A Day of Subterranean Wonders and Emerald Valleys

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. I ventured deep into the earth and then emerged into a valley of vibrant green, experiencing the raw, untamed beauty that this region of Vietnam is so famous for. It was a day that tested my mettle and rewarded me with sights I'll never forget.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at The Rice House. I fueled up with a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, eager to start my day exploring. The Rice House is known for its authentic cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the adventures ahead. It's a charming place, committed to quality and flavor, and a perfect way to start the day.

First on the agenda was Hang Va Cave. The journey there was an adventure in itself, a trek through the dense jungle that surrounds Phong Nha. The November weather was pleasantly warm and breezy, perfect for hiking, with average highs of 79°F (26°C) and lows of 68°F (20°C). I was glad I'd packed my hiking boots; the terrain was challenging, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept me going. I was a bit disappointed that I had forgotten my rain jacket, but the weather was holding up nicely.

The descent into Hang Va was like entering another world. The cave is renowned for its unique geological formations, including towering cones that are rarely found elsewhere. Navigating the slippery, rocky terrain and wading through the underground streams required a certain level of fitness, but it was all part of the thrill. I had to use ropes and safety harnesses to navigate some sections. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the sound of water dripping from the stalactites. It was an awe-inspiring experience, a reminder of the power and artistry of nature.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not on the well-trodden paths, but in the hidden depths of the earth.

Emerging from Hang Va, I felt a sense of accomplishment and wonder. I took a moment to appreciate the sunlight filtering through the trees, a stark contrast to the darkness I had just left behind. It's amazing to think that Hang Va is located only about 50 meters from the exit of the world's largest cave, Hang Son Doong, and that the two caves are believed to be connected hydrologically.

Next on my itinerary was HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich. After the intensity of the cave exploration, the valley offered a serene and tranquil escape. I had lunch at Bamboo Chopsticks, a local restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and vegan options. The restaurant champions sustainability by minimizing plastic use, refilling water for free, and sourcing ingredients locally. I enjoyed a delicious meal while taking in the views of the surrounding landscape. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true taste of Vietnam.

HaVa Valley, also known as Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich (Emerald Valley), is a sight to behold. The valley is characterized by its lush greenery, tranquil atmosphere, and captivating natural landscapes. As I entered, I was greeted by towering mountains and vibrant vegetation, creating a serene backdrop for my explorations. The stream has a clear jade-green color, so you can easily see the small pebbles sparkling under the bottom. This is also the reason why it is also known as the Emerald Valley.

I spent the afternoon exploring the valley, hiking along the well-marked trails and taking in the panoramic views. The fresh air and the sounds of nature were incredibly soothing. I could see why this place is a favorite among nature enthusiasts and families. I made sure to stop at Vịnh Sỏi Vàng (Golden Pebble Bay), an area on the riverbank with smooth, glittering rocks that reflect the sun. The natural scenery combined with the emerald green river water creates the perfect background for artistic photographs.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to Phong Nha Family Restaurant (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM) for dinner. This charming local eatery is known for its delicious food and friendly staff. I enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Vietnamese dishes, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures. The owner, Vietj, is known for being friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has a wide range of options at reasonable prices, and the staff members are incredibly friendly.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tien Son Cave. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Phong Nha's subterranean wonders. I might also check out Jungle Boss Pub and Restaurant in the evening.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where adventure and tranquility coexist, offering a truly unforgettable experience. I am so glad I decided to come here on my solo journey. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. The solitude is good for me, it gives me time to reflect on my life back in Bielefeld. I miss Fatou and Ebrima, but I know this journey is something I needed to do for myself.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by Phong Nha Collection to pick up a small souvenir to remind me of this incredible day. Supporting local businesses is important to me, and I'm glad I could contribute to the local economy.

I encourage anyone seeking an authentic and immersive travel experience to add this destination to their list. You won't be disappointed.

The park is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and remarkable caves, including the world-famous Son Doong Cave, the largest cave on the planet. Beyond its majestic caves, Phong Nha-Ke Bang offers an array of activities for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Visitors can enjoy hiking through the lush terrain, kayaking on scenic rivers, and even swimming in crystal-clear waters. The park is also rich in wildlife, providing a chance to spot monkeys, birds, and various reptiles in their natural habitat.

I am grateful for this opportunity to explore such a unique and beautiful part of the world. It's experiences like these that remind me why I love to travel and share my stories with all of you. I hope you'll join me tomorrow as I continue my journey through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.
