Icelandic Adventure: Exploring Reykjavik with Family
Day 5: Geothermal Bliss and Continental Divides: A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Discover Iceland's geothermal spas and continental divides. An enchanting journey of relaxation and geological marvels awaits you!
Chasing Waterfalls and Continental Lines
Today was a day of contrasts, from the soothing warmth of geothermal waters to the stark reality of continental divides. Hans and I embarked on a journey that reminded us of the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland, and how it continues to shape our understanding of the world. It was a day filled with relaxation, exploration, and a deeper appreciation for the forces that mold our planet.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at KRÖST. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for the grilled cod, while Hans enjoyed the lamb shanks. The food was delicious, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for the Blue Lagoon. The drive itself was scenic, with snow-dusted landscapes stretching out before us. As we approached the lagoon, the otherworldly sight of steam rising against the backdrop of black lava fields was simply mesmerizing. I'd read that March is a great time to visit to avoid the summer crowds, and I think we timed it just right. There were other people, of course, but it wasn't overwhelmingly busy.
Stepping into the Blue Lagoon was like entering another world. The mineral-rich waters were a balmy 39°C, a welcome contrast to the crisp Icelandic air. We lathered ourselves in silica mud, letting it work its magic on our skin. Floating in the milky blue water, surrounded by the stark beauty of the landscape, was an experience I won't soon forget. It felt like a true escape, a chance to disconnect from the world and simply be present in the moment. It was especially welcome after the long days of travel and sightseeing.

The earth has music for those who listen.
After a few hours of blissful relaxation, we reluctantly emerged from the lagoon, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Our next stop was the Bridge Between Continents, a symbolic structure spanning the divide between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It was a humbling experience to stand on this bridge, knowing that beneath our feet, the earth was slowly but surely shifting and changing.
The bridge itself is quite small, but the surrounding landscape is what truly captivated us. The rugged lava fields, stretching out towards the horizon, were a testament to the powerful forces at play. We took a walk along the fissure, marveling at the raw beauty and geological significance of the area. It was a stark reminder of the dynamic nature of our planet and the constant processes of creation and destruction that shape our world.

Before heading back to Reykjavik, we made a quick stop at the Saga Store. I was hoping to find a cozy Icelandic wool sweater as a souvenir. The store was filled with beautiful handmade crafts and traditional Icelandic products. I finally settled on a lovely cardigan, perfect for those chilly Berlin evenings. I was also tempted by one of the Icelandic Wool Horse Hats, but decided I should probably restrain myself!
For lunch, we grabbed a quick bite at Lamb Street Food. I had heard rave reviews about their lamb wraps, and they did not disappoint. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the wrap was packed with fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures. Hans particularly enjoyed the Rosti fries served with a vegan sauce. We both agreed that it was one of the best street food experiences we've had.

As evening approached, we made our way to Matur og Drykkur for dinner. This restaurant, known for its modern take on traditional Icelandic cuisine, was a culinary highlight of our trip. The restaurant's location in an old salt fish factory added to its charm, and the harbor views were simply stunning. I opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of Icelandic specialties. Hans, ever the adventurous one, decided to try the cod liver with rowan berries.

The meal was a true gastronomic experience, each dish a work of art. The flavors were bold and unexpected, showcasing the best of Icelandic ingredients. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the food, adding to the overall experience. While the food was delicious, the service was a little slow, but we didn't mind. It gave us more time to savor the flavors and enjoy the ambiance.
As we walked back to Guesthouse Sunna, the city was quiet and peaceful. The day's adventures had left us feeling both exhilarated and exhausted. I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Laugardalur and Höfði House, and maybe a drink at Dillon Whiskey Bar. But for now, I was content to simply soak in the memories of the day, the warmth of the Blue Lagoon, the stark beauty of the continental divide, and the delicious flavors of Icelandic cuisine.

It’s funny, as I sit here writing, I realize I forgot to pack a travel adapter! Lucky for me, Hans has one, but it's a good reminder to double-check those essentials. And I really wish I had brought an extra memory card for my camera. I’ve been snapping so many photos, I'm worried I'll run out of space.
Tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I'll dream of geothermal waters and tectonic plates, of lamb wraps and culinary masterpieces. Iceland, you continue to surprise and delight me. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. This trip has been so refreshing, and I’m already looking forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all!
