Kyoto: A Golden Start

Aloha from Kyoto! Our family adventure has officially begun, and what a day it has been! Trading the familiar streets of Berlin for the ancient wonders of Kyoto was a journey in itself, but stepping off that train and into this city felt like entering another world. The air is different here, carrying a sense of history and tranquility that’s both calming and invigorating. It's a beautiful Tuesday, April 15th, and the cherry blossoms are putting on a spectacular show.

Our day started with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I've been trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet, inspired by Berlin's sustainable food scene, and this place was a fantastic find. Leila was thrilled with her fluffy pancakes, while Greta and I opted for savory options. It’s always a win when we find a place that caters to everyone's tastes. I am always on the lookout for places that support sustainable practices, and AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO seemed to align with those values. The pancakes are 'heavenly' as some say, and are a must-try!

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. I had seen countless photos of this iconic temple, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer brilliance of its golden facade shimmering against the clear blue sky. It felt like a scene from a movie, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The meticulously manicured gardens surrounding the pavilion added to the serene atmosphere, creating a space that felt both sacred and inviting. Even Leila, who usually has the attention span of a hummingbird, was captivated by the golden reflection in the pond. We spent a good hour wandering around, soaking in the beauty and snapping photos to capture the moment. The crowds were definitely there, but it didn't detract too much from the experience. The Golden Pavilion is split into two parts, the pond and the pavilion in the front, and a trail through the gardens in the back. I agree that there are better gardens in Kyoto, but the Golden Pavilion is a must-see!

Sometimes, the most extraordinary adventures begin with a single step into the unknown.

Next on our list was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. After the splendor of Kinkaku-ji, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the palace offered a different kind of beauty – one of understated elegance and historical significance. The vast grounds and traditional architecture transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of Japan's emperors and their court. We took a guided tour, which provided fascinating insights into the palace's history and the rituals that once took place within its walls. Leila was particularly intrigued by the stories of the emperors and empresses who had lived there, and Greta, with her curator's eye, appreciated the intricate details of the palace's design. I found myself reflecting on the parallels between the imperial history of Japan and the royal history of Europe, a connection that made me feel more grounded in this unfamiliar place. The plum trees and cherry blossoms are in bloom in March and April, which attracts joggers, cyclists, walkers and picnickers.

Our historical immersion continued with a visit to Nijō Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage site. This castle, with its impressive gates, stunning gardens, and the famous Nightingale Floors that chirp underfoot, offered a fascinating contrast to the Imperial Palace. The audio guide helped us navigate the vast complex and understand its significance in Japanese history. I found myself drawn to the intricate details of the Ninomaru Palace, imagining the power struggles and political intrigues that had played out within its walls. Leila, of course, was most fascinated by the Nightingale Floors, giggling every time they chirped beneath our feet. We also explored the gardens, which were beautifully landscaped and provided a tranquil escape from the bustling city outside. It took us at least 3 hours to see the entire castle and gardens. It is vast, so you don't want to rush through it!

By late afternoon, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta for lunch. After a morning filled with temples and palaces, we were ready for something hearty and satisfying. This restaurant is known for its tonkatsu, and it did not disappoint. The pork cutlets were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the set meal came with all-you-can-eat rice, miso soup, and cabbage salad. I especially enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds for the tonkatsu sauce, a unique and interactive touch. Leila devoured her meal, while Greta and I savored the flavors and reflected on our day's adventures. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere.

Before heading back to our Ryokan, Kyoto Watazen Ryokan, we stopped by the Kyoto Crafts Store. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our trip, and this store had a wonderful selection of traditional crafts and local products. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted fan for Greta and a cute little kimono doll for Leila. I also couldn't resist picking up a few small items for myself, including a set of handcrafted chopsticks and a small ceramic sake cup. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find a store that showcased the talent and creativity of Kyoto's craftspeople.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its modern take on traditional kaiseki cuisine. This was definitely the culinary highlight of our day. The restaurant's elegant and intimate setting created a sense of anticipation, and the multi-course meal was a feast for the senses. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were complex and nuanced, showcasing the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. I especially enjoyed the smoked cherry trout, a Kikunoi classic. Greta, with her refined palate, appreciated the chef's innovative use of non-Japanese ingredients and European cooking techniques. Leila, surprisingly, was well-behaved throughout the meal, even trying some of the more adventurous dishes. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, explaining each course with grace and enthusiasm. The English skills of the staff were good throughout, making it a great destination for western tourists. To end the night we cleansed our palates with a chilled basil seed soup with almond jelly topped by two fragrant strawberries.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from our cozy ryokan, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible day. Kyoto has exceeded all of my expectations, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We'll be venturing into the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, visiting the serene Tenryu-ji Temple, and exploring the picturesque Okochi Sanso Garden. It's going to be another day filled with beauty, history, and cultural immersion. I'm also excited to try some local cuisine at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura for breakfast, Arash's Kitchen for lunch and Teppan Tavern Tenamonya for dinner. I am also looking forward to doing some shopping at Kyoto Avanti.

Oyasumi nasai from Kyoto! Until tomorrow, keep exploring and keep discovering. And remember, as they say here, Ichi-go ichi-e – treasure every encounter, for it will never recur.
