Exploring the Ancient Forests of Yakushima: A Solo Adventure
Day 13: Farewell Yakushima: A Day of Waterfalls, Culture, and Sweet Gelato
Discover Senpiro Falls, immerse in Yakushima's culture, and savor local gelato on my final day exploring this stunning island paradise.
A Fond Farewell to Yakushima
As my journey on this enchanting island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. From ancient forests to serene coastlines, Yakushima has captivated my senses and left an indelible mark on my soul. Today, I embarked on a final exploration, eager to soak in the last moments of this natural paradise before heading back to Leipzig.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. There's something uniquely charming about airport restaurants, especially in smaller locales like this. The old-school vibe was comforting, reminiscent of the soba shops I used to frequent during my younger years. I purchased a meal ticket at the counter and enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal, fueling up for the day's adventures.
With a full stomach, I set off to visit Senpiro Falls, one of Yakushima's most renowned waterfalls. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush landscapes that seemed to whisper ancient secrets. As I approached the falls, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation for the sight that awaited me.
Senpiro Falls is truly a sight to behold. The water plummets 60 meters down a massive granite rock face, creating a spectacle of natural power and beauty. The sheer size of the rock, said to resemble a thousand people holding hands, is what gives the waterfall its name. I took my time at the viewing area, mesmerized by the falling water and the surrounding greenery. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and ancient trees. It was the perfect place for quiet contemplation, a moment to appreciate the grandeur of nature.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After the falls, I decided to immerse myself in the local culture at the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. This center serves as a hub for learning about the island's unique environment and the traditional lifestyles of its people. The exhibits were informative, offering insights into the island's history, flora, and fauna. I particularly enjoyed the film 'Yakushima – a symphony of forests and water,' which showcased the island's beauty in stunning detail. Though the English subtitles were sparse, the visual storytelling transcended any language barriers.
The center also had a shop, and I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs to remind me of my time here. I found a beautiful postcard depicting the Jomon Sugi cedar and a small handcrafted wooden ornament. These little mementos will serve as tangible reminders of the magic I experienced in Yakushima.

For lunch, I ventured to Kamogawa Restaurant in Anbo, a local favorite known for its traditional Japanese dishes and fresh seafood. This no-frills eatery is where locals and travelers alike gather to enjoy authentic flavors in a friendly atmosphere. I opted for the flying fish set meal, a Yakushima specialty. The fish was expertly prepared, with a crispy exterior and tender, flavorful meat. It was a true taste of the island, a culinary experience I won't soon forget.

Before heading to dinner, I had to make a stop at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. This charming gelato shop offers a variety of flavors made with local fruits and ingredients. I indulged in a scoop of ocean salt gelato and a scoop of Tankan orange. The combination was heavenly, a sweet and savory treat that perfectly captured the essence of Yakushima. I enjoyed my gelato on one of the hammocks inside the shop, savoring the moment and the delicious flavors.

As the day wound down, I treated myself to a final dinner at DINING CAFE BAR SLOW. This cozy spot is known for its diverse menu, featuring everything from salads and soups to pasta and burgers. I decided on a comforting plate of seafood pasta, a fitting end to my culinary journey on the island. The restaurant had a lovely view of the surrounding forest, adding to the relaxing ambiance.

With a contented heart and a full stomach, I made my way back to my guesthouse, ready to pack my bags and prepare for my departure. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this extraordinary island. Yakushima has challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature.
Though my time here has come to an end, the memories I've made will last a lifetime. I'll carry the spirit of Yakushima with me, a reminder to embrace adventure, appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and always seek out new experiences.
Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Leipzig, carrying with me not just souvenirs, but a renewed sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the world around me. Yakushima, you will be missed, but never forgotten.
