Immerse yourself in Florence's artistic heart, explore leather craftsmanship, and indulge in exquisite Tuscan cuisine. A day of pure delight!
Florence's Hidden Gems: A Day of Discovery
Today was a beautiful blend of art, history, and Florentine craftsmanship. I always find that Florence has a way of surprising you, even when you think you've seen it all. From exploring the grandeur of Medici chapels to savoring exquisite Tuscan flavors, today was a feast for the senses, and I'm excited to share it with you all.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Logò Ristorante. I opted for a simple yet satisfying cappuccino and a pastry, while Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried their Capasanta. He raved about the scallops with yellow pepper sauce, crispy cannoli with sweet potato mousse. Fuelled up, we were ready to dive into the day's adventures.
Our first stop was the Basilica di San Lorenzo. What struck me most was the unfinished façade; it’s rugged and unadorned. Inside, the Basilica felt serene and contemplative. Brunelleschi’s design, with its graceful arches and columns in grey Pietra Serena, created a calming atmosphere. The high, round windows allowed natural light to filter in, adding to the sense of peace. I learned that this basilica was the parish church of the Medici family and their burial place. The two bronze pulpits by Donatello were particularly remarkable, showcasing his final masterpieces. The Basilica is more than just a church; it's a complex with a museum, the Laurentian Library, and the Medici Chapels. It's amazing to think that such a place exists, filled with so much history.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, we ventured into the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. Of course, seeing Michelangelo's David in person was breathtaking. The sheer size and detail of the sculpture are awe-inspiring. But beyond David, I was captivated by the collection of Florentine paintings, especially those by artists like Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. Hans was particularly fascinated by the museum's collection of musical instruments. Did you know that the Accademia also houses a collection of rare musical instruments from the private collections of the Tuscan royal families? I could have easily spent hours wandering through the halls, soaking in the artistic brilliance.

After the Accademia, we made our way to the Cappelle Medicee, the Medici Chapels. These chapels are an opulent tribute to the Medici family. The Cappella dei Principi, with its imposing dome, is an incredible sight. Inside, the intricate marble and semi-precious stone decorations are stunning. We wandered through the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, which houses the tombs of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano. It’s amazing to think about the Medici family, their patronage, and the impact they had on Florence.

Following our immersion in art and history, we decided to indulge in some Florentine craftsmanship at the Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l.. This leather school is located in the cloisters of Santa Croce, and it’s a fascinating place to witness artisans at work. We watched as skilled craftsmen and women transformed raw leather into beautiful bags, belts, and other accessories. The aroma of leather filled the air, and the rhythmic sounds of cutting and stitching created a unique atmosphere. I was particularly impressed by the dedication and passion of the artisans, who are keeping this traditional craft alive. I ended up buying a beautiful leather journal as a souvenir, a reminder of the incredible craftsmanship I witnessed.

For lunch, we stopped at Il Vezzo, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. I decided to try their ribollita, a hearty bread and vegetable soup that was perfect for a chilly February day. Hans opted for the tagliata di manzo, sliced beef with rosemary and sea salt, which he declared was cooked to perfection. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the service was warm and friendly. It felt like a true taste of Florence.

As the day drew to a close, we had a truly unforgettable dining experience at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. The restaurant itself is chic and stylish. For dinner, I had the tasting menu, which was a culinary journey through modern Italian cuisine with innovative twists. Hans chose the cacio e pepe, a classic Roman dish elevated to new heights with the chef's creative touch. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxed. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with art, culture, and delicious food.

Tomorrow is our last day in Florence, and we plan to make the most of it! We’re going to visit the Museo Galileo to explore the history of science, followed by a stroll through Palazzo Antinori and the Museo di San Marco. For our final dinner, we’ve made reservations at Enoteca Pinchiorri, which I’ve heard is an exceptional culinary experience. And perhaps, we’ll end the night with a drink at The Old Stove Irish Pub.
As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Florence. Each day here has been a new adventure, a chance to learn, explore, and connect with the rich history and artistic heritage of this incredible city. I'm already looking forward to sharing our final day's adventures with you all!
It's amazing how Florence manages to blend history, art, and culinary delights into one unforgettable experience. Even though I forgot my umbrella, the sun shone brightly on our adventures, and the memories we made today will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe next time we're here, we'll finally see that Michelangelo façade on the Basilica di San Lorenzo!
Until tomorrow,
Maria
