A Day of History and Sweet Indulgences
Today was a journey back in time, wandering through Sintra's historic center and discovering hidden gems. It was a day of immersing myself in the local culture, savoring traditional flavors, and letting the charm of this Portuguese town captivate my senses.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Passione Pizza Sintra. I know, pizza for breakfast might sound unconventional, but I had read some good things about their pizzas. It was a surprisingly satisfying start to the day, and the cozy atmosphere was just what I needed to fuel my explorations. While some reviews mention the pizza being average, I found it to be quite enjoyable, especially considering its proximity to the train station.

With a full stomach, I set out to explore the historic center of Sintra. The area is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. Cobblestone streets wind through the town, lined with colorful buildings and charming shops. I spent hours simply wandering, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The 19th-century Romanticist style is particularly striking, with its fairytale-like qualities transporting you to another era.

The beauty of Sintra lies not just in its monuments, but in the way history and nature intertwine to create a truly magical experience.
Next on my list was Abegoaria e Quinta da Pena. This enchanting place, created in 1843 by King D. Fernando and the Baron of Eschwege, is an ornamental farm designed to provide both productive and scenic functions. As I strolled through the grounds, I admired the Abegoaria, a building that once supported agricultural activities and now adds to the area's charm. The greenhouses were also fascinating, playing a vital role in maintaining the Park of Pena's arboretum. The views from Quinta da Pena were simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Sintra landscape.

For lunch, I decided to try Canto dos Trovadores. This restaurant had great reviews and seemed like the perfect place to try some authentic Portuguese cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. While my meal was good, some reviews suggest the food isn't always as impressive as expected. Still, the excellent service and pleasant ambiance made it a worthwhile experience.

After lunch, I couldn't resist a visit to Dona Estefânia - Fábrica de Queijadas e Travesseiros de Sintra. This local bakery is famous for its traditional pastries, and I had to try the queijadas and travesseiros. The queijadas, small cheese pastries, were sweet and satisfying, while the travesseiros, almond-filled puff pastries, were light and delicious. It was the perfect afternoon treat, and I even picked up a few extra to take back to Berlin for Hans.

For dinner, I chose A Praça, a vegetarian restaurant that had caught my eye. As someone who appreciates vegetarian cuisine, I was excited to see what they had to offer. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and the food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the mushroom soup and beet salad, which were both flavorful and satisfying. I am not exclusively vegetarian, but I always appreciate when vegetarian restaurants put some thought and effort into the preparation and presentation of their dishes.

Today, June 10th, also happens to be the Day of Portugal, a national holiday. While I didn't see any large-scale celebrations in Sintra, there was a palpable sense of national pride in the air. It was a special day to be exploring this beautiful country, and I felt grateful to be experiencing its rich culture and history.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of how much I enjoy solo travel. There's something incredibly liberating about being able to explore at my own pace, making spontaneous decisions, and fully immersing myself in the local culture. I am glad I decided to come to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, I have truly enjoyed my time here.
Tomorrow, I am planning to explore more of the natural beauty of the area with a trip to Rio da Mula and Lagoa Azul. I've heard they are both stunning locations, and I'm excited to see what they have to offer. I might even pack a lunch and make a day of it, enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. I am also hoping to check out House of Wonders, as I have heard good things about it, and would love to relax there after a long day of hiking.
I'm also aware that the Sintra Festival is coming up from June 12th to 21st. While my time here won't overlap with the festival, it's exciting to know that Sintra is such a vibrant cultural hub. Maybe Hans and I can come back another year to experience the festival together. I am sure he would enjoy it as well, especially the classical music and opera performances. For now, I will continue to enjoy the peace and quiet of Sintra before the festival crowds arrive.
Until tomorrow!
