A Fond Farewell to Myvatn

As our incredible family adventure in Iceland's Myvatn Region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the amazing experiences we've shared over the past week. Today, our final day, was filled with a mix of natural beauty, delicious food, and a touch of Icelandic nightlife. It's hard to believe our time here is already over, but the memories we've made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Gamli Bærinn. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Icelandic fare were the perfect way to start our last day in Myvatn. I opted for the lamb, while Greta enjoyed the tomato soup. Leila, of course, went straight for the waffles. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, we set off to explore The Fly Lands.

The drive to The Fly Lands was scenic, offering panoramic views of the Myvatn landscape. The Fly Lands, I discovered, is a geothermal area known for its unique biodiversity and striking volcanic terrain. We spent a good couple of hours wandering along the picturesque paths, observing the dramatic contrasts of the volcanic landscape against patches of vibrant greenery. Leila was fascinated by the bubbling mud pots and the strong smell of sulfur in the air. It was a stark reminder of the powerful geothermal activity that shapes this region.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its landscapes, but in the moments of connection it fosters with loved ones.

From The Fly Lands, we made our way to Selfoss, a magnificent waterfall located in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

Although often overshadowed by its more powerful neighbor, Dettifoss, Selfoss possesses a unique charm all its own. The waterfall isn't very tall, only about 10 meters, but it spans a width of approximately 100 meters. The glacial water from the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river cascades over the edge, creating a breathtaking spectacle. We hiked along the trail that connects Dettifoss and Selfoss, enjoying the stunning views of the canyon along the way. Leila was thrilled to get up close to the waterfall, feeling the mist on her face as we admired the natural wonder.

After a morning of exploring, our stomachs started to rumble, so we headed to Kaffi Borgir for lunch.

This charming cafe is located near the Dimmuborgir lava formations, and it's known for its delicious bread baked in a geyser. We sampled some smoked lamb and trout. Leila enjoyed a hearty bowl of soup. The cozy atmosphere and the beautiful views made for a perfect midday break.

As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to reflect on our journey. I couldn't help but think back to our life in Berlin, and how much I appreciate these opportunities to escape the city and immerse ourselves in nature. Greta, with her love for history and exploration, was particularly captivated by the geological wonders of the Myvatn Region. And Leila, with her boundless energy and curiosity, embraced every adventure with open arms. It's moments like these that remind me why we embarked on this journey in the first place: to create lasting memories as a family and to experience the beauty of our planet.

For our final dinner in Myvatn, we decided to try Bistro Sel & Pizza.

The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu offered a variety of options, from pizzas to traditional bistro dishes. I opted for the trout, while Greta decided to try one of their pizzas. Leila, predictably, chose the pizza as well! The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive.

With Leila safely tucked in, Greta and I decided to venture out for one last Icelandic experience. We drove to Húsavík, a charming fishing village about an hour away, to visit Jaja Ding Dong, a nightclub inspired by the movie *Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga*.

The bar was cozy and lively, with a fun atmosphere and a cocktail menu inspired by the film. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, listened to some music, and soaked in the unique ambiance. It was the perfect way to end our trip, a celebration of Icelandic culture and a nod to the quirky charm of this beautiful country.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had in the Myvatn Region. From exploring geothermal areas to hiking along waterfalls to experiencing Icelandic nightlife, we've created memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we'll begin our journey back to Reykjavik, filled with stories to tell and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of our planet. While our family adventure in Iceland's Myvatn Region is coming to an end, the memories and experiences we've gained here will undoubtedly stay with us forever. It's a reminder of the importance of family, the beauty of nature, and the joy of exploration. As we prepare to leave this magical place, I know that a part of me will always remain in Iceland, drawn back to its stunning landscapes and the warmth of its people. Takk fyrir, Myvatn, for an unforgettable adventure.

It’s time to pack our bags, double-check we have our sunscreen and travel adapter (items we nearly forgot!), and prepare for our flight back to Berlin. While I’m looking forward to returning to our cozy apartment and the familiar streets of our neighborhood, I know I’ll be carrying a piece of Iceland with me. The memories we’ve made here, the lessons we’ve learned, and the bonds we’ve strengthened as a family will undoubtedly shape our future adventures. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll return to this magical island and explore even more of its hidden gems. Until then, I’ll cherish the moments we’ve shared and continue to share our stories with the world. Aloha!

And now, as the midnight sun casts its gentle glow over the Myvatn Region, I bid you all a fond farewell from this enchanting corner of the world. May your own travels be filled with wonder, discovery, and the joy of shared experiences. Until next time, keep exploring, keep dreaming, and keep embracing the spirit of adventure. E kala mai, Iceland – until we meet again!
