Last Day Musings in Phong Nha

As my final day in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of nostalgia and gratitude. This solo journey has been nothing short of transformative, offering moments of serene beauty, thrilling adventure, and profound connection with nature and the local culture. It's amazing how a place can capture your heart in such a short time, leaving you with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. The Villas Restaurant is known for its beautiful riverside views. I savored a hearty meal while enjoying the tranquil scenery, reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had over the past twelve days. From exploring the depths of Paradise Cave to cruising along the Son River, each moment has been etched into my memory. This morning, I opted for something simple, a classic Vietnamese coffee and a bánh mì, fueling up for a day of reflection and a bit of last-minute exploration. The coffee, strong and sweet, was the perfect jolt to get me going. I thought about Fatou and Ebrima back home in Bielefeld, wondering what they were up to. I made a mental note to try and recreate this coffee for Fatou; she would love it.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those taken alone, allowing you to discover not only the world around you but also the depths within yourself.
My first official stop was the Phong Nha Tourism Center. I wanted to gather some more information about the park's conservation efforts and perhaps pick up a few maps for future reference. The center was bustling with activity, tourists planning their adventures, and locals offering guidance. It’s heartening to see how much emphasis is placed on sustainable tourism here, ensuring that the natural beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang is preserved for generations to come. I chatted with one of the staff members about the ongoing projects to protect the park’s biodiversity and support local communities. It’s inspiring to see how tourism can be a force for good when managed responsibly.

For lunch, I decided to try Lotus Restaurant. I had heard great things about their traditional Vietnamese dishes and wanted to savor one last taste of local cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff and a menu full of tempting options. I settled on a bowl of Pho, the quintessential Vietnamese noodle soup, and a plate of fresh spring rolls. The flavors were vibrant and authentic, a true reflection of the region’s culinary heritage. As I ate, I watched the world go by, soaking in the sights and sounds of Phong Nha one last time.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Phong Nha Collection, a charming shop known for its unique souvenirs and handicrafts. I wanted to find something special to take back home, a tangible reminder of my time in this remarkable place. The shop was filled with an array of beautiful items, from hand-woven textiles to intricately carved wooden sculptures. I spent quite some time browsing, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail. Finally, I settled on a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, perfect for holding spices in my kitchen back in Bielefeld. It was a simple yet meaningful memento, a piece of Phong Nha that I could carry with me always.

As the day wore on, I found myself drawn to the Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. Even though I am not Vegan, I've heard great things about the restaurant and thought I should give it a try. The restaurant was located on the main road, overlooking the river. The food was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the eggplant with peanut dish and a rainbow vermicelli salad and iced kumquat green tea. The staff was friendly, and the sitting area faced the river.

Walking back towards my guesthouse, I paused on the bridge overlooking the Son River. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the water and the surrounding karsts. It was a breathtaking sight, a perfect ending to my day and my trip. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the fresh, clean air, and whispered a silent thank you to Phong Nha for the memories, the lessons, and the inspiration. I thought about how much I've grown during my time here. Traveling solo forces you to rely on yourself, to make your own decisions, and to face whatever challenges come your way. It's empowering and liberating, a chance to discover your own strength and resilience.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Germany, carrying with me not just souvenirs and photographs, but a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the world around me. I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Fatou and Ebrima, reliving the adventures and the quiet moments of reflection. And who knows, perhaps one day we will return together, to explore more of Vietnam’s hidden gems and create new memories as a family. For now, though, I bid adieu to Phong Nha, with a promise to keep its spirit alive in my heart and in my actions, as I continue my journey towards a more sustainable and meaningful life.

As I prepare to leave, I know that Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park will forever hold a special place in my heart. It’s a destination that truly embodies the beauty and wonder of our planet, a place where nature and culture intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Until next time, Phong Nha, thank you for everything.
