Day 4: Discovering the Soul of Shirakawa-go

Today was a day of quiet reflection and scenic exploration in the heart of Shirakawa-go. I set out to discover some of the village's hidden gems, blending spiritual encounters with the natural beauty that surrounds this UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day when you truly immerse yourself in the experience.

My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Hakusuien. The restaurant is located in a charming old house with a steep rafter roof. It was a delightful way to start the day. The set meal included grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and an assortment of local pickles. The simple, warm flavors were a perfect introduction to the day's adventures. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic cuisine.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Hatotani Hachiman Shrine. The journey there was an experience in itself. I took a local bus and then walked the remaining 800 meters, following signs that led me deeper into the serene countryside. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and protector of Japan, and the setting was breathtaking, surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery.

The beauty of Shirakawa-go lies not just in its scenery, but in the preservation of its traditions and the warmth of its people.

The shrine exuded a sense of tranquility that was immediately calming. I took my time to wander around, admiring the traditional architecture and the ancient cedar tree that stands within the grounds. It's designated as a natural monument by the village. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of nature. I could almost feel the spiritual significance of the place, a reminder of the harmony between nature and spirituality that is central to Japanese culture.

Next on my itinerary was the Wooden Walkway. From the shrine, I headed back towards the center of Shirakawa-go and followed the marked paths towards the river. The Wooden Walkway is easily accessible from the Shirakawa-go Information Center. The walk itself was pleasant, taking me through charming village streets and alongside the picturesque river.

The Wooden Walkway offered stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and the traditional gassho-zukuri houses. As I strolled along the path, I took in the intricate details of the architecture and the serene atmosphere of the village. It was designed for leisurely walks, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the tranquil environment.

For lunch, I chose Tanaka-ya, a soba noodle shop known for its freshly made soba noodles and local ingredients. This restaurant stands out as a culinary gem. I ordered a bowl of chilled soba served with a dipping sauce. The noodles had a delicate texture and a nutty flavor, a true taste of the region's agricultural heritage. The serene environment and the rustic charm of the surrounding architecture made it a memorable experience.

In the evening, I decided to try Gassho for dinner. Luckily, I managed to secure a table. The restaurant is housed in one of the iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses, and the ambiance was simply magical. I savored local cuisine, including Hida beef and homegrown rice. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

After dinner, I decided to check out the Gassho bar, which shares the same name as the restaurant. It was a cozy spot where I could unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I enjoyed a local sake, chatting with some of the other patrons and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. It was a great way to experience the nightlife in Shirakawa-go, which offers a unique blend of modern and traditional experiences.

As I walked back to my ryokan, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Shirakawa-go had revealed its soul to me, offering moments of spiritual reflection, scenic beauty, and culinary delight. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit the Water Lily Pond and Myozenji Temple. I'm also excited to try the local cuisine at Zensuke for breakfast, Soba dojo Restaurant for lunch, and Shiawaseya Kichibei for dinner. I might even do some shopping at Shin ge do.

Before drifting off to sleep, I realized I still needed a portable phone charger. I added it to my list of essentials to buy. I’m also thinking of sending Hans some pictures of the gassho-zukuri houses. I know he’d appreciate the architecture.

Good night from Shirakawa-go. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
