A Day of Reflection and Rejuvenation
Today was a journey of contrasts, a blend of spiritual reflection and invigorating nature. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to immerse myself fully in each experience, to linger where my heart feels most at peace, and to discover hidden gems along the way. It was a day to recharge my soul and appreciate the simple beauty that Hue has to offer.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe on Thu Wheels. I enjoyed a delicious bowl of *bún bò Huế*, a local specialty, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's adventures. I must admit, starting the day with such a flavorful explosion really sets the tone for exploration! I savored every bite, knowing that today was going to be something special. I made sure to pack my camera, comfortable shoes, and my trusty notebook – ready to capture every moment. I was particularly excited to visit Chùa Từ Hiếu, a temple known for its serene atmosphere and historical significance. I'd read so much about it and seen countless pictures, but I knew experiencing it in person would be something else entirely.
My first stop was Chùa Từ Hiếu, a temple nestled away in a tranquil pine forest. The temple is located a short distance from the city center, about 5km away. As I walked through the entrance, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace that permeated the air. The gentle rustling of the trees, the soft chanting of monks, and the quiet footsteps of other visitors created a symphony of serenity. The temple’s history is fascinating; it was originally built as a hermitage in 1843 by a monk who dedicated himself to caring for his ailing mother. This act of filial piety is deeply ingrained in the temple’s identity, making it a place of reverence and respect.
The architecture of Chùa Từ Hiếu is beautifully understated, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The temple follows the traditional three-section structure, with a hall for Buddha worship at the front and the Quảng Hiếu Đường at the rear. The intricate carvings and detailing on the buildings, while subtle, spoke volumes about the craftsmanship and dedication of those who built it. I wandered through the temple grounds, taking in the serene atmosphere. I found myself drawn to the lotus pond, where colorful fish swam lazily beneath the water lilies. I sat there for a while, simply observing and letting the tranquility wash over me.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
One of the most unique aspects of Chùa Từ Hiếu is its connection to the Nguyễn Dynasty’s eunuchs. In the past, many retired eunuchs chose this temple as a place of rest and spiritual retreat. There’s even a separate cemetery within the temple grounds where they are buried. I paid my respects at their tombs, reflecting on their lives and the unique role they played in Vietnamese history. It was a poignant reminder of the diverse stories that make up the rich tapestry of this country’s past. I learned that the temple holds a ceremony every November to honor these eunuchs.
Leaving Chùa Từ Hiếu, I felt a sense of calm and rejuvenation. It was a truly special place, steeped in history and radiating peace. I made a mental note to bring Hans here someday; I know he would appreciate its tranquility and historical significance just as much as I did. I grabbed a quick and delicious lunch at ECO restaurant - coffee. I tried a local vegetarian dish, which was both healthy and satisfying. I had to try and save some space, as I knew what was coming later!
Next on my itinerary was Elephant Springs, a natural water park located about an hour's drive from Hue. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush countryside and offering glimpses of rural Vietnamese life. I rented a motorbike for the day, which gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace. As I approached Elephant Springs, I could hear the sound of rushing water and excited chatter – a welcome change from the serene silence of the temple. Elephant Springs, also known as *Suối Voi* in Vietnamese, is a series of natural pools and waterfalls nestled in the mountains. The name comes from a large rock formation that resembles an elephant, a whimsical touch that adds to the area’s charm. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, especially during the warmer months.

I paid the entrance fee and made my way down to the main pool. The water was crystal clear and refreshingly cool – a welcome respite from the October heat. I immediately jumped in, joining the throngs of people splashing and swimming. The main pool is quite large, with plenty of space to spread out. There are also several smaller pools and waterfalls to explore, each offering its own unique charm. I spent the afternoon swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of the surroundings. I even tried my hand at jumping off some of the smaller rocks, much to the amusement of the local kids. I felt like a child again, carefree and full of energy. The best time to visit Elephant Springs is between January and September.
As the sun began to set, I reluctantly packed up my things and started the drive back to Hue. I stopped along the way to capture some photos of the stunning scenery, the golden light casting a magical glow over the landscape. I arrived back in Hue feeling tired but incredibly content. I took some time to freshen up at the Alba Spa Hotel before heading out for dinner. For dinner, I decided to try Bistro La Carambole, a restaurant known for its fusion of Vietnamese and French cuisine. I ordered the *bò lúc lắc*, a classic Vietnamese dish of stir-fried beef with bell peppers and onions, and it was absolutely divine. The perfect ending to a perfect day.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out The Chàm Craft Beer and Whisky, a bar that had been recommended to me by several locals. I am not usually a beer person, but I thought I would give it a try. The bar had a cozy, Brooklyn-meets-Vietnamese vibe, with a wide selection of local craft beers and whiskies. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, offering recommendations based on my preferences. I ended up trying a Vietnamese craft beer, and I was pleasantly surprised by its unique flavor. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The Chàm Craft Beer and Whisky often hosts live music and tasting sessions.
