Solo Exploration of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park
Day 9: A Day of Serene Escapes and Coastal Delights in Ria Formosa
Explore Vilamoura's Parque Ambiental, Faro's Jardim da Alameda João de Deus, and indulge in Ria Formosa's culinary gems. A perfect day!
Finding Peace in Parks and Coastal Flavors
Today was a beautiful blend of tranquil nature walks and delightful culinary experiences here in Ria Formosa. I set out to explore a couple of the local parks and treat myself to some delicious Portuguese cuisine. It's amazing how much a change of scenery and some fresh air can rejuvenate the spirit, especially when paired with the flavors of the Algarve.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Ria Formosa. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. I love starting my day with a good breakfast; it reminds me of the simple joys in life and sets a positive tone for whatever lies ahead.
Exploring Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura
After breakfast, I headed to Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura. This park is a true oasis, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling tourist areas. As I wandered along the well-maintained paths, I was immediately struck by the variety of ecosystems within the park. Lush gardens, serene water bodies, and diverse plant species created a calming atmosphere.

I spent a couple of hours simply strolling, observing the local flora and fauna. The park is known for its birdlife, and I managed to spot several species, including kingfishers and herons. I wasn't lucky enough to see flamingos, but it was still a treat to see so many different birds in their natural habitat. The air was fresh, and the only sounds were the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional bird call. It was exactly the kind of peaceful experience I was hoping for. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Leila here someday; they would absolutely love it.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
A Stroll Through Jardim da Alameda João de Deus
Next on my list was Jardim da Alameda João de Deus in Faro. This garden, located on the east side of the city near Ria Formosa, offered a different but equally enjoyable experience. As Faro's largest garden, it boasts a small wood with diverse fauna and flora. The Alameda gardens provided a welcome respite from the urban environment.

What struck me most was the Neo-Arab building at the top of the garden, formerly a municipal slaughterhouse, now serving as an interesting architectural focal point. I enjoyed walking around the garden, taking in the scenery and observing the locals enjoying their Saturday afternoon. There was a palpable sense of community, with families picnicking, children playing, and couples strolling hand in hand. It reminded me of the parks back in Berlin, where people gather to relax and socialize.
Lunch at Gigi's Beach Restaurant Quinta do Lago
For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Gigi's Beach Restaurant Quinta do Lago. The walk to the restaurant was an adventure in itself, as it's only accessible via wooden walkways through the Ria Formosa wetlands. The restaurant is a small wooden beach house on high stilts, giving it a unique and charming vibe.

The location is truly special, offering stunning views of the Ria Formosa. It felt like being on an island, surrounded by nature. The only slight drawback was the noise from the planes taking off from the nearby airport. However, the beautiful scenery more than made up for it. I opted for grilled prawns with rice, a classic Portuguese dish. The prawns were fresh and flavorful, and the rice was perfectly cooked. It was a bit pricey, but the location and view made it worth it.
Evening Delights at Bel'mare Gastrobar - Praia de Faro
As evening approached, I made my way to Bel'mare Gastrobar on Praia de Faro for dinner. Getting there was an experience in itself, driving over the long wooden bridge to reach the peninsula. The restaurant has a fantastic location, offering panoramic views of Faro's cityscape, the airport, and the beach.

I secured a spot on the rooftop terrace and enjoyed the breathtaking sunset. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, with hip music playing in the background. I decided to try some tapas, including the prawns and tuna, which were delicious. The service was prompt and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and relaxation. The view was magnificent, the food was great, and the service was very attentive.
Cocktails at Zona Cocktail Lounge Bar
To cap off the evening, I visited Zona Cocktail Lounge Bar in Olhão. This bar has a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind after a busy day. I sampled a couple of their signature cocktails, including a gin-based drink and a piña colada. The cocktails were expertly crafted, and the staff was friendly and attentive.

The lounge has a great vibe, with comfortable seating and a relaxed ambiance. It's the kind of place where you can easily spend a few hours chatting with friends or simply enjoying the music. I struck up a conversation with a local couple, and we shared stories about our travels and experiences. It was a reminder of how travel can bring people together and create meaningful connections.
As I sipped my cocktail, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the tranquil parks to the delicious food and drinks, it had been a perfect day of exploration and relaxation. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Ria Formosa. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, reminding me of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the present, and connecting with the world around me. I am really looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to explore the Cerro da Vila - Roman Village and Cidade Velha [Tomorrow's itinerary].
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took one last look at the stars, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day and excited for what tomorrow would bring. Good night from Ria Formosa!
