Exploring the Cultural Wonders of Chiang Mai
Day 3: A Spiritual Sunday: Temples, Gardens, and Hill Tribe Culture in Chiang Mai
Explore Chiang Mai's spiritual side with Doi Suthep, Bhubing Palace, and Hmong Doi Pui Village. A day of beauty, culture, and reflection.
A Day Above the Clouds
Today was a day of breathtaking views, vibrant culture, and serene reflection high above Chiang Mai. Leaving the bustle of the city behind, I embarked on a journey to explore the mountainous landscapes and cultural treasures that define this region. It was a day filled with golden temples, fragrant gardens, and the warm smiles of the local people – a perfect blend of spirituality and natural beauty. And, as always, I made sure to sample some of the local cuisine along the way!
My day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Goodsouls Kitchen - Vegan Restaurant. I'd heard so many wonderful things about this place, and it certainly lived up to the hype. I opted for the sesame pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I overheard some other travellers raving about the Khao Soi, a Northern Thai classic, so I'll definitely need to try that next time. I felt great knowing I was starting my day with a healthy and sustainable meal.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed towards Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The drive up the winding mountain road was an adventure in itself, with stunning vistas unfolding at every turn. The air grew cooler and crisper as I ascended, a welcome change from the city's warmth. I even had to put on the sweater I brought, which reminded me of hiking in the Odenwald forest back home.

My first stop was Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the iconic temple perched high on the mountain. The climb up the Naga-lined staircase was a bit of a workout, but the reward was more than worth it. The temple complex glittered in the sunlight, its golden chedi a beacon of faith and beauty. I wandered through the courtyards, admiring the intricate architecture and the countless Buddha images. The panoramic views of Chiang Mai stretching out below were simply mesmerizing. It was so peaceful and serene, a perfect place for quiet contemplation. I even lit a candle and made a small offering, feeling a sense of connection to the spiritual heart of Thailand.
The journey to enlightenment often begins with a single step, a climb towards the light.
Next on my itinerary was Bhubing Palace, the winter residence of the Thai Royal Family. Unfortunately, as I discovered upon arrival, the palace itself was closed to the public, as the Royal Family typically resides there between January and March. However, the meticulously landscaped gardens were still open, and I decided to take a stroll through them. The cool mountain air was invigorating, and the vibrant colors of the flowers were a feast for the eyes. I wandered through the rose garden, admiring the countless varieties in full bloom. It was a tranquil oasis, a world away from the bustling city below. Although I couldn’t see the palace buildings, the gardens alone were worth the visit, offering a glimpse into the refined elegance of Thai royalty.

After immersing myself in the manicured beauty of Bhubing Palace, I ventured further into the mountains to Hmong Doi Pui Village. This unique settlement offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives and traditions of the Hmong people, an ethnic minority group with a rich cultural heritage. The village itself was a vibrant tapestry of colorful textiles, handcrafted souvenirs, and bustling market stalls. I wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the intricate embroidery and the skill of the local artisans. I even purchased a small, hand-woven bag as a memento of my visit. The people were warm and welcoming, eager to share their culture with visitors. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the diversity and resilience of the human spirit. The weather was pleasant, with temperatures hovering around 20-23 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable to explore the village.

For lunch, I decided to try THE HOUSE by Ginger. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old colonial mansion, creating a charming and stylish atmosphere. I ordered the Khao Soi, a Northern Thai noodle curry, which was absolutely delicious. The flavors were complex and aromatic, a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory. I also enjoyed a refreshing mango smoothie, which was the perfect complement to the rich and flavorful curry. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the attentive service. It's no wonder this place is a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant.

After lunch, I did some shopping at Loyfar shop One Nimman. I was captivated by the intricate designs and the artistry of the Loyfar pewterware. I picked up a small candle holder shaped like an elephant, a perfect reminder of my time in Thailand. The shop itself was beautiful, showcasing the brand's commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to The Riverside Bar & Restaurant for dinner. I secured a table with a view of the Mae Ping River, and settled in to enjoy the ambiance. The restaurant had a lively and festive atmosphere, with live music adding to the charm. I ordered a selection of Thai dishes, including green curry and Pad Thai, which were all flavorful and well-prepared. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

To cap off the evening, I headed to Roots Rock Reggae Chaingmai, a bar known for its laid-back atmosphere and live music. I wasn't disappointed. The band was fantastic, playing a mix of reggae classics and original tunes. The crowd was friendly and welcoming, and I quickly struck up a conversation with some fellow travelers. The drinks were strong and the vibe was infectious. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak up the energy of Chiang Mai's nightlife. I even tried a local beer, which was surprisingly good.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Chiang Mai has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us of the beauty and interconnectedness of the world. From the golden temples to the fragrant gardens to the warm smiles of the local people, every moment has been a gift. And tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Chiang Mai's cultural treasures, including Wat Phra That Doi Kham and Royal Park Rajapruek. I can’t wait to see what new adventures await!
I am also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Tong Tem Toh. I've heard great things about their Northern Thai dishes, and I'm eager to sample some authentic flavors. Perhaps I'll even pick up some souvenirs at Warorot Market (Kad Luang) before enjoying a nightcap at Lost Hut.
Until tomorrow!
