch, I decided to try Iso no Kaori, a local restaurant known for its seafood.

I opted for a set meal featuring fresh sashimi and grilled fish, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were simple yet exquisite. It was a true taste of Yakushima, and I savored every bite.

In the late afternoon, after my museum visit and satisfying lunch, I found myself with some free time. Remembering a recommendation from a local I met earlier in the trip, I decided to check out Seirios, a small bar known for its relaxed atmosphere.

It turned out to be a great choice. The bar was cozy and inviting, and the bartender was friendly and welcoming. I ordered a local craft beer and struck up a conversation with a couple of other patrons, who shared some interesting insights about life on Yakushima.

As the evening approached, I made my way to DINING CAFE BAR SLOW for dinner.

The name intrigued me, and I was curious to see what it had to offer. The restaurant had a laid-back vibe, and the menu featured a mix of Japanese and Western dishes. I decided to try a local specialty, a pork dish cooked with miso and vegetables. It was flavorful and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a leisurely stroll along the coast, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. The sky was clear, and the stars were out in full force, creating a magical ambiance. It was a perfect ending to a day that had been both enriching and relaxing.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kigensugi Cedar, another of Yakushima's ancient giants, and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. I'm also looking forward to trying a new breakfast spot, Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. Before that though, I might check out Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop for some souvenirs.

As I reflect on today, I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience a different side of Yakushima. It's not just about the hiking and the stunning landscapes; it's also about the history, the culture, and the people who call this island home. It's about slowing down, taking the time to appreciate the simple things, and connecting with the essence of a place. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me. It's a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses. If you ever have the chance to visit, don't hesitate. You won't be disappointed.

The weather today was typical for August in Yakushima: warm and humid, with occasional showers. The temperature hovered around 27°C (81°F) during the day, cooling down slightly in the evening. There was a brief spell of moderate rain in the afternoon, but it didn't dampen my spirits. The humidity was quite high, around 80%, which made the air feel heavy at times. Despite the rain and humidity, there were still plenty of hours of sunshine, allowing me to enjoy the outdoor attractions to the fullest.

Thinking of Isabella and Sofia back in Toronto, I know they would have loved the museum. Sofia especially would have been fascinated by the replica of the traditional house. I'll have to bring them back here someday. For now, though, I'll continue to explore and share my experiences with them – and with you, my dear readers. Good night from Yakushima!
