A Whirlwind Start in Salzburg

Arriving in Salzburg after a scenic drive from Bonn, I was immediately captivated by the city's charm. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of blooming flowers and the promise of classical music. As a floral designer with a penchant for art history, I felt like I had stepped into a painting. This solo trip is exactly what I needed to recharge and find inspiration in new surroundings. I'm eager to share every moment of this cultural immersion with you!

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Café Mozart. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a traditional Austrian breakfast. I ordered a Melange, similar to a cappuccino, and a Semmel, a crusty bread roll, with butter and jam. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Although the cafe was established in 1824, I found that the interior felt ordinary. I know that this place has been in existence since 1824 but I think the decor needs a little fixing up. Maybe it was because it was already almost closing time that I didn't feel that much energy from such a well known place.

Fueled and ready, my first stop was Mirabell Palace. The palace itself is stunning, a Baroque masterpiece that exudes grandeur and history. I wandered through the Marble Hall, imagining the lavish parties and musical performances that once took place within its walls. It was breathtaking. I could picture Mozart performing with his father and sister in the Marble Hall. The Marble Hall is now used for civil wedding ceremonies and is regarded as the most beautiful registry office in the world. The Marble Hall is beautiful and the logistics of the concert were well done. The musicians were amazing and were great at telling the story of the music with their playing. Fantastic. Would do again and again. The Mirabell Palace is the most important of them and possibly the most beautiful of all.

The beauty of Salzburg lies not just in its monuments, but in the way its history intertwines with the present, creating a tapestry of experiences that resonate with the soul.

But the real highlight was the Mirabellgarten. As a floral designer, I was in paradise. The gardens were a riot of color, with meticulously arranged flower beds bursting with tulips, pansies, and forget-me-nots. The Pegasus Fountain sparkled in the sunlight, and the statues of Roman gods stood guard over the manicured lawns. I spent hours simply wandering, sketching, and taking photographs, completely lost in the beauty of it all. It felt like stepping into a fairytale. The flower beds and overall landscape design may not be the most elaborate or grand, the garden provides a tranquil oasis for visitors to wander and unwind. Unlike many other notable gardens that require an entry fee, the Mirabellgarten is completely free to access. This accessibility is a major plus, allowing guests to easily incorporate it into their Salzburg sightseeing without any additional cost. The views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress from the garden add to its allure, providing an excellent photo opportunity. The historical significance of the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, coupled with its aesthetic appeal, make it a must-visit spot in Salzburg.

Next on my list was Mozart's Residence. As someone who appreciates classical music, visiting the place where Mozart lived for many years was a must. The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into his life, showcasing original manuscripts, portraits, and instruments. It was humbling to stand in the rooms where he composed some of the world's most beloved music. I learned about his family, his struggles, and his genius, gaining a deeper understanding of the man behind the music. The apartment was so nice and clean. It was extremely roomy and had a great location. The room and location were great. We had our 2 teenage kids with us and they each got there own room. A short 10 min walk to the heart of old salzburg and the fortress. Wonderful facility. Easy to find and while not in the center of the old town, close enough to access everything and avoid the tourist traffic. Communication was great and...

For lunch, I ventured to Zum Zirkelwirt, a traditional Austrian restaurant known for its hearty fare. I ordered the Tafelspitz, boiled beef with horseradish sauce, accompanied by a Stiegl beer. The food was delicious and comforting, the perfect way to refuel after a busy morning. The restaurant was lively and the food was decent! Beer was great, too! The staff demonstrates a high level of quality at this restaurant. Spectacular service is something guests agree upon here. You are to be pleasantly impressed with attractive prices at Zum Zirkelwirt. The homey decor and charming atmosphere let visitors feel relaxed here.

In the afternoon, I couldn't resist a bit of souvenir shopping. I stopped by Haller Souvenir Shop, a charming store filled with traditional Austrian crafts and trinkets. I picked up a few Mozartkugeln, chocolate balls filled with marzipan, for Andreas and Sophie. I also found a delicate hand-painted ornament for our Christmas tree, a reminder of my solo adventure in Salzburg. The friendly staff are always on hand to share insights about the products and their origins, enriching your shopping experience. Haller Souvenir Shop is not just a store; it's a treasure trove of memories waiting to be discovered. The convenient opening hours make it easy for tourists to stop by during their exploration of Salzburg's iconic sights. Whether you're searching for a unique postcard, a handcrafted piece of jewelry, or delicious local treats, this shop is the perfect place to conclude your day of sightseeing with a special memento of your time in Salzburg.

As evening approached, I made my way to Restaurant Stiegl-Keller for dinner. Perched atop a hill, the restaurant offered stunning views of the city. I savored a traditional Salzburger Nockerl, a sweet soufflé, while watching the sunset over the rooftops of Salzburg. The energetic staff shows a high level of quality at this spot. The enjoyable service is something these restaurateurs care about. Here you will pay reasonable prices. At this restaurant, visitors can enjoy the pleasant ambiance and beautiful decor. The Stieglkeller enriches the gastronomy scene of the city and I can recommend the visit without restrictions, provided that freshly tapped beer and a solid inn cuisine fit into the concept.

Reflecting on my first day, I feel a sense of contentment and excitement for what's to come. Salzburg has already captured my heart with its beauty, history, and charm. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit Fortress Hohensalzburg, Salzburg Cathedral, and DomQuartier Salzburg. And perhaps, if time allows, I'll sneak in a visit to The Salzburg Whiskey Museum - Bar.
