Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Iceland's Highlands
Day 7: Farewell, Highlands: Reflecting on Iceland's Majestic Beauty
Reflecting on a week of serene landscapes, camping under the stars, and sustainable exploration in Iceland's breathtaking Highlands.
Saying Goodbye to the Highlands
As our final day in the Highlands draws to a close, I find myself overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and awe. This week-long journey into the heart of Iceland's untamed wilderness has been nothing short of transformative. From the moment we set foot on this volcanic land, Hans and I were captivated by the serene landscapes and the sheer, raw beauty that surrounded us. It’s hard to believe our camping adventure is coming to an end; it feels like just yesterday we were pitching our tent for the first time, eager to explore the unknown.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Sjávarkjallarinn in Reykjavik. Though it felt a bit strange to be having breakfast in a seafood restaurant, the meal was delicious and set us up perfectly for the day ahead. I savored every bite, knowing it would be one of our last proper meals before heading back to Berlin and our familiar routine. The restaurant itself had a unique atmosphere, and I made a mental note to try their seafood dishes if we ever find ourselves in Reykjavik again.
With our appetites sated, we set off towards Vatnajökull National Park, eager to immerse ourselves in its glacial wonders. The drive itself was an experience, with the landscape transforming into a mesmerizing blend of ice and fire. As we approached the park, the sheer magnitude of Vatnajökull became apparent – a colossal ice cap dominating the horizon. It's hard to fathom that this is Europe's largest glacier, a frozen giant holding within it the secrets of centuries.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.
We spent hours exploring Vatnajökull, marveling at the ice caves and the stunning glacial formations. The park is vast, and every corner seemed to reveal a new spectacle. I was particularly fascinated by the contrasting elements of the landscape – the stark white of the ice against the dark, rugged mountains. It’s a place where you can truly appreciate the power and beauty of nature.
Next on our itinerary was Fjaðrárgljúfur, a canyon that has captured my imagination ever since I first saw photographs of it. The drive to the canyon was smooth, and as we approached, the landscape opened up to reveal the winding gorge carved by the Fjaðrá River. The canyon is relatively easy to access, which made it all the more appealing after our days of traversing more challenging terrain. We parked the car and took the short walk to the canyon's edge, and what greeted us was simply breathtaking.

The emerald-green moss clinging to the steep cliffs, the winding river snaking its way through the bottom of the gorge – it was like stepping into a painting. Hans and I spent a considerable amount of time simply taking in the view, trying to capture the essence of this natural wonder with our cameras. I also took a moment to reflect on the canyon's history, imagining the forces of nature that carved this masterpiece over thousands of years.
For lunch, we stopped at The Highland Center Hrauneyjar. It was a welcome respite from the rugged outdoors, and the food was hearty and satisfying. I opted for a traditional Icelandic dish, eager to savor the local flavors one last time. The Highland Center itself is quite charming, and I can see why it’s a popular stop for travelers exploring the region. It’s a place where you can rest, refuel, and gather information about the surrounding area.

Before heading back to Reykjavik, we made a detour to The Handknitting Association of Iceland. I had been wanting to purchase an authentic Icelandic sweater, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to support local artisans. The shop was filled with beautiful woolen goods, each piece telling a story of Icelandic craftsmanship. I spent a good hour browsing through the selection, admiring the intricate patterns and the quality of the wool.

I finally settled on a cozy lopapeysa, a traditional Icelandic sweater with a distinctive circular yoke design. It felt like the perfect memento of our trip, something to remind me of the Highlands long after we’ve returned home. Plus, knowing that I was supporting local knitters made the purchase even more meaningful. Hans also found a warm hat to take back home, a practical souvenir to remind him of our Icelandic adventure.
As the day wound down, we found ourselves at Drangar Restaurant for dinner. Located in Vik, the restaurant offered a modern twist on Icelandic cuisine, and we were eager to try it out. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the floor-to-ceiling windows provided stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. I decided to try the Arctic char, while Hans opted for the lamb tenderloin. Both dishes were expertly prepared and bursting with flavor.

Sometimes, the best souvenirs are the memories we create along the way.
As we savored our meal, we reminisced about the highlights of our trip – the breathtaking views from our campsite, the challenging hikes we conquered, and the unique experiences we shared. It was a week filled with adventure, discovery, and a deep connection with nature. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore this part of the world, and I know that the memories we’ve made here will stay with us for a lifetime.
Looking ahead, our journey comes to an end. We will be flying back to Berlin, ready to immerse ourselves once again in our urban lives. While I am excited to return to my garden and Hans to his coding, a part of me will always remain in the Highlands, amidst the serene landscapes and the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland. This trip has not only been a visual feast but also a profound reminder of the importance of sustainable travel and our connection to the natural world. As we pack our bags and bid farewell to this majestic land, I know that we will carry the spirit of the Highlands with us, inspiring our future adventures and shaping our commitment to preserving the planet.
Until next time, Iceland. Thank you for the memories.
