Icelandic Adventure: Exploring Reykjavik with Family
Day 3: Golden Circle Wonders: A Day of History and Frozen Falls
Exploring Iceland's Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park and the mesmerizing Öxarárfoss waterfall in winter's embrace.
Chasing Waterfalls and History in Iceland's Heartland
Today, Hans and I ventured into the heart of Iceland, exploring the renowned Golden Circle. After waking up, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast at Grillmarkaðurinn, preparing ourselves for a day filled with natural wonders and historical significance. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as we set out, knowing that we were about to immerse ourselves in the very landscapes that shaped Iceland's identity.
Our first stop was Þingvellir National Park, a place where history and geology intertwine in the most captivating way. Even in the depths of winter, the park held an undeniable allure. The landscape was draped in a thick blanket of snow, creating a serene and almost ethereal atmosphere. As we walked through the park, I couldn't help but marvel at the vast expanse of white, punctuated by the dark, jagged edges of the tectonic plates.
Þingvellir is more than just a pretty landscape; it's a place where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. You can literally stand between two continents! The Almannagjá gorge was particularly striking, with its towering cliffs and snow-covered ground. It was easy to imagine the Alþingi, Iceland's parliament, convening here centuries ago, making decisions that would shape the nation's future. Walking through this historic site, I felt a profound connection to Iceland's past.
To truly experience Iceland is to connect with its history and its landscape – they are inseparable.
One of the highlights of Þingvellir was undoubtedly Öxarárfoss waterfall. The short hike from the visitor center was an adventure in itself, with the trail winding through the snowy gorge. When we finally reached the waterfall, it was a breathtaking sight. Partially frozen, the water cascaded down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing display of ice and water. The surrounding rocks were covered in ice, adding to the winter wonderland feel. I couldn't resist taking dozens of photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. The falls were beautiful, and the winter setting made it all the more dramatic.
After taking in the beauty of Þingvellir, we headed to Kol Restaurant for a delicious lunch. The modern Scandinavian vibe of the restaurant was a welcome respite from the cold. We enjoyed some traditional Icelandic cuisine, savoring the flavors of the region. It was the perfect way to refuel before continuing our adventure.
Our last stop of the day was the Nordic Store in Reykjavik. I had been wanting to buy a traditional Icelandic wool sweater, and this store had a wide selection of high-quality knitwear. The store itself was charming, filled with the comforting scent of wool and the vibrant colors of Icelandic designs. I finally settled on a cozy lopapeysa, a classic Icelandic sweater, and Hans picked out a warm wool hat. I know these will be perfect for our future winter adventures!
For dinner, we had reservations at Foodcellar, and it was an experience to remember. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with live music adding to the ambiance. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a variety of Icelandic delicacies. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a culinary journey through Iceland's diverse landscape.
Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Iceland's beauty and history. Þingvellir National Park was a true highlight, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural significance. Öxarárfoss waterfall was a magical sight, and the Icelandic wool sweater I bought at the Nordic Store will be a cherished reminder of our trip. As we prepare for tomorrow's exploration of Reykjavík Maritime Museum and the Aurora Reykjavík - The Northern Lights Center, I can't help but feel excited for what adventures await us. Perhaps we’ll even sneak into Lebowski Bar for a nightcap!
