A Day of Reflection and Culinary Delights in Hue

Today was a day of deep reflection and sensory indulgence here in Hue. It’s amazing how much a change of scenery can do for the soul. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Heidelberg for this solo adventure has been incredibly rewarding, offering moments of peace and discovery I didn't know I needed. Today was all about finding serenity in unexpected places and savoring the flavors of this ancient city.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at the Starlight Lounge and Restaurant. The morning view was absolutely breathtaking, the city slowly waking up beneath a blanket of soft light. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee and a bowl of *Bún bò Huế*, a spicy beef noodle soup that’s a local specialty. It was the perfect way to kickstart a day dedicated to exploring Hue’s spiritual side. Sipping the strong coffee, I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish back home for Hans – though I doubt I could ever truly capture the authentic flavors of Vietnam in my little Heidelberg kitchen.

After breakfast, I set out to visit the Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda. The ride there was an adventure in itself, passing through lush greenery and small villages. The pagoda is nestled amidst rolling hills, offering a sense of tranquility from the moment you arrive. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city bustle. As I walked through the temple grounds, I was struck by the sense of peace that permeated the air. The architecture was beautiful, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us inward.

I spent a good hour wandering around, taking in the sights and sounds. Monks were quietly tending to the gardens, and the gentle chanting created a soothing atmosphere. I even took a moment to meditate, something I haven’t done properly since leaving Ouro Preto. It was a beautiful reminder of the simple life and the importance of inner peace. I found myself reflecting on my work as a geriatric nurse, and how important it is to bring moments of joy and peace to those in their twilight years. Perhaps I could bring some of this tranquility back with me to Heidelberg, sharing it with my patients and colleagues.

Next on the itinerary was a visit to Luu Khiem Lake. This serene lake is part of the Tu Duc Tomb complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tomb itself is a sprawling complex of pavilions, temples, and courtyards, all set amidst lush gardens and tranquil waterways. I strolled along the lake's edge, enjoying the reflection of the surrounding trees and buildings on the water's surface. It was a truly picturesque scene, and I couldn’t resist taking dozens of photos. I imagined Emperor Tu Duc himself seeking solace here, surrounded by beauty and serenity.

For lunch, I decided to try the Tropical Garden Restaurant. It was a delightful experience, dining amidst lush greenery and the gentle sounds of nature. I ordered *Banh Khoai*, a crispy crepe filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts, served with a tangy dipping sauce. It was absolutely delicious, and the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring. The restaurant had a lovely, relaxed vibe, and I found myself chatting with a couple of fellow travelers, sharing stories and travel tips. It’s moments like these that make solo travel so special – the unexpected connections and the shared experiences.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Vietnam Gifts. I wanted to find some souvenirs to take back home to Hans and my friends in Heidelberg. I picked up a few *nón lá* (conical hats), some silk scarves, and a bag of *mè xửng* (sesame candy). I also found some beautiful hand-painted lacquerware, perfect for adding a touch of Vietnamese artistry to our home. I made sure to get some *cajeput oil* as well, knowing how much my patients would appreciate its soothing properties. I even managed to find a small, intricately carved wooden boat, a perfect reminder of my time on the Perfume River. I chuckled to myself, imagining Hans’s reaction to my overflowing suitcase – he always teases me about my souvenir addiction.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to Nhà hàng Bánh Gánh for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Hue dishes, served in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I opted for a selection of *bánh bèo*, *bánh nậm*, and *bánh lọc* – small, savory rice cakes that are a local specialty. They were served with a flavorful dipping sauce and fresh herbs, a true explosion of flavors in my mouth. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and lively atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. From the spiritual serenity of the Huyen Khong Son Thuong Pagoda to the bustling energy of the local market, Hue had truly captured my heart. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and to connect with its rich culture and history. I thought about how lucky I am to be able to travel and experience new things, and I made a promise to myself to continue seeking out adventures, both big and small, throughout my life.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Thien An Monastery and take a stroll down Nguyen Dinh Chieu Walking Street. I am also hoping to check out Le Gouverneur Bar in the evening. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and immersion in this amazing city. Good night from Hue!
