Exploring Shirakawa-go's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of unexpected discoveries and delightful immersions into the heart of Shirakawa-go. From the serene beauty of the Nature Forest to the artistic expressions at the Jin Homura Art Museum, and the exquisite local cuisine, every moment felt like uncovering a new layer of this enchanting village. As someone who appreciates both art and the tranquility of nature, I was excited to see what today would bring.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yukinko. This charming spot, run by two sisters who grew up in Shirakawa, is known for its authentic Japanese dishes. I opted for a traditional rice bowl, which was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The sisters were incredibly welcoming, and we chatted a bit about the village and its history. It’s these personal touches that make traveling so rewarding. It reminded me of the warmth I feel when I cook Brazilian dishes with local German ingredients back in Heidelberg.

First on the agenda was the Jin Homura Art Museum. Nestled beside the village parking lot, the museum's gassho-style architecture immediately caught my eye. I learned that Jin Homura, an artist known for his vivid colors and exploration of societal themes, donated his works and the building to the village after using it as a studio for about 20 years. The contrast between the contemporary art and the traditional architecture was striking, creating a unique and thought-provoking experience. Homura's dynamic and multi-dimensional style, inspired by the gassho-zukuri house itself, added another layer of appreciation to the visit. As a geriatric nurse, I often see how art can profoundly impact people's lives, providing comfort and stimulation, and Homura’s work certainly resonated with me.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, I ventured into the Nature Forest, eager to immerse myself in the lush greenery surrounding Shirakawa-go. The forest offered a peaceful escape, with trails winding through the verdant landscape. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of nature. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the forest, taking in the beauty of the beech and oak trees. The sunlight filtering through the leaves created a magical atmosphere. Shirakawa-go is truly blessed with nature, especially during the summer months when the village is swathed in greens. It's easy to see why the locals are so dedicated to preserving this natural environment; their efforts ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy its beauty for years to come.
For lunch, I decided to try Arai, a cozy and homey restaurant near the bus station. This place is known for its Hida beef, and I was eager to taste it. I opted for the Hida beef set, which included tender and juicy beef cooked on a hot plate. The meal was simple yet incredibly satisfying, and the kind service from the older lady managing the restaurant added to the experience. The tofu and side dishes complemented the beef perfectly, making for a well-rounded and delicious lunch. It was a delightful contrast to some of the more elaborate meals I've had on this trip, proving that sometimes the simplest dishes are the most memorable.

In the evening, I indulged in a delightful dinner at Nomura, a popular soba noodle restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the menu offered a variety of vegetarian options, which I appreciated. I chose the handmade soba, which was delicious and well-priced. The owners were incredibly friendly, and it was clear that they took pride in their food. The classic cold soba with daikon was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, especially with the complimentary iced tea. It reminded me of the simple, comforting meals I enjoy back in Heidelberg with Hans.

To cap off the day, I visited Hidaji, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of local sake, chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. The bar had a rustic charm that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Shirakawa-go. The warm hospitality made me feel right at home, even though I was thousands of miles away from Heidelberg.

As I head back to my ryokan, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. Shirakawa-go has a way of captivating you with its beauty and charm. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hida Takayama Museum of Art and the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum. I’m also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Hiiragi for breakfast, Masuzono Bunsuke for lunch, and Morizen for dinner. Plus, I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Ebisu-ya. As I drift off to sleep, I’m already excited for what tomorrow will bring. I am also reminded that I need to buy sunscreen and a portable phone charger since I forgot to pack them.
Tonight, I’m left with a profound sense of connection to this special place. The combination of art, nature, and culinary delights has created memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. It reinforces my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about immersing yourself in the culture and connecting with the people who call it home. I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all.
