Florentine Discoveries: Art, Panoramas, and Secret Bars

Today was a beautiful blend of history, art, and stunning views, topped off with a touch of mystery. Florence continues to enchant me, and I'm excited to share the highlights of our day with you all. From exploring hallowed basilicas to soaking in panoramic vistas and discovering hidden cocktail dens, Florence truly offers something for everyone.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Cappelle Medicee Restorante. The reviews I had read online were spot-on; the atmosphere was lovely, and the food was delicious. Fuelled up, Hans and I made our way to the Basilica di Santa Croce. I've always been fascinated by the final resting places of historical figures, and Santa Croce did not disappoint. To stand in the presence of Michelangelo's tomb, as well as those of Galileo and Machiavelli, was a humbling experience. The sheer scale of the basilica is breathtaking, and the intricate details of the architecture and artwork kept us captivated for hours. I learned that the Basilica even offers a kit for children with activities themed around the four elements – what a brilliant way to engage young minds with art and history! Unfortunately, the Bardi Chapel, with Giotto's frescoes, is currently undergoing restoration, so we couldn't see it, but it gives us a reason to return, doesn't it?

Florence is not just a city; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.

After immersing ourselves in the artistic treasures of Santa Croce, we decided to embrace the brisk February air and make our way to Piazzale Michelangelo. The walk itself was invigorating, and as we ascended, the city unfolded before us in all its glory. The panoramic view from the top was simply mesmerizing. Even though it's February, and a bit chilly, the view was worth it. The Duomo stood proudly against the skyline, and the Arno River snaked its way through the heart of Florence. It was the perfect spot to capture some photos and simply soak in the beauty of this remarkable city. I can only imagine how stunning it must be during sunset, with the sky ablaze with color.

From Piazzale Michelangelo, we ventured to Giardino Bardini. This 17th-century Renaissance garden offered another perspective of Florence, with beautifully manicured landscapes and hidden pathways. Although some areas were a bit steep, the views from the terraces were well worth the effort. I read that the garden is not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility due to the hills, but it was still a beautiful place to spend some time. The wisteria tunnel must be absolutely magical in the spring! It was a tranquil escape from the bustling city, and I enjoyed wandering through the English garden with its evergreen trees and fountains. It's fascinating how the Bardini Garden connects seven centuries of Florentine history and offers stunning views of the city, monuments, and surrounding hills.

As the afternoon drew to a close, our stomachs started to rumble, so we headed to Osteria Antica Casa Torre for lunch. The osteria was charming, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I opted for a pasta dish with truffle, and Hans chose a traditional Florentine steak. Both were absolutely delicious! It's always a pleasure to discover these little gems tucked away in the city's historic center. The staff was friendly, and the service was spectacular. I read some reviews online beforehand, and it certainly lived up to the hype.

With the sun setting, we decided to embrace Florence's nightlife and seek out a hidden gem – Rasputin, a speakeasy-style bar. Finding it was an adventure in itself! Tucked away behind an unmarked door, we rang the doorbell and were transported to an intimate, 1920s-style setting. The bartenders were true mixologists, crafting expertly balanced cocktails with a focus on whiskey. It felt like stepping back in time, and the atmosphere was both sophisticated and intriguing. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery. Apparently, it's known for being a bit strict, but we didn't have any issues. I enjoyed a Delicious Little Devil cocktail, while Hans opted for a Manhattan with a twist of absinthe. What a memorable experience!

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Florence's beauty and charm. Each day here seems to reveal new layers of history, art, and culture. We had dinner at Cantinetta delle Terme. The restaurant is located near the Church of Santa Trinita. I enjoyed the seafood dishes on the menu. I chose spaghetti alla chitarra ai frutti di mare, and Hans had paccheri al pesto di pistacchio, pomodori secchi e ricciola. For dessert, we shared some tiramisu.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, explore the Mercato del Porcellino, and soak in the atmosphere of Piazza della Signoria. I'm also looking forward to some leather shopping at Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. Until then, arrivederci from Florence!

P.S. I almost forgot! In my rush to pack, I completely forgot my umbrella! Thankfully, the weather has been relatively kind, but I'll definitely need to pick one up before the week is out. I think I'll check out the shops near the Mercato del Porcellino tomorrow, perhaps I can find one there.

On a side note, February in Florence seems to be a busy month with several events including the Grand Carnival Parade in Florence’s historic center scheduled for February 9 and 15. For lovers of food, Taste, a three-day event dedicated to a high-quality food lifestyle takes place from February 8-10 at Fortezza da Basso. For book lovers, Testo – Come si diventa un libro, the annual event for readers and publishing enthusiasts takes place from February 28 to March 2 at Stazione Leopolda. And for dance enthusiasts, Danzainfiera takes place February 21-23 at Fortezza da Basso.
