Icelandic Adventure: Exploring Reykjavik with Family
Day 8: Farewell, Reykjavik: A Whirlwind of Flights and Melodies
Experience a final day in Reykjavik with breathtaking views, stunning architecture, and unforgettable flavors before heading home.
Saying Goodbye to the Land of Fire and Ice
As our Icelandic adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared over the past eight days. Today was a day of lasts – the last Icelandic breakfast, the last exploration of Reykjavik's gems, and the bittersweet farewell to this captivating city. While packing my bags, a sense of gratitude washed over me, knowing that Iceland has gifted us with memories that will last a lifetime.
We started our day at Duck & Rose, a charming spot known for its French and Italian-inspired cuisine. I opted for the pancakes, while Hans enjoyed a hearty breakfast pizza Margherita. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our final day of exploration.

Our first stop was FlyOver Iceland, an experience I had been eagerly anticipating. This wasn't just a ride; it was a breathtaking journey across Iceland’s most iconic landscapes. Strapped into our seats, we were lifted into the air, dangling our feet before a massive spherical screen. The visuals were stunning, making us feel like we were soaring over glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanoes. The special effects, like wind, mist, and scents, added to the immersion, creating an unforgettable sensation of flight.

It felt as though we were truly gliding over the country, getting the best bird's-eye view imaginable, a perfect encapsulation of Iceland's raw beauty.
Hans, who usually isn't one for touristy attractions, was completely captivated. He admitted that it gave him a new appreciation for the diverse landscapes we had explored throughout the week. I even caught him tearing up a bit – he was so moved by the sheer beauty of Iceland from above! It was a wonderful way to revisit the places we had been and see them from an entirely new perspective.
After our flight, we headed to Harpa Concert Hall, a stunning architectural masterpiece. The building's glass facade, designed by Olafur Eliasson, was inspired by Iceland's basalt landscape. As we approached, the sunlight danced across the geometric panels, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadows. We spent some time wandering through the halls, admiring the modern design and the breathtaking views of the harbor.

I was particularly fascinated by the story of Harpa's construction. It was a project that faced numerous challenges, especially during the 2008 financial crisis. But the Icelandic people persevered, determined to create a cultural landmark that would inspire generations to come. Standing there, surrounded by the hall's elegant design, I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for their resilience and creativity.
For lunch, we ventured to Hosiló, a cozy restaurant known for its simple yet delicious meals. The menu changes weekly, offering a delightful surprise with dishes from various culinary traditions. We shared a few plates, including a flavorful pasta dish and a grilled vegetable medley. It was a perfect way to savor the local flavors one last time.

As we savored our meal, we chatted about our favorite moments from the trip. Hans loved the Golden Circle tour, especially the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area. I was particularly fond of our Northern Lights hunt, even though we didn't manage to catch them. The thrill of the chase and the stunning winter landscapes made it an unforgettable experience.
In the evening, we decided to try Punk Restaurant for dinner. However, upon arriving, we discovered it had closed down in June 2024 and has been replaced with a french restaurant. Instead, we opted for The Drunk Rabbit Irish Pub for a hearty meal and a pint of Guinness. The cozy atmosphere and live music were the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Hans particularly enjoyed the fish and chips, while I savored a comforting bowl of Irish stew.

Before heading back to Guesthouse Sunna, we decided to make one last stop at The Drunk Rabbit Irish Pub. The pub was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the lively atmosphere and traditional music. We ordered a couple of Irish coffees and toasted to our Icelandic adventure. As we sat there, listening to the music and soaking in the ambiance, I felt a pang of sadness knowing that our trip was coming to an end.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, the city was alive with activity. It was Sprengidagur, or “Bursting Day” (Shrove Tuesday), which Icelanders celebrate by eating as much as they can of boiled, corned lamb and split pea soup. The aroma of salted meat and peas filled the air, a reminder of the unique cultural traditions we had experienced during our stay. I made a mental note to try making the dish at home, a small way to keep the spirit of Iceland alive in our Berlin kitchen.
Back at Guesthouse Sunna, we packed our bags,整理 memories and souvenirs. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Iceland had exceeded all of our expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality.
Tomorrow, we head to the airport for our flight back to Berlin. While I'm excited to return home, I know that a piece of my heart will forever remain in Iceland. This trip has reminded me of the importance of exploring new places, embracing different cultures, and creating lasting memories with loved ones. And who knows, maybe someday we'll return to Iceland to chase those elusive Northern Lights once again.
As I close this chapter of our Icelandic adventure, I can't help but feel excited about the journeys that lie ahead. The world is vast and full of wonders waiting to be discovered. And with Hans by my side, I know that every adventure will be an opportunity to learn, grow, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you, Iceland, for the unforgettable experiences. Until next time!
Tomorrow marks the end of our journey as we catch our flight back to Berlin. I'm already anticipating sharing our stories and photos with friends and family, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own Icelandic adventure. Stay tuned for a final reflection on our trip and some practical tips for planning your own visit to this magical land.
