Seville's Soulful Strides

Today was a day of wandering through Seville's historical heart and experiencing its vibrant soul. I explored architectural marvels, strolled through peaceful gardens, and savored the city's culinary delights. It was a day that deepened my appreciation for Seville's unique blend of history and culture.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Linterna Ciega. The Gastroranking reviews mentioned the exceptional decor, but the food was even better than expected. This was a great way to get fueled up for the day.

My first stop was the Iglesia de San Luis de los Franceses, a church that is a true hidden gem. The church was designed by Leonardo de Figueroa and built between 1699 and 1730. Its history is as fascinating as its architecture. Once a Jesuit novitiate, it has served various purposes over the centuries, including a seminary, a Franciscan convent, and even a hospital. Today, it stands as a stunning example of Baroque art, and is owned by the Diputación de Sevilla.

Stepping inside, I was immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of ornate splendor. The church is a masterpiece of Baroque art, with every surface adorned with intricate details. The dome, supported by sixteen Solomonic columns, is a breathtaking sight. Light streams in, illuminating the gilded surfaces and creating a sense of ethereal beauty. It's easy to see why it's considered one of the most important Baroque spaces in Spain.

The paintings by Lucas Valdés and Domingo Martínez are particularly striking. The cupola features paintings of items from the Temple of Solomon, while the vault of the choir presents an allegory of Saint Ignacio and divine wisdom. Every corner of the church tells a story, a testament to the artistic skill and religious devotion of the time.

After immersing myself in the Baroque splendor of the Iglesia de San Luis de los Franceses, I made my way to the Puente de Triana, also known as the Puente de Isabel II. This iconic bridge connects the city center with the vibrant Triana neighborhood, and its history is as rich as the waters it spans.

Before the Puente de Triana, a makeshift bridge made of boats was the only way to cross the Guadalquivir River. This unstable structure stood for centuries until the 19th century when the city decided to build a more permanent bridge. Inspired by the Puente du Carrousel in Paris, the Puente de Triana was completed in 1852, during the reign of Queen Isabel II, hence its official name. Today, it is the oldest iron bridge in Spain and a symbol of Seville.

Walking across the Puente de Triana, I took in the panoramic views of the city. The Guadalquivir River flowed gently beneath me, reflecting the sunlight and the colorful buildings that lined its banks. On one side, I could see the historic center of Seville, with the Giralda towering above the skyline. On the other side, the Triana neighborhood beckoned with its lively atmosphere and distinct character.

Triana has always been a hub of creativity and culture. Historically, it was home to sailors, potters, and flamenco artists, and that spirit still thrives today. As I strolled through its streets, I could feel the energy and passion that permeates every corner. The colorful buildings, adorned with flowers and ceramic tiles, exuded a sense of warmth and welcome.

For lunch, I stopped at Bodega Palo Santo, enticed by its reputation for reinventing traditional cuisine with a modern twist. The Bodega Palo Santo offered dishes with a base of updated Mediterranean cuisine, while not losing the essence of traditional recipes.

After a satisfying lunch, I sought a tranquil escape at the Jardines de Cristina. These gardens, inaugurated in 1830, are named in honor of María Cristina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, the wife of King Ferdinand VII. Designed by architect Melchor Cano and botanist Claudio Boutelou, the gardens were once part of the Alcázar gardens before being transferred to the city.

As I entered the Jardines de Cristina, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace and serenity that permeated the air. The gardens are a carefully landscaped oasis, with lush greenery, winding paths, and tranquil fountains. It was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature.

The gardens were filled with a variety of trees and flowering plants, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors and scents. Benches were strategically placed along the paths, inviting visitors to sit and soak in the beauty of their surroundings. I found a quiet spot near a fountain and spent some time reading, enjoying the gentle sounds of the water and the warmth of the afternoon sun.

In the evening, I headed to Las Teresas for dinner. This historic tapas bar, founded in 1870, is a Seville institution. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported back in time. The walls were adorned with bullfighting memorabilia and vintage photographs, and the air was thick with the aroma of jamón and sherry. The bar was packed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the traditional tapas and soak in the atmosphere.

I ordered a selection of tapas, including espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas), morrillo (grilled tuna collar), and judiones (butter beans with jamón). Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. I washed it all down with a glass of local wine, savoring the moment and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place.

Before calling it a night, I made a final stop at Bar Casa Morales, one of the oldest and most authentic bars in Seville. Established in 1850, this bar is a true step back in time. The interior is rustic and charming, with high ceilings, wooden barrels, and walls adorned with vintage posters and memorabilia. It felt like stepping into a living museum, a place where history and tradition are cherished.

I ordered a glass of sherry and a tapa of queso viejo (aged cheese), savoring the flavors and soaking in the atmosphere. The bar was filled with locals, chatting and laughing, and I felt a sense of camaraderie and belonging. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Seville, a reminder of the city's rich culture and warm hospitality.

As I walked back to Hotel Rey Alfonso X, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the Baroque splendor of the Iglesia de San Luis de los Franceses to the vibrant energy of the Triana neighborhood, Seville had captivated me with its beauty and charm. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place, and I looked forward to discovering even more of its hidden treasures in the days to come.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Parque Arqueológico de Carmona and Casa de Pilatos. I am excited to see what new adventures await me.

Today, however, there was an event that I missed: Bryan Adams played at Fibes! I am a big fan, but there is only so much one can do in a day!

Tomorrow is my last day here. I will have to make the most of it!

Seville is more than just a city; it's an experience, a journey through time and culture that leaves an indelible mark on the soul.
