Kyoto's Enchanting Embrace

Today was a day of embracing the serene beauty and rich cultural tapestry of Kyoto. From the tranquil temples to the vibrant parks and bustling shopping streets, every moment was a sensory delight. Hans and I set out to explore some of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks, and I'm excited to share our experiences with you.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten. The restaurant exuded the charm of an old townhouse, and the food was simply divine. I savored every bite of the traditional Kyoto cuisine, made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historic sites, but in the way it seamlessly blends tradition with the vibrant energy of modern life.

After breakfast, we made our way to Kodaiji Temple. Established in 1606 in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's greatest historical figures, by his wife Nene, the temple exuded a sense of peace and history. As we wandered through the temple grounds, I was struck by the beautiful gardens, the serene rock garden representing the vast ocean, and the impressive tsukiyama-style garden. The manicured landscapes and meticulously placed stones created an atmosphere of tranquility that was truly captivating. Nene's devotion was palpable in every corner, a testament to enduring love.

The main hall, rebuilt after a fire, was a sight to behold, surrounded by gardens designed by contemporary masters. We also explored the Kaizando, where Nene prayed for Hideyoshi, and the mausoleum behind the temple, richly decorated with Kodaiji Makie lacquerwork. It was fascinating to learn about the temple's history and the love story behind its creation. We even found time to explore the tea houses, one of which was designed by the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu. The air was thick with history, and I felt a deep connection to the past.

Next on our itinerary was Maruyama Park, a sprawling green space adjacent to Yasaka Shrine. As we entered the park, we were greeted by the sight of lush greenery and vibrant flowers. Although we just missed the peak cherry blossom season, the park was still alive with color and energy. We strolled along the winding paths, admiring the meticulously manicured gardens and the serene ponds. The park was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the beautiful weather and the peaceful atmosphere.

Maruyama Park is known for its stunning weeping cherry tree, which is illuminated at night, creating a magical spectacle. Although we visited during the day, I could imagine how enchanting it must be to see the tree lit up against the night sky. We found a quiet spot by a pond and simply sat, soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. It was a perfect moment of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. I took a moment to appreciate the artistry of Ueji VII, the landscape architect who designed the garden.

Leaving the park, we headed to Yasaka Shrine, one of Kyoto's most famous shrines. Founded over 1350 years ago, the shrine is located between the Gion and Higashiyama districts, making it a popular stop for tourists. As we approached the shrine, we were immediately struck by its vibrant colors and intricate architecture. The main hall, a combination of the honden (inner sanctuary) and haiden (offering hall), was particularly impressive.

The shrine was bustling with activity, as locals and tourists alike came to pay their respects and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the various buildings and shrines, each with its own unique history and significance. I lit a stick of incense and offered a prayer for peace and happiness. As we explored, we learned about the shrine's connection to the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous festivals, held every July. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a great god of storms and sea in Japanese mythology. The lanterns adorning the prayer hall added a touch of magic to the scene. I felt a sense of calm and reverence wash over me as we walked through the sacred grounds.

After our spiritual journey, it was time for some retail therapy at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This bustling pedestrian street is lined with shops selling everything from traditional crafts and souvenirs to the latest fashion trends and electronics. As we strolled along the street, we were bombarded with sights, sounds, and smells. The air was filled with the aroma of street food, the sounds of shopkeepers hawking their wares, and the chatter of locals and tourists.

I couldn't resist stopping at a few shops to browse the local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a beautiful silk scarf and a set of handcrafted chopsticks as gifts for friends back home. Hans, on the other hand, was more interested in the electronics shops, where he spent a good hour comparing the latest gadgets. We sampled some of the local street food, including takoyaki (octopus balls) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). The Shinkyogoku Shopping Street was a sensory overload, but it was also a lot of fun. It reminded me of the vibrant markets back in Ouro Preto, Brazil, where I grew up. The energy was infectious, and I found myself caught up in the excitement of the moment. We explored several shops selling local specialties such as Japanese sweets and pickles, and I even tried on a beautiful kimono. It was the perfect place to find unique souvenirs and experience the local culture.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at Oryori Menami. This charming restaurant is known for its Kyoto-style obanzai and homespun meals. The food was simple yet delicious, showcasing the fresh, seasonal ingredients of the region. I savored every bite of the flavorful dishes, which were a perfect blend of traditional and modern flavors. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, which added to the charm of the experience. The restaurant was started in 1939 by the grandmother of the current owner, and they have been serving yakitori and side dishes ever since. I particularly enjoyed the thick chilled soup with summer vegetables, which was perfect for the warm weather.

As evening approached, we prepared for a special dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. Known for serving premium Kobe beef, this restaurant promised an unforgettable culinary experience. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication. The restaurant had a modern, stylish decor, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. We were seated at a counter overlooking the teppanyaki grill, where we could watch the chef prepare our meal.

We opted for the Kobe beef sirloin, cooked to perfection by the skilled chef. Every bite was a melt-in-your-mouth sensation, bursting with flavor and tenderness. The chef also prepared a selection of fresh vegetables and side dishes, which complemented the beef perfectly. The meal was a true culinary masterpiece, and I savored every moment. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration and adventure. I learned that Mouriya Gion is the first location outside of Kobe and that they exclusively serve beef from the descendants of the Tajima cattle lineage. The chef cooked garlic chips, zucchini, and asparagus to accompany the beef, and we finished the meal with delicious garlic fried rice.

As we headed back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, Hans and I reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the serene temples to the vibrant parks and bustling shopping streets, Kyoto had captured our hearts and souls. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Chionin Temple, Shōsei-en Garden, and Gion Corner, and perhaps even enjoy a cocktail at the Kyoto Star Bar. It's hard to believe that our trip is nearing its end, but I'm determined to make the most of every moment.
