Solo Adventure in Chapada Diamantina: Exploring Brazil's Natural Wonders
Day 2: Sunset Reflections: A Day of Legends and Dips in Chapada Diamantina
Chasing sunsets at Morro do Pai Inácio and cooling off in Poço do Diabo, a day of legends and natural beauty in Chapada Diamantina.
Legends at Sunset and Refreshing Dips
Today was a day of dramatic landscapes and refreshing waters, a perfect blend of Chapada Diamantina's natural beauty and intriguing local legends. I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. The plan was to witness the sunset from Morro do Pai Inácio and then cool off in the waters of Poço do Diabo.
The drive to Morro do Pai Inácio was scenic, with the landscape transforming as I got closer. The road wound through the hills, offering glimpses of the vast valleys and plateaus that define this region. It reminded me of road trips back in Puerto Rico, where every turn reveals a new breathtaking vista. The anticipation of seeing the sunset from such a legendary spot made the journey even more exciting.
Upon arriving at Morro do Pai Inácio, I was immediately struck by its imposing presence. Rising sharply from the surrounding landscape, it commands attention and respect. The hike to the top was relatively short, about 20-25 minutes, but the views along the way were incredible. I could see the Vale do Capão and the distinctive Morro do Camelo and Morrão in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the surrounding vegetation.
As I reached the summit, I found a spot to settle in and wait for the sunset. More and more people started arriving, a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to witness the spectacle. There was a palpable sense of excitement in the air as the sun began its descent. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors – oranges, reds, and purples blending seamlessly together. It was truly a magical experience, one that I tried to capture with my camera, but some moments are just too grand to be contained in a photograph.
The sunset at Morro do Pai Inácio wasn't just a visual treat; it was a moment to connect with the history and legends of this enchanting place.
The legend of Pai Inácio, the runaway slave who jumped from the mountain with an umbrella, adds a layer of mystique to this already captivating location. Standing there, watching the sunset, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past, to the stories and struggles of those who came before me. It’s amazing how a place can hold so much history and emotion.
After the sunset, I made my way to Poço do Diabo, eager to experience its refreshing waters. The drive was about half an hour from Morro do Pai Inácio. The contrast between the warm hues of the sunset and the cool, dark waters of the Poço do Diabo was something I was greatly anticipating.
The legend behind the name “Poço do Diabo” (Devil’s Pool) is quite dark. It is said that a slave owner discovered his slaves were smuggling diamonds and had them killed and thrown into the pool. The water turned red with their blood, hence the name. Despite the grim story, the pool is known for its revitalizing and scenic views.
The trail to Poço do Diabo was a short hike from the restaurant, about 1.5km. The path led me through lush vegetation, the air thick with humidity. As I approached the pool, I could hear the sound of the waterfall cascading into the water. The sight was stunning – a 20-meter waterfall plunging into a pool of dark, reddish water, surrounded by towering canyon walls.
I wasted no time diving in. The water was surprisingly cold, a welcome contrast to the warm evening air. Swimming under the waterfall was an exhilarating experience, the force of the water massaging my shoulders and back. The reddish hue of the water added an otherworldly quality to the experience. I spent a good hour swimming and exploring the area, feeling completely refreshed and rejuvenated.
After my swim, I decided to grab a bite at the nearby restaurant. While it wasn't Restaurante Sabor da Serra, it was a convenient spot to refuel after a long day of exploring. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal, savoring the flavors of the local cuisine.
As the day wound down, I made a stop at Catingueiro Brew Pub in Lençóis. I was curious to check out the local craft beer scene. The pub had a cozy atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the evening. I ordered a local IPA and chatted with some of the patrons, sharing stories of our adventures in Chapada Diamantina. It was a great way to end the day, connecting with people and experiencing the local culture.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had packed into a single day. From the breathtaking sunset at Morro do Pai Inácio to the invigorating waters of Poço do Diabo and the friendly atmosphere of Catingueiro Brew Pub, it was a day filled with memorable experiences. It reminded me why I love traveling – the opportunity to discover new places, connect with different cultures, and create lasting memories.
Tomorrow, I am planning to hike to Cachoeira da Fumaça, one of the highest waterfalls in Brazil. I've heard it's a challenging hike, but the reward is well worth the effort. I'm also hoping to stop by Empório Chapada Diamantina to pick up some local souvenirs. It’s going to be another early start, but I'm excited to see what Chapada Diamantina has in store for me.
As I head back to my accommodation, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Chapada Diamantina is truly a special place, a hidden gem in the heart of Brazil. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Embark on a 15-day solo journey through Brazil's Chapada Diamantina National Park, exploring breathtaking waterfalls and vast plateaus.
