Day 5: A Day Among Saints and Forgotten Herbs
Discover the spiritual beauty of Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe and the serene Giardino Rasponi in Ravenna with Mali and Hans.
Finding Peace in Ravenna's Hidden Corners
Today, Hans and I sought solace and inspiration in Ravenna's blend of grand history and quiet nature. We started our day with a hearty breakfast, ventured into a stunning basilica, and ended it with a peaceful stroll through a hidden garden. Ravenna continues to surprise me with its ability to offer both the awe-inspiring and the intimately charming.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Vecchia Falegnameria. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread made it the perfect start. I opted for a simple yet satisfying focaccia with a cappuccino, while Hans enjoyed the scrambled eggs with bacon. It reminded me of our little kitchen back in Hannover, where the smell of German baking often fills the air. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe.

The basilica is located a short distance from the city center, about 8 kilometers south of Ravenna, in Classe. As we approached, the sheer scale of the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe was breathtaking. The exterior, with its tall cylindrical bell tower, was impressive, but nothing could have prepared me for the interior. Stepping inside felt like entering a different world. The light filtering through the windows illuminated the stunning mosaics that adorned the apse and triumphal arch.

The mosaics at Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe are truly awe-inspiring. The apse mosaic, dating back to the 6th century, depicts Saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna, in a green, paradisiacal landscape. He is shown with his arms raised in prayer, surrounded by twelve white lambs symbolizing the apostles. Above him, a jeweled cross floats in a star-spangled sky, representing the Transfiguration of Christ.
Hans, with his engineering mind, was fascinated by the architectural details, while I was completely absorbed by the artistry and the stories told through the mosaics. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the plants, rocks, and birds captured my imagination. It was easy to get lost in the symbolism, each element carefully placed to convey a deeper meaning.
In every corner of Ravenna, history whispers and beauty unfolds.
After spending a considerable time soaking in the basilica's serene atmosphere, we decided to visit the Giardino Rasponi o delle erbe dimenticate, also known as the Rasponi Garden or the Garden of Forgotten Herbs. It was a welcome change of pace, transitioning from the grandeur of the basilica to the intimate charm of a hidden garden.

Finding the Giardino Rasponi felt like discovering a secret. Tucked away just off Piazza J.F. Kennedy, behind the Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, it’s a tiny haven of peace and beauty. As we stepped through the entrance, we were greeted by the gentle sound of a fountain and the fragrant scent of herbs. The garden is small, but perfectly formed, with a central fountain surrounded by beds of flowers and herbs. Pomegranate and apple trees provided shade, and small tables were scattered throughout, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
I was particularly enchanted by the variety of herbs, each labeled with its name and properties. It reminded me of my own little herb garden back in Hannover, where I grow Thai basil, mint, and lemongrass for my cooking classes. I imagined using some of these forgotten herbs in my dishes, adding a unique twist to traditional Thai flavors.
Hans and I strolled hand-in-hand through the garden, enjoying the peaceful ambiance. We paused to admire the fountain, its gentle splashing a soothing soundtrack to our walk. It was the perfect place to reflect on the morning's visit to the basilica and to simply enjoy each other's company. The Giardino Rasponi provided a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life.
For lunch, we chose Trattoria La Rustica, drawn in by its promise of traditional Romagnan cuisine. We shared a platter of *salumi* and *formaggi* , savoring the local flavors. Hans ordered the *cappelletti al ragù di carne*, while I opted for the *tagliatelle con strigoli pinoli e asparagi*. The pasta was handmade, and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. It felt like a truly authentic Italian meal, the kind you can only find in a family-run *trattoria*.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip, we decided to explore Ravenna's nightlife. We ventured to Fargo, a bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. We settled in at an outdoor table, ordered a couple of *aperol spritzes*, and watched as the locals began to gather. The bar had a lively, yet laid-back vibe, and it was a great spot to soak in the local culture.
