Day 7: A Taste of Local Life: Discovering Puerto Natales' Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Puerto Natales with local crafts, unique spirits, and authentic Patagonian cuisine. A day of delightful discoveries!
Finding the Heart of Puerto Natales
Today was all about diving deeper into the soul of Puerto Natales, seeking out the experiences that truly define this charming Patagonian town. David, Aina, and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to uncover the local treasures that guidebooks often overlook. It’s these kinds of days, where we wander without a strict agenda, that often lead to the most memorable moments.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Taller Cocina Saludable. It's a delightful spot facing the city's plaza, known for its healthy options. I opted for a gluten-free pastry and a cup of herbal tea, while David enjoyed a more traditional breakfast. Aina, ever the adventurous one, tried a vegan smoothie. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. What I particularly loved about El Taller was the cozy ambiance; it felt like a warm embrace on a crisp morning.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we ventured to La Tehuelche. This shop is a treasure trove of locally produced crafts and curated pieces from the Patagonia region. As someone who appreciates the artistry and skill that goes into handmade items, I was immediately drawn to the intricate weavings and unique designs. I found a beautiful wall hanging depicting the iconic Torres del Paine, a perfect memento of our journey. Aina, with her keen eye for fashion, picked out a hand-knitted scarf, while David admired the selection of wooden carvings. It's wonderful to support local artisans and bring home something truly special.

Sometimes, the best souvenirs aren't just objects, but the stories and connections we make along the way.
Next on our list was the Last Hope Distillery. Now, I must admit, I'm not usually one for strong spirits, but the allure of Chile's first whisky and gin distillery was too much to resist. The distillery is run by an Australian couple, Kiera and Matt, who took a leap of faith and opened their distillery in Puerto Natales. We took a tour guided by one of the owners, who was incredibly funny. Last Hope Distillery uses unique Patagonian ingredients, such as calafate and maqui, giving their gins distinctive flavors. David, of course, was in his element, sampling the various gins and learning about the distillation process. Aina and I opted for a couple of their creative cocktails, infused with local berries and herbs. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and it was easy to see why this place has become a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

For lunch, we headed to Picada Mercadito Restaurante ORO NEGRO. This cozy restaurant is known for its authentic Chilean cuisine and warm hospitality. The aroma of traditional dishes filled the air as we stepped inside, and we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I decided on the Paila Marina, a hearty seafood stew, while David chose the Poor Loin with rice. Aina, always eager to try new things, ordered the Poultry Casserole. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. It was the perfect place to refuel after a busy morning.

After lunch, we decided to do a little more shopping, stopping at Regalos Vita Natales. This gift shop had a wide array of items, from children's toys to handmade ornaments. We were able to find a few small gifts for friends back home. It was a great place to find unique souvenirs and support local businesses.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant Tia Carlina for dinner. This local gem is renowned for its homemade cuisine and warm, family atmosphere. The restaurant was conveniently located near public transportation. The menu featured a variety of dishes, including burgers, veal milanesa, and salmon lo pobre. The portions were generous and the prices fair. I chose the salmon lo pobre, while David opted for the veal milanesa. Aina, craving something comforting, ordered a burger. We all agreed that the homemade fries were exceptional. The staff were welcoming, and the cozy environment made us feel right at home.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Costanera De Puerto Natales and Plaza Bernardo O'Higgins. I am particularly looking forward to a relaxing stroll along the waterfront. Maybe we will end the day with a drink at Wild Restobar & Cervecería.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and savoring the simple pleasures of travel. It's not just about seeing the sights, but about connecting with the local culture, supporting small businesses, and creating lasting memories with my loved ones. And as we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Patagonia with my family.
Back at the hotel, I realized I'd forgotten my binoculars and portable phone charger. I will need to remember to get those tomorrow. It's always something, isn't it?
Patagonia continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
