A Day of Discovery in Shirakawa-go

Today was a delightful immersion into the local culture and flavors of Shirakawa-go. From bustling morning markets to serene traditional houses and sweet pudding, every moment was a sensory experience. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you simply wander with an open heart and a curious mind.

My day began early, fueled by the excitement of exploring more of Shirakawa-go. After a simple yet satisfying breakfast at Gassho, I decided to wander towards Takayama to experience the local morning market. Although not located directly in Shirakawa-go, I wanted to experience the vibrant atmosphere of the Jinya-mae Morning Markets, located in Takayama, which is about an hour away from Shirakawa-go. I had read about the market, and it sounded like the perfect place to soak in the local culture.

The journey to Takayama was an adventure in itself. The bus wound through picturesque landscapes, offering stunning views of the Japanese Alps. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the serene beauty of the countryside. Even though I forgot my sunscreen, the cool morning air was refreshing.

Arriving at the Jinya-mae Morning Markets, I was immediately enveloped in a lively atmosphere. Stalls lined the streets, brimming with fresh produce, colorful flowers, and local crafts. The vendors, with their warm smiles and welcoming gestures, were eager to share their stories and products. I wandered through the market, taking in the sights and sounds. I sampled some local pickles, which had a unique, tangy flavor, and admired the intricate details of handmade wooden carvings. It was a delightful experience, and I couldn't resist buying a small bouquet of vibrant flowers to brighten up my ryokan room.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new moments.

Back in Shirakawa-go, with the sun climbing higher, I set off to explore the Yoshijima Traditional House. This beautifully preserved house offered a glimpse into the life of a wealthy merchant family from the early 20th century. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the space. The wooden architecture, with its intricate details and sturdy beams, exuded a sense of timeless elegance. I wandered through the rooms, admiring the traditional tatami mats, shoji screens, and the carefully arranged displays of household items.

The house was built in 1907 by a master carpenter and served as both a residence and a sake-making facility for the Yoshijima family. The most spectacular feature of the house is the earthen floor stairwell, where shiny black beams and bunches of wood support thick main pillars and intersect with each other in a three-dimensional structure that looks like a work of art. I spent a quiet moment in the garden, listening to the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. It was a peaceful oasis, a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

For lunch, I ventured to Zensuke, a local eatery known for its delicious Hida beef skewers and Gohei mochi. The aroma of grilled meat wafted through the air, enticing my senses. I ordered a Hida beef skewer, and it was cooked to perfection. The beef was tender and juicy, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture that left me craving more. The Gohei mochi, a local specialty made from pounded rice and coated in a sweet and savory miso glaze, was also a treat. The combination of flavors was unique and satisfying.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge my sweet tooth at Shirakawago Purin no Ie, a charming pudding house that I had heard so much about. The shop itself was adorable, resembling one of the traditional gassho-style houses. There was a short queue, but it moved quickly, and soon I found myself face-to-face with a dazzling array of pudding flavors. I finally settled on the classic custard pudding and a matcha-flavored one, intrigued by the unique Japanese twist. The pudding was served in a cute glass jar, which I happily took home as a souvenir.

Finding a quiet spot by the river, I savored each spoonful of the creamy pudding. The custard flavor was rich and decadent, while the matcha added a subtle, earthy note. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. As I sat there, watching the gentle flow of the river and the sunlight filtering through the trees, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Shirakawa-go.

Tonight, I'll be having dinner at Yamamotoya, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I am looking forward to trying some local specialties and savoring the flavors of the region.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Museum Hida and the Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theater, hoping to delve deeper into the art and history of this region. I might even treat myself to a drink at Tenkara, Shirakawa, a local bar that sounds like a cozy spot to unwind.

As the sun sets over Shirakawa-go, I reflect on the day's adventures. It's moments like these, where I can immerse myself in the local culture and connect with the beauty of the world, that make travel so rewarding. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Though Hans isn’t here with me on this solo adventure, I know he would have loved wandering the markets and trying all the local treats. I’m already planning our return trip, so we can experience this magical place together. Maybe next time, we can even try staying in one of the traditional gassho-style houses. That would truly be an unforgettable experience.
