Salty Air and Stories by the Sea

Today in Essaouira felt like stepping into a postcard, each corner revealing a new facet of this captivating coastal town. The air was thick with the scent of salt and the cries of gulls, a symphony that composed the soundtrack to our day. It’s amazing how a place can whisper stories of its past while vibrantly living in the present.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at The Hungry Nomad Rooftop Essaouira. The rooftop setting offered a stunning panorama of the city waking up. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan flavors and familiar breakfast staples. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, while Hans went for a more familiar continental option. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we made our way to Port de Essaouira. The port was a hive of activity, with fishermen unloading their morning catch and boats bobbing gently in the water. The vibrant colors of the fishing boats created a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. I loved watching the fishermen at work. Their faces told stories of a life intertwined with the sea. The air was filled with the cries of seagulls hoping for a stray fish, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.

Next on our list was the Harbour Scala. This historic rampart offered panoramic views of the port and the surrounding coastline. The ancient cannons pointed out to sea, silent reminders of the town's strategic importance in centuries past. We strolled along the ramparts, taking in the breathtaking views and imagining what life must have been like when Essaouira was a major trading hub. The kids were fascinated by the cannons, running from one to the next and pretending to fire them out to sea. It was a great way to bring history to life for them.

For lunch, we ventured into the medina and found ourselves at Restaurant d'Orient et d'Ailleurs. This charming restaurant offered a fusion of Moroccan and international flavors, and the cozy atmosphere made us feel right at home. I decided to try the tagine, while Hans opted for a seafood dish. Both were delicious, and the service was warm and attentive. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, offering a peaceful respite from the bustling streets of the medina. It felt like a hidden gem, and we were so glad we stumbled upon it.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Koulchi Concept Store. This unique shop was a treasure trove of Moroccan crafts, clothing, and home decor items. I loved browsing the colorful displays and discovering unique souvenirs to take back home. The store was set over several floors, each offering a different selection of goods. It was like a maze of beautiful things, and I could have easily spent hours exploring every nook and cranny.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Umia Restaurant for dinner. This elegant restaurant was located right on the skala, offering stunning views of the ocean. The menu was a sophisticated take on Moroccan cuisine, and the ambiance was both romantic and refined. I opted for the seafood, while Hans chose a meat dish. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the natural beauty surrounding Essaouira with Lou's Rides and some ecotourism and hiking. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of seeing more of the countryside and experiencing the local flora and fauna. Hans is keen on trying out Lou's Rides, and I must admit, the idea of a leisurely ride through the landscape is quite appealing.

The day felt like a beautiful blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. I feel incredibly fortunate to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As I reflect on our adventures, I am reminded of why I love to travel – the opportunity to immerse myself in new cultures, connect with people from all walks of life, and discover the beauty that exists in every corner of our world. It's funny, isn't it? How a place so different from my everyday life in Berlin can feel so much like home. Maybe it's the shared human experience, the universal language of laughter and connection that transcends borders and cultures. Or maybe it's simply the magic of Essaouira, a place that has captured my heart and soul in ways I never expected. Whatever it is, I'm grateful for the experience and eager to see what other treasures this enchanting town has in store for us.

I'm also thankful that I remembered to pack my camera this time.
