A Day Away From The Crowds

Today was a day of quiet exploration, a gentle wandering through the less-trodden paths of Keukenhof and its surroundings. It’s funny, isn’t it? We often associate Keukenhof with the explosion of colors in spring, but there’s a certain understated beauty in experiencing it during the quieter months. It's a different kind of magic, one that whispers rather than shouts, and I was eager to listen.

My day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at Blooming Dutch. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and a strong cup of coffee. It’s a cozy little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I overheard a couple chatting about their plans to visit the flower fields in the spring. It reminded me of Andreas and Sophie, and how much they would have loved to see the tulips in full bloom. I made a mental note to plan a family trip during the tulip season next year.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Keukenhof Forest. I must admit, the idea of a forest walk in January didn't initially spark joy. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the serene beauty of the woods. The bare trees, dusted with a light frost, created a stark yet captivating landscape. I followed one of the designated walking trails, the crisp air filling my lungs with each step. I even tried to spot some of the local wildlife, but the woodpeckers, owls, and herons seemed to be hiding away from the cold. Still, the quiet solitude of the forest was a welcome escape from the bustling energy of the gardens themselves.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when we venture off the beaten path.

After my forest bathing, I decided to explore the area a bit more broadly using the Duin-en-Bollenstreek Knoopunt 42, a cycling route I had read about. Though I didn't have my bike, I figured I could still see some of the scenery by foot. Knoopunt, as I understand it, is a network of numbered junctions designed to guide cyclists through the most scenic routes in the region. I followed the signs, and while I certainly wasn't seeing fields of tulips, the quiet charm of the Dutch countryside was undeniable.

The route led me through quaint villages and past frozen canals, the winter light casting long shadows across the landscape. I paused for a moment to watch a group of ducks gliding across the ice, their reflections shimmering in the cold sunlight. It was a scene straight out of a Dutch painting, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

As lunchtime approached, I found myself near Hofboerderij, a restaurant I had read good things about. Nestled in a traditional Dutch farmhouse, it exuded warmth and hospitality. I stepped inside, eager to sample some local cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a crackling fireplace and the aroma of hearty dishes filling the air. I ordered a stamppot, a classic Dutch dish of mashed potatoes, vegetables, and sausage. It was the perfect comfort food for a cold winter day, and I savored every bite. Chatting with the server, I learned a bit about the history of the farmhouse and the surrounding area. It's these little interactions that make traveling solo so rewarding.

With renewed energy, I continued my exploration, following the Knoopunt route further into the countryside. I passed by charming windmills and picturesque farmhouses, each one telling a story of Dutch history and heritage. I even stumbled upon a small local market, where I bought some stroopwafels and bitterballen to enjoy later.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Jacoba’s Kitchen for dinner. Located within Keukenhof itself, it offered a convenient and delicious option for a late meal. I opted for the spinach burger and fries, a satisfying and comforting choice after a long day of walking. While enjoying my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences. It hadn't been the vibrant explosion of color that Keukenhof is known for, but it had been a day of quiet beauty, of discovering the hidden charms of the Dutch countryside.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Brouwerij Klein Duimpje, a local brewery I had heard about. It was a bit of a drive, but the promise of local craft beer was too tempting to resist. The brewery was small and unassuming, but the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I sampled a few of their beers, each one unique and flavorful. The Bollenstreek Ale was particularly enjoyable, a refreshing and hoppy brew that perfectly captured the spirit of the region. I chatted with the bartender, a friendly local who shared stories about the brewery and the surrounding area. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, connecting with the local culture and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

As I made my way back to my accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. It had been a day of quiet discovery, of finding beauty in the unexpected. And as I looked forward to my final day in Keukenhof, I knew that there were still many more hidden gems waiting to be uncovered.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Reuzenbol: 'Flora' and Viewpoint Kachelduin. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Wilhelmina Paviljoen, lunch at Restaurant De Vier Seizoenen, and dinner at Chique en Simpel. And, if I have time, I will visit Het Tussenstation Lisse for a drink.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what surprises my final day in Keukenhof holds. After all, isn't that what travel is all about? The thrill of the unknown, the joy of discovery, and the memories that last a lifetime.

I think I will bring Andreas and Sophie here in the Spring, so they can see the tulips in full bloom. It will be a great family trip.

Until tomorrow!
