A Solo Adventure to Ghana's Wli Nature Reserve
Day 1: Ghana's Wli Nature Reserve: A Tanzanian Archivist's First Impressions
Embark on a solo journey to Ghana's Wli Nature Reserve, exploring vibrant markets, savoring local cuisine, and anticipating the majestic waterfalls.
First Day Discoveries in Wli
As I settle into the Wli Nature Reserve, Ghana, the air is thick with anticipation. After a long journey from London, via Accra, I'm eager to absorb the sights, sounds, and tastes of this new environment. My heart is full of excitement as this is my first time in West Africa.
The journey here was quite something. Landing in Accra, the vibrant energy of the city was immediately apparent. The bustling airport, the colourful clothing, and the lilting accents of the locals created a sensory feast. I managed to catch a connecting flight to Hohoe, which was thankfully uneventful. From Hohoe, a short taxi ride brought me to the Wli Nature Reserve. The transition from the urban sprawl to the tranquil reserve was seamless, as if stepping through a portal into another world. It reminded me a bit of the journey from Dar es Salaam to the Uluguru Mountains back home, although I must admit, the vegetation here is even denser.
My first order of business was to check in at the Wli Waterfalls main office. The staff were incredibly welcoming, providing me with maps and essential information about the reserve. They also emphasized the importance of hiring a local guide for the hikes, something I plan to do tomorrow when I visit the waterfalls themselves. I am here during the rainy season, so I plan to wear sturdy hiking shoes as the trails can be slippery and challenging.

Before venturing too far, I decided to treat myself to a proper Ghanaian breakfast at Bravos Food Restaurants. I opted for a hearty dish of waakye, a flavorful combination of rice and beans, accompanied by fried plantains and a spicy stew. It was a delightful introduction to the local cuisine, reminding me of the comforting flavors of home-cooked meals back in Tanzania. Aisha would have loved this place; she always appreciates a good, authentic meal. I made a mental note to try and recreate the waakye when I get back to London, perhaps with a little help from my Kenyan wife.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and the most memorable adventures often start with a leap of faith.
After breakfast, I explored the nearby OnyameAte Nature's Gallery, a charming shop filled with local crafts and artwork. As an archivist, I am always drawn to unique cultural artifacts, and this gallery was a treasure trove of handcrafted items. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Farah and Imani, my children, hoping they would appreciate a taste of Ghanaian artistry. I was particularly drawn to a hand-carved wooden mask, its intricate details telling a story of tradition and heritage. It reminded me of the Makonde carvings we have back in Tanzania, each piece a testament to the skill and creativity of the local artisans.

Lunch was at VOLTA GATE RESTAURANT, where I indulged in some more local delicacies. This time, I tried fufu with groundnut soup, a staple dish in Ghana. The fufu, made from pounded yam, had a unique texture that took some getting used to, but the rich and flavorful groundnut soup was simply divine. The restaurant itself was a bustling hub of activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor the authentic Ghanaian cuisine. It was fascinating to observe the interactions between people from different backgrounds, united by their shared love for good food.

In the late afternoon, I took a leisurely stroll around the town, soaking in the atmosphere and observing daily life. The streets were alive with activity, vendors selling their wares, children playing games, and locals chatting and laughing. The vibrant colours of the clothing, the rhythmic sounds of the music, and the tantalizing aromas of street food created an immersive sensory experience. It was a world away from the quiet streets of London, yet there was a familiar sense of community and warmth that resonated with me.
For dinner, I decided to try Christian Gardens Restaurant, another local gem recommended by the staff at the main office. The restaurant had a relaxed and welcoming ambiance, with a beautiful garden setting that provided a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. I ordered grilled tilapia with banku, a fermented corn and cassava dough, another Ghanaian staple. The tilapia was perfectly cooked, its delicate flavor enhanced by the smoky char of the grill. The banku, with its slightly sour taste, provided a unique and satisfying accompaniment.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my first impressions of Wli Nature Reserve. The natural beauty of the landscape, the warmth and hospitality of the people, and the richness of the culture had already captivated me. I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation for the days ahead, eager to explore the waterfalls, immerse myself in the local traditions, and discover the hidden gems of this remarkable destination. I must remember to buy mosquito repellent tomorrow, as I forgot to pack it, and the insects are quite active in the evening.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Wli Waterfalls and Wli Agumatsa Waterfalls. I intend to explore the trails and take in the stunning views. I will have breakfast at Maria's Restaurant, lunch at Hill Sanctuary Ghana, and dinner at In God We Trust. I might also visit the TREE BAR GHANA for a drink.
Before retiring for the night, I sat outside my tent, gazing up at the star-studded sky. The sounds of the forest filled the air, the chirping of crickets, the hooting of owls, and the rustling of leaves creating a symphony of nature. It was a moment of perfect peace and tranquility, a reminder of the simple joys of life and the beauty of the natural world. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this remarkable place, to connect with nature, and to learn from the local culture. It was a journey of discovery, not just of a new destination, but also of myself.
