A Day of Exploration and Culinary Adventures in Holbox
Today was a beautiful blend of serene exploration and delightful culinary discoveries here on Holbox Island. After a restful night at the Naay Boutique Hotel Holbox, I was eager to explore more of what this island paradise has to offer. The weather in September is warm and humid, with temperatures averaging around 28°C (83°F), so dressing in light, breathable clothing is key.. Thankfully, I remembered to pack my sunscreen, although I'm still kicking myself for forgetting the bug spray and beach hat!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roots Pizzas a la leña Isla Holbox.. The aroma of wood-fired pizza might seem unusual for breakfast, but trust me, it was the perfect start to a day of adventure.
Hans and I shared a delicious vegetarian pizza, savoring the crispy crust and fresh toppings. It's amazing how a simple pizza can taste so extraordinary when made with such care and attention to detail. While Roots is known for its lobster pizza, we decided to keep it simple this morning.. It was a delightful experience, and I made a mental note to return for dinner to try some of their other offerings, especially given their impressive mezcal selection.
With our appetites satisfied, we set off to Isla de la Pasión.. The boat ride to the island was incredibly scenic, with the turquoise waters sparkling under the morning sun. Isla de la Pasión, or Passion Island, is a small, secluded island known for its tranquility and natural beauty. It’s only about 15 minutes by boat from Holbox, making it a perfect little escape. As we approached, I was struck by the pristine white sand and the clear, shallow waters surrounding the island.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the island, walking along the shore, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The island is a haven for birdwatchers, and we spotted several species of birds, including pelicans and frigates. The shallow waters make it ideal for wading, and I couldn't resist taking a dip to cool off from the warm September sun. The island truly lives up to its name, offering a serene and romantic ambiance that’s perfect for a relaxing getaway. It’s easy to see why it’s called the island of lovers.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest moments of serenity and connection with nature. After our tranquil visit to Isla de la Pasión, we headed to the flamingo viewing sandbar. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating, as Holbox is known for its vibrant flamingo population. To reach the sandbar, we walked along the beach towards the beachfront hotel Las Nubes de Holbox, wading through the shallows. The walk took about 45 minutes, and the water was mostly ankle to shin deep.

As we approached the sandbar, we could see the flamingos in the distance, their pink plumage standing out against the blue water. The sight was truly breathtaking. We kept a respectful distance, observing these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. It’s crucial to remember that these are wild animals, and it’s important not to disturb them. I was so glad I had my camera to capture the moment, although I wished I hadn’t forgotten my binoculars for a closer view.
The sandbar itself was a unique experience, stretching far out into the sea. The water was crystal clear, and we could see various marine creatures, including starfish and small tropical fish. It was a bit hot walking on the sandbar in the midday sun, but the gentle sea breeze kept us comfortable. This is definitely a must-do activity for any nature lover visiting Holbox. The flamingo season is between April and October, so we were lucky to witness them.
After our flamingo adventure, we were ready for a delicious lunch. We chose LUUMA, a restaurant known for its trendy vibe and outdoor setting. The restaurant has a Tulum-esque feel with a sandy floor and palm trees. It felt like a chic lounge, perfect for a relaxed afternoon meal.

I ordered the vegan soy tacos, which were quite flavorful, especially with the amazing pico de gallo. Hans opted for the chickpea pakoras, which he enjoyed. The atmosphere was fantastic, with dance beats playing softly in the background. LUUMA is definitely a great spot for cocktails and a night out with friends. The staff were very friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience.
Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Le Bazaar Boutique, located inside Luuma Bar. This boutique is a treasure trove of unique, handmade items, reflecting the island's bohemian and tropical style. I found a beautiful hand-embroidered blouse made by local artisans, which I couldn't resist buying. It’s always a pleasure to support local designers and bring home a special piece that reminds me of my travels. Le Bazaar is the kind of store that Chloé and Francesca always dreamed of finding, now available in Holbox, offering a conscious, earthy living experience.

For dinner, we decided to try Chinicuil Tacos + Mezcal Holbox Restaurant.. This restaurant specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine, with a focus on tacos and mezcal. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, with local music adding to the ambiance. We started with complimentary tortilla chips and homemade salsas, each with a unique and delicious flavor.

I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were highly recommended, and Hans tried the enchiladas with green sauce. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful and authentic, showcasing the culinary heritage of central Mexico. Of course, we had to sample some of their extensive mezcal selection. The knowledgeable staff guided us through the options, and we enjoyed sipping on this quintessential Mexican spirit. Chinicuil Tacos + Mezcal is definitely a hidden gem on Holbox, offering an exceptional culinary adventure. The restaurant is known for its great service and cozy atmosphere.
As the day drew to a close, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The September evenings in Holbox are pleasant, with temperatures cooling down to around 24°C (76°F). The humidity remains, but the gentle breezes make it comfortable to be outdoors. We reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Holbox Island.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the bioluminescence and experience a Temazcal Energético. I'm particularly excited about the bioluminescence tour, as I've heard it's a magical experience. We'll also be trying out Quartieri Holbox for breakfast, Cenaduria La Tapatia - Holbox for lunch, and AMA Japanese Restaurant for dinner. And perhaps, we'll cap the night off at The Hot Corner bar.
Holbox continues to surprise and delight me with its natural beauty and warm hospitality. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and connect with nature, while also indulging in delicious food and unique cultural experiences. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
