Day 9: Art and History Collide: Discovering Ayacucho's Soul
Immerse yourself in Ayacucho's art scene and ancient history, exploring stone sculptures and Wari culture with family.
Whispers of Stone and Warriors
Today in Ayacucho felt like stepping back in time, intertwined with the vibrant artistic spirit that defines this region. From the intricate stone carvings to the imposing Wari warrior monument, every corner told a story. It was a day of cultural immersion, sharing the rich heritage of my homeland with my family, especially Mateo, who was captivated by the artistry and history around us.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Maraycha Restaurant. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for a day of exploration. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the traditional Huamanga dishes were a perfect introduction to the local flavors. I savored every bite, reminiscing about similar breakfasts I enjoyed with my own family back in Huancavelica. Sophie and Mateo seemed to enjoy it too, which made the experience even more special.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to Taller De Esculturas En Piedra De Huamanga- Julio Gálvez. This was an experience I was particularly looking forward to. As a restoration technician with a passion for preserving history, I have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. The taller was everything I had hoped for and more. Meeting Julio Gálvez, a Gran Maestro of Peruvian crafts, was an honor. His workshop was filled with incredible sculptures made from Huamanga stone, each piece telling a story of Ayacucho's culture and history.

Julio was kind enough to share his process with us, explaining how he coaxes the forms from the stone, letting the material guide his hand. He spoke of the stone whispering its secrets, revealing the figures hidden within. It reminded me of my own work, how I try to listen to the buildings I restore, understanding their history and preserving their essence. I watched Mateo's eyes widen as Julio demonstrated his techniques, the rhythmic tapping of the chisel a mesmerizing sound. I could see a spark of creativity ignite in him, a connection to his Peruvian roots.
I was particularly moved by one sculpture depicting a traditional Ayacucho woman, her face etched with the wisdom and resilience of generations. It was a poignant reminder of the strength and beauty of the people of this region. I felt a surge of pride, knowing that Mateo was witnessing this firsthand, connecting with his heritage in such a tangible way. Sophie, ever the librarian, was fascinated by the historical context of the sculptures, asking Julio about the origins of the Huamanga stone and the significance of the different figures he created.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the taller, we headed to El guerrero Wari Ayacucho, an imposing monument that represents the Wari Empire, a significant pre-Inca civilization that flourished in this area. The monument stands tall, a testament to the power and influence of the Wari people. Mateo was instantly impressed, marveling at the size and strength of the warrior. I explained to him the importance of the Wari culture, how they were skilled administrators and builders, laying the foundation for later civilizations like the Incas. I told him stories of their vast empire, their intricate road systems, and their sophisticated agricultural techniques.

As we stood there, admiring the monument, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between the Wari and my own journey. Like them, I had left my homeland in search of new opportunities, carrying with me the traditions and values of my ancestors. And like them, I hoped to build a better future for my family, blending the old and the new, the Peruvian and the Canadian. The experience was a profound reminder of my roots and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations.
For lunch, we ventured to Cevicheria Restobar TECHITA. The ceviche was incredibly fresh, a burst of citrus and spice that awakened the senses. It was a welcome respite from the midday sun, a chance to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration. Mateo, who usually shies away from seafood, surprised us by devouring a plate of arroz con mariscos, declaring it the best rice he had ever tasted. Sophie enjoyed a refreshing pisco sour, commenting on the perfect balance of sweet and sour. The lively atmosphere of the restobar added to the experience, the sounds of laughter and conversation creating a sense of community.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in some shopping at Galeria 5 continentes. This turned out to be a treasure trove of unique Peruvian fashion. Sophie, with her keen eye for style, was in her element, browsing through the colorful textiles and handcrafted clothing. Mateo, surprisingly, was also engaged, fascinated by the intricate patterns and designs. I found myself drawn to a beautifully woven poncho, the vibrant colors and intricate details reminding me of the traditional textiles of Huancavelica. I purchased it as a souvenir, a reminder of this trip and a symbol of my connection to my homeland.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Wambar. Pollos a la leña for dinner. The aroma of wood-fired chicken filled the air, a tantalizing invitation to indulge. The restaurant was bustling with locals, a testament to its popularity. We ordered a whole chicken, along with sides of papas fritas and ensalada. The chicken was cooked to perfection, the skin crispy and flavorful, the meat tender and juicy. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, a perfect ending to a day of cultural exploration.

During dinner, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. We're planning to visit Pampa de Quinua and Intihuatana. I'm eager to see the historical battlefield and the ancient Inca site, to delve deeper into the history and culture of this region. Mateo is excited about the prospect of exploring the countryside, of seeing the vast landscapes and learning about the battles that shaped this nation. Sophie is looking forward to the tranquility of Intihuatana, to connecting with the spiritual energy of the ancient site.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I feel a deep sense of contentment. Today was a day of connection, of sharing my heritage with my family, of immersing ourselves in the art, history, and culture of Ayacucho. It was a day that strengthened our bonds and created memories that will last a lifetime. And as I look forward to tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region and to share its stories with the world.
