A Day Among Saints and Emperors

Today, Hans and I embarked on a journey through time, wandering through the heart of Ravenna to witness the breathtaking mosaics that have captivated visitors for centuries. It was a day filled with awe and wonder, as we stepped into the sacred spaces that hold stories of emperors, saints, and the rich tapestry of Byzantine history. The sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow on the city's ancient streets, making our exploration even more magical.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Trattoria Al Cerchio. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I savored a simple yet satisfying breakfast of crusty bread with local cheese and a cappuccino, while Hans enjoyed a plate of cured meats and a strong espresso. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The trattoria buzzed with locals, their lively chatter creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It felt like a true taste of Ravenna, setting the stage for the cultural immersion that awaited us.

Our first stop was the Basilica of San Vitale. As we approached, the basilica's unassuming exterior gave little hint of the artistic treasures hidden within. But as we stepped inside, we were immediately transported to another world. The interior was a kaleidoscope of colors, with intricate mosaics covering every surface. The sheer scale and artistry of the mosaics were breathtaking. I found myself craning my neck, trying to take in every detail of the vibrant scenes depicting biblical stories and Byzantine emperors.

The mosaics of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora were particularly striking. Their regal presence and elaborate attire spoke volumes about the power and grandeur of the Byzantine Empire. It was fascinating to learn about the history and symbolism behind each mosaic, piecing together the stories of the people and events that shaped Ravenna's past. Hans, ever the engineer, was particularly impressed by the architectural design of the basilica, marveling at the way the light filtered through the windows, illuminating the mosaics in a soft, ethereal glow.

To witness the mosaics of Ravenna is to step into a world where art, history, and faith intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on the soul.

Next on our itinerary was the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. This small, unassuming building held some of the oldest and most exquisite mosaics in Ravenna. The deep blue and gold hues of the mosaics created a sense of serenity and otherworldliness. The starry sky on the ceiling was particularly captivating, evoking a sense of wonder and contemplation. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I gazed at the intricate patterns and symbols, reflecting on the passage of time and the enduring power of art.

The Mausoleo's mosaics, dating back to the 5th century, offered a glimpse into the early Christian world, with depictions of the Good Shepherd and other biblical figures. It was humbling to stand in a space that had witnessed centuries of history, imagining the countless people who had come before us to admire these timeless works of art. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the subtle variations in the mosaic tiles, noting the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans who had created them.

Our final stop of the day was the Battistero Neoniano (o degli Ortodossi). This octagonal baptistery, also known as the Orthodox Baptistery, is one of the oldest monuments in Ravenna. As we entered, we were immediately struck by the vibrant colors and intricate details of the mosaics that adorned the dome. The central mosaic depicted the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist, surrounded by the twelve apostles. The artistry and symbolism of the mosaics were truly captivating, offering a glimpse into the religious beliefs and practices of the early Christian era.

The Baptistery's octagonal shape, symbolizing regeneration and eternity, added to the sense of sacredness and wonder. I found myself lost in contemplation, reflecting on the spiritual significance of baptism and the promise of new life. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the architectural design of the baptistery, noting the use of hollow tubes in the dome to reduce weight.

For lunch, we ventured to Osteria dei Battibecchi , a charming restaurant known for its authentic Romagna cuisine. We shared a plate of cappelletti in brodo, a traditional pasta dish served in a savory broth. The pasta was delicate and flavorful, and the broth was rich and comforting. It was the perfect midday meal, providing us with a taste of local flavors and a boost of energy for the afternoon's explorations.

After a satisfying lunch, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Mosaici di Ravenna , a shop specializing in mosaic art. As evening approached, we made our way to Osteria Del Tempo Perso , a restaurant renowned for its intimate atmosphere and innovative cuisine. The restaurant's warm tones, informal service, and carefully selected photos created a welcoming ambiance. We savored a delicious dinner of seafood risotto and grilled vegetables, accompanied by a bottle of local wine. The risotto was creamy and flavorful, and the vegetables were perfectly grilled. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and artistic discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Ravenna's history with a visit to Classis Ravenna – Museo della Città e del Territorio and the Old Port of Classe - Parco Archeologico di Classe. Today was a testament to the power of art and history to transport us to another time and place.
