A Fond Farewell to Hiiumaa

As our Hiiumaa adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family on this enchanting island. Today was a blend of exploration and savoring the local culture, a perfect culmination of our Estonian journey. It’s funny how a place can feel both familiar and brand new, rekindling a sense of belonging while sparking fresh curiosity.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at PANNKOOGIMAJA. The name, meaning 'Pancake House,' was certainly fitting! The aroma of freshly made pancakes filled the air, instantly transporting me back to my childhood in Võru. Kati, Hans and I each ordered a stack, and they were wonderfully light and fluffy, a far cry from the dense German pancakes I sometimes attempt at home. It was a delightful way to fuel up for the day's adventures, reminiscing about simpler times and creating new memories with my family. It was a perfect way to start our day, and I made a mental note to try and recreate these pancakes when we return to Leipzig – a little taste of Estonia to brighten our mornings.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the Elamuskeskus Tuuletorn - Windtower Experience. This modern attraction promised panoramic views of Hiiumaa, and it did not disappoint. As we ascended, the landscape unfolded beneath us, revealing a tapestry of green forests, golden fields, and the sparkling blue sea. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. Kati was particularly thrilled, snapping photos from every angle, determined to capture the beauty of her ancestral homeland. I must admit, even Hans, ever the pragmatic architect, was impressed by the sheer scale and design of the tower. It was a great experience that allowed us to see the island from a new perspective, and appreciate its natural beauty even more.

“Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a place is to see it from above, to gain a sense of perspective that grounds you even as you soar.”

After the Windtower, we journeyed south to the Sõru rear Lighthouse. The lighthouse stood as a silent sentinel, a testament to Hiiumaa's maritime history. The Sõru lighthouses, built in the early 20th century, served as leading lights to guide ships safely through the Soela Strait. It was a history lesson etched in stone and sea. The rear lighthouse, with its sturdy frame and weathered exterior, exuded a sense of timelessness. I imagined the countless sailors who had relied on its steady beam to navigate the treacherous waters. I shared stories with Kati about Estonia's seafaring past, hoping to instill in her a sense of pride in our heritage. The weather was sunny, around 14 degrees Celsius, with a slight breeze. Perfect weather for exploring the coast and taking in the views. It was a peaceful spot, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, and I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me as I gazed out at the horizon.

Lunch was a casual affair at Söökla Sõnajala, a local eatery known for its traditional Estonian fare. The atmosphere was unpretentious and welcoming, and the menu featured hearty dishes that spoke of home-cooked goodness. I opted for the päevapraad, or daily special, which turned out to be a generous portion of roast pork with potatoes and sauerkraut. It was simple, satisfying, and utterly delicious. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, tried the verivorst, or blood sausage, a local delicacy. Kati, however, stuck to a safe option of kartul ja kaste (potatoes and gravy). The meal was a true taste of Estonia, a reminder of the flavors I grew up with. It was also incredibly affordable, a welcome change from the often-exorbitant prices in Leipzig.

As the day wound down, we decided to celebrate our Hiiumaa adventure with a final dinner at Rannapaargu restaurant. Located right on the beach, this restaurant offered stunning views of the sunset over the Baltic Sea. The ambiance was relaxed and romantic, and the menu featured fresh seafood and local specialties. I savored a plate of grilled flounder, while Hans indulged in a hearty portion of smoked eel. Kati, of course, opted for the familiar comfort of French fries. As we ate, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to our Hiiumaa journey.

Our last stop of the day was at Luige baar, a cozy bar in Käina. The bar had a friendly, local vibe, and we enjoyed a few drinks while chatting with some of the patrons. Luige Baar is known for its late-night hours and welcoming atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on our trip. Sipping my õlu (beer), I felt a deep sense of contentment. Hiiumaa had exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and family bonding. It was a journey that had nourished my soul and reconnected me with my roots. As we prepared to leave, I felt a pang of sadness, but also a sense of gratitude for the memories we had created.
