Historical and Cultural Journey in Ravenna, Italy
Day 6: Whispers of Emperors and Sacred Spaces: Discovering Ravenna's Ancient Soul
Journey through Ravenna's historical landmarks with Mali and Hans, exploring mausoleums, churches, and vintage finds in this mosaic-rich city.
Echoes of Eternity in Ravenna
Today, Ravenna felt like stepping directly into a history book, each location whispering tales of emperors, saints, and the artistic souls who immortalized them in breathtaking mosaics. Hans and I embarked on a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and a touch of vintage charm. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing these experiences – hoping to inspire you to discover the beauty hidden in every corner of the world.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Trattoria da Betti. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. I opted for a simple yet satisfying pastry, while Hans enjoyed a more substantial breakfast with eggs and local cheese. It’s always a treat to start the day with a traditional Italian breakfast; it reminds me of the simple joys in life.
Theodoric's Final Resting Place
Our first stop was the Mausoleum of Theodoric. As we approached the structure, its imposing presence against the clear blue sky was truly awe-inspiring. Theodoric the Great, an Ostrogothic King, built this mausoleum for himself in 520 AD. The unique architecture, with its massive dome made from a single piece of Istrian stone, is a testament to the ingenuity of the craftsmen of that era.

Walking around the mausoleum, I couldn't help but marvel at the precision and skill required to construct such a monumental structure so many centuries ago. Hans, ever the engineer, was particularly fascinated by the engineering aspects of the dome. We climbed the external staircase to the upper floor, imagining what it must have been like when Theodoric’s remains were housed here. Although his remains were later removed, the sense of history lingered in the air. The panoramic views of the surrounding parkland from the upper level provided a moment of tranquility and reflection.
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
A Serene Sanctuary: Church of Saint Mary Maggiore
Next on our itinerary was the Church of Saint Mary Maggiore. In contrast to the imposing Mausoleum, this church exuded a sense of serene simplicity. Originally built in the 5th century, it has undergone several renovations, most notably in the Baroque style by architect Pietro Grossi in 1671.

Inside, the church was peaceful and quiet, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. The nave and two aisles, separated by rows of round arches and ancient columns, created a sense of spaciousness and calm. I was particularly drawn to the small altar dedicated to Sancta Maria a tumoribus, a representation of the Virgin Mary to whom believers pray for recovery from illness. The votive offerings decorating the wall were a poignant reminder of the power of faith and hope.
As we wandered through the church, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the countless people who had sought solace and inspiration within these walls over the centuries. The simple beauty of the church, with its unadorned apse and cylindrical bell tower, was a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
A Culinary Interlude at Radici
After immersing ourselves in history and spirituality, it was time for lunch. We headed to Radici - Cucina e Cantina , a restaurant recommended for its authentic local cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and we were promptly seated by a friendly waiter. We decided to share a selection of dishes, starting with the *cappelletti al ragu*, a traditional Romagna pasta dish that was simply divine. For our main course, we opted for grilled seafood, which was fresh and flavorful. The meal was perfectly complemented by a bottle of local wine, recommended by the sommelier. Radici proved to be an excellent choice, offering a true taste of Ravenna's culinary heritage.

I found a beautiful silk scarf with an intricate floral pattern, which I knew would be the perfect addition to my wardrobe. Hans, surprisingly, discovered a vintage leather jacket that fit him perfectly. The owner of the shop was incredibly helpful and shared stories about some of the more interesting pieces in the collection. Shopping at Ravenna Vintage was not just about buying clothes; it was about discovering history and expressing personal style in a sustainable way.
Evening Reflections and Culinary Delights
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Gardèla for dinner. This restaurant, known for its traditional Romagna cuisine, had been highly recommended by several locals. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We started with *gnocco fritto con veli di coppa di testa*, a local specialty that was absolutely delicious. For our main courses, Hans chose the grilled meat, while I opted for the handmade pasta with truffle sauce. Each dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, showcasing the rich flavors of the region.

Over dinner, Hans and I reminisced about the highlights of our day. From the imposing Mausoleum of Theodoric to the serene Church of Saint Mary Maggiore, and the delightful culinary experiences at Radici and La Gardèla, Ravenna had truly captivated us with its rich history, culture, and charm. As we savored the last bites of our meal, we felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences together.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Chiesa di Sant'Eufemia-Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra and the Battistero degli Ariani, further immersing ourselves in Ravenna's historical and artistic treasures. We might also stop by Zero4 Il Pub in Centro for a relaxing evening drink. Until then, *arrivederci* from beautiful Ravenna!
As I reflect on today's journey, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected and seeking out the hidden gems that lie just beyond the well-trodden path. Whether it's a quiet moment of reflection in an ancient church or a chance encounter with a vintage treasure, it's these moments that make travel so enriching and rewarding. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the words of the great Maya Angelou:
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.
Perhaps that’s what I love most about these trips with Hans. We connect, we explore, and we always come away with a deeper understanding of each other and the world around us. And isn't that what life is all about?
