Exploring the Coastal Charms of Essaouira with Family
Day 11: Farewell Essaouira: A Final Day of Coastal Bliss
Saying goodbye to Essaouira with a sun-kissed beach visit, historical exploration, and delightful culinary experiences. A perfect family farewell.
Adieu, Essaouira!
As the sun sets on our Moroccan adventure, I find myself reflecting on the incredible memories we've made in Essaouira. Today marked our last day, and we wanted to soak up every last bit of this charming coastal town. It was a day filled with sandy toes, historical discoveries, and, of course, delicious food. It's hard to believe our time here is already coming to an end, but I am so grateful for the experiences we've shared as a family.
The day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant des Rêves. The name translates to Restaurant of Dreams, and it certainly lived up to its moniker. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Moroccan flavors were the perfect way to start our final day. I opted for a classic Moroccan breakfast – msemen (pancakes) with honey and a steaming pot of mint tea. It was just what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed straight for Plage d'Essaouira. The beach here is unlike any I’ve seen. The wind was definitely up, which I quickly discovered is typical for Essaouira, making it a haven for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Hans was in his element, watching them glide effortlessly across the waves. I, on the other hand, was content to stroll along the shore, feeling the cool Atlantic breeze on my face. The kids, of course, were in pure heaven, building sandcastles and chasing the waves. It was a bit too chilly for a swim, even though it's late March, but the beach was still buzzing with activity.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
After our beach escapade, we decided to delve into a bit of history. We made our way to Borj El Barmil, an ancient military tower overlooking the sea. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we found out that Borj El Barmil was undergoing maintenance and was closed to the public. While it was a bit of a disappointment not to be able to climb to the top and take in the panoramic views, just seeing the structure itself was impressive. I later learned that it was built in the 18th century as a defensive structure, offering strategic surveillance against potential sea threats. I could almost picture the soldiers standing guard, watching for approaching ships.

Lunchtime rolled around, and we were ready to experience more of Essaouira’s culinary scene. We chose Restaurant Khmissa, a small, family-run place tucked away in a quiet alley. It was a complete contrast to the bustling beach, offering a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Apparently, it only seats about eight people! We were lucky enough to snag a spot and were immediately greeted with warm smiles and the enticing aroma of Moroccan spices. We shared a tagine and some flavorful couscous, savoring every bite. This little gem felt like a true taste of authentic Essaouira.

In the late afternoon, feeling a bit peckish, we decided to check out La Rencontre, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I had a glass of wine while Hans enjoyed a local beer. It was the perfect spot to unwind and watch the world go by. The kids enjoyed some juice and snacks. There was music playing, and the atmosphere was very relaxed and jovial. It felt like a real slice of Essaouira life.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a final Moroccan dinner at Restaurant Le Sirocco. I had read great reviews about their blend of Moroccan and French cuisine, and we were eager to try it. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, with beautiful decor and a calm atmosphere. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the service was top-notch. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Hans chose a seafood dish. Both were absolutely delicious, a perfect ending to our culinary journey in Essaouira.

Thinking back to when I lived in Alcalá de Guadaira, Spain, I remember the simple joys of exploring local markets and hidden gems. Essaouira has reminded me of that feeling – the joy of discovering new flavors and experiences in unexpected places. This trip has not only been a wonderful family vacation but also a reminder of the importance of embracing new cultures and appreciating the beauty of the world around us.
As we prepare to leave Essaouira tomorrow and head back to Berlin, I’m filled with a mix of emotions. I’m sad to say goodbye to this charming coastal town, but I’m also excited to return home and share our adventures with friends and family. I’m already looking forward to planning our next trip, perhaps somewhere closer to home in Germany, where we can explore the beautiful Brandenburg countryside. But for now, I’ll cherish the memories we’ve made in Essaouira, a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.
I’m so glad we chose to stay at Hotel Des Iles. Its location near the beach and local attractions made it the perfect base for our adventures. The amenities, including the swimming pool and restaurant, ensured a comfortable and pleasant stay for the whole family.
