Beneath the Surface: Exploring Chapada's Hidden Gems
Today was all about venturing into the heart of Chapada Diamantina National Park, trading the expansive landscapes for the intimate embrace of its caves and crystalline waters. It's a journey that reminds me why I traded my Berlin apartment for a life on the road – the constant discovery of new worlds, each one more mesmerizing than the last.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. The aroma of fresh coffee and the promise of another day in paradise was the perfect fuel for the adventures ahead. After a quick bite, I set off to Lapa Doce Cave, a place I’d been eagerly anticipating since planning this trip. As someone who finds solace and wonder in the quiet corners of the world, I was stoked to explore this subterranean marvel.

Lapa Doce Cave: A Journey into the Earth
The entrance to Lapa Doce is dramatic, a massive sinkhole leading down into the earth. Stepping inside felt like entering another world. The cave is vast, with towering stalactites and stalagmites creating an otherworldly landscape. Our guide, a local with an obvious passion for the cave's geology and history, led us through the caverns, pointing out unique formations and sharing stories of the cave’s past. The silence within Lapa Doce was profound, broken only by the occasional drip of water and the hushed voices of our group. It was a meditative experience, a chance to disconnect from the outside world and connect with the deep history of the earth.
It is generally considered the most beautiful cave system in Chapada Diamantina, and is well worth seeing.
Navigating through Lapa Doce Cave involved a moderate level of physical activity, with some uneven terrain and narrow passages. However, the experience was well worth the effort. The cave's unique geological formations, combined with the sense of adventure and discovery, made it a highlight of my trip so far. I couldn’t help but think about my friends back in Berlin, probably just starting their workday, while I was wandering through an ancient cave in Brazil. I definitely made the right choice.
After emerging from Lapa Doce, I made a quick stop at Artesanatos da Elismoni. I picked up a few souvenirs – a small, hand-carved wooden animal and a colorful woven bracelet – reminders of my time in Chapada Diamantina. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and it felt good to contribute to the community in a small way.

Poço Azul: Swimming in a Dream
Next on the agenda was Poço Azul, and the anticipation was building. I had seen photos of this mesmerizing blue pool, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. The drive to Poço Azul was scenic, winding through the rugged landscape of Chapada Diamantina. Upon arrival, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air. After a mandatory shower to protect the delicate ecosystem, I descended into the cave. The sight that greeted me was breathtaking.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Poço Azul, a natural wonder in Bahia, where crystal-clear waters meet stunning landscapes, perfect for relaxation and exploration.
Poço Azul is an underground lake with water so clear and blue it seems unreal. The sunlight filters through a crack in the cave ceiling, creating an ethereal glow that illuminates the water. I slipped into the cool water, and it felt like entering another dimension. Swimming in Poço Azul was a surreal experience, as if I were floating in space. The water was so clear that I could see the cave floor far below, adding to the feeling of weightlessness.
The time allowed for swimming is limited to ensure the preservation of the cave, but those 20 minutes were pure magic. I floated on my back, gazing up at the opening in the cave ceiling, feeling an incredible sense of peace and gratitude. It was one of those moments that makes all the challenges of solo travel worthwhile.
Back to Sabor da Serra
After an unforgettable swim, I had lunch. I was famished after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal, savoring the flavors of Bahia. The restaurant was bustling with activity, fellow travelers sharing stories and laughter. It's these shared experiences that make traveling so rewarding. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes when I get back to Berlin, a little piece of Brazil in my own kitchen.
Before heading back to my lodging, I made a second stop at Artesanatos da Elismoni. I wanted to find a special gift for my mom, who always appreciates handmade crafts. I finally settled on a beautiful ceramic bowl, painted with vibrant colors and intricate designs. I knew she would love it.
Dinner tonight was again at Restaurante Sabor da Serra, drawn back by its cozy atmosphere and excellent food. I opted for a traditional Bahian dish, moqueca, a flavorful seafood stew cooked in coconut milk. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
As I sit here writing this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. The plan is to visit Cachoeira da Primavera and Cachoeira Mixila, two waterfalls that promise more stunning natural beauty. And maybe, just maybe, I'll treat myself to a burger at Ovelha'S - Hambúrguer Esbagaçador in the evening. After a day of hiking, I'll definitely deserve it.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the chance to explore hidden worlds, connect with nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Chapada Diamantina continues to surprise and inspire me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
This trip is also a great opportunity to reflect on my life choices. Leaving the corporate world to pursue my passion for travel and writing wasn't easy, but days like today confirm that I made the right decision. The freedom to explore, the chance to learn and grow, and the opportunity to share my experiences with others – it's all worth it. And who knows, maybe one day I'll even convince my salsa dancing friends from Berlin to join me on one of these adventures. Until then, I'll keep exploring, keep writing, and keep sharing my stories with the world.
Embark on a 15-day solo journey through Brazil's Chapada Diamantina National Park, exploring breathtaking waterfalls and vast plateaus.
