A Day of Royal History and Flavors

Today, Hans and I journeyed deeper into Morocco's rich tapestry, trading the serene landscapes of Moulay Idriss for the imperial city of Meknes. It was a day of grand architecture, historical reflection, and, of course, delightful culinary experiences. Come along as I share our day exploring the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the ancient granaries of Heri es-Souani, paired with tastes that captured the essence of Moroccan hospitality.

Our morning began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. While not a hotel, Scorpion House is Mike Richardson's private home that offers personalized menus for lunch with panoramic views. Perched on a hillside, the views stretch over the town and down to Volubilis. It was the perfect setting to fuel up for the day ahead, a taste of Moroccan hospitality to start our explorations. It felt like a true home, instilling a sense of peace before a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a site I had eagerly anticipated. Finding it wasn't as straightforward as I'd imagined; it's discreetly tucked away, requiring a bit of local guidance. As we approached, the city's vibrant energy seemed to fade, replaced by a palpable sense of reverence. The mausoleum stands as a testament to Moulay Ismail, the Sultan who transformed Meknes into an imperial city during his reign from 1672 to 1727.

The architecture immediately captivated me. The entrance, adorned with exquisite mosaics and carvings, showcased the extraordinary skill of Moroccan artisans. Inside, the courtyards exuded a sense of tranquility, inviting quiet contemplation. Although non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the tomb room itself, the antechamber was breathtaking. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating intricately carved plaster and delicately patterned zellij tiles. A small fountain, marked with an eight-pointed star, sat in the center, a classic element of Moroccan design. The symmetry was perfect, creating a space of magnificent beauty. Hans and I were both struck by the peacefulness of the space, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside.

Leaving the mausoleum, we journeyed to Heri es-Souani, a massive structure that once served as a granary and stable during Moulay Ismail's time. Known as the 'silo of the norias', it was part of a larger complex that included the House of the Ten Norias, which supplied water to the palaces, and the Agdal Basin. The sheer scale of the granary was awe-inspiring. Its thick walls and arched ceilings spoke of a time when Meknes was not only a place of royal residence but also a strategic stronghold.

Walking through the ruins, I imagined the bustling activity that once filled these spaces – the storage of grains, the housing of thousands of horses, and the intricate system of water management that kept everything running smoothly. The underground water channels were particularly impressive, a testament to the ingenuity of the architects and engineers of the time. Despite the damage from an 18th-century earthquake, the site still resonated with history and grandeur.

Traveling is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing the history and culture that shaped them.

For lunch, we ventured to Haytam, a local restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The interior was inviting, decorated in a way that reflected the cultural heritage of Morocco. We were greeted with the aroma of spices, instantly making us feel at home. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, opted for the lamb tagine, which came highly recommended. I chose the chicken skewers, which were equally flavorful, seasoned with parsley and served with fried pumpkin. The meal was a delightful exploration of Moroccan flavors, each dish telling its own story.

While the food was tasty, the service left something to be desired. However, the flavors of the food made up for it. We ended our meal with refreshing mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea, I felt a sense of contentment, grateful for the opportunity to experience the local culture through its cuisine.

After lunch, we took some time to explore the shops at زيارة باب مولاي إدريس. This shop promotes local Moroccan products, connecting artisans and cooperatives with a wider audience. It was a great opportunity to find unique souvenirs and support the local economy. I was particularly drawn to the traditional handicrafts and textiles, each piece reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. This Moroccan house offered panoramic views of Volubilis from its terrace. The restaurant served Moroccan cuisine in a traditional dining area. We enjoyed a flavorful meal, reflecting on the day's adventures. The luxurious service added to the experience.

Reflecting on our day, I am struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate Meknes. From the solemn beauty of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail to the grandeur of Heri es-Souani and the flavorful dishes we savored, every moment was a reminder of Morocco's rich heritage. As we prepare to leave Meknes and head towards Dar El-Makhzen and Lahdim Square tomorrow, I carry with me a deeper appreciation for this imperial city and its people.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Dar El-Makhzen and Lahdim Square. I'm excited to see more of what Meknes has to offer and to continue immersing ourselves in its culture and history.

Until then, good night from Morocco.
