Whispers of History in Meknes

Today, Hans and I embarked on a captivating journey through Meknes, a city where history resonates in every corner. As an archivist, I always feel a special connection to places like this, where the past is not just remembered but actively lived. Today was no exception, filled with exploration, culinary delights, and the simple joys of experiencing a new culture.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Baraka. The cozy atmosphere and delicious Moroccan tea set the perfect tone for our adventures. Fuelled up, we headed towards our first destination: Bassin Souani.

Bassin Souani is an enormous water basin built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail to supply water to the royal palace and gardens. As we approached, the sheer scale of the basin was breathtaking. It stretches out impressively, reflecting the clear sky and surrounding greenery. The structure itself is a testament to the ingenuity of the past, a reminder of how essential water management was – and still is – in this region.

We strolled along the edge, enjoying the tranquility of the scene. The gentle sound of water and the rustling leaves created a peaceful atmosphere, a welcome escape from the bustling city. I could imagine boats and canoes once floating here, adding to the vibrancy of the area. Hans, ever the engineer at heart, was fascinated by the mechanics of the ancient water system, discussing the interconnected pipes and norias that once drew water from underground sources.

To walk through Bassin Souani is to step back in time, connecting with the ingenuity and vision of a bygone era.

After soaking in the serene ambiance of Bassin Souani, we made our way to Khemis Gate. This gate, also known as Bab el-Khemis, is a historical city gate located in the west of the old city of Meknes. Built by Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, it served as the main entrance to the city of gardens.

Approaching the gate, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The intricate carvings and imposing structure spoke volumes about the city's rich history and cultural significance. According to historical records, the gate was the only remaining trace of the gardens, which once housed viziers and high-ranking officials. The area was unfortunately destroyed in 1729 by Moulay Abdellah, but the gate remains as a proud testament to the past.

Hans and I walked through the gate, imagining the bustling activity that once filled this space. The inscriptions on the frontispiece added to the allure, proudly stating, I am the fortunate gate, as proud as the full moon in the sky. My imposing and cheerful structure tells of the glory of Sultan Moulay Ismail. He built me in the auspicious year of 1098. Exploring the area around the gate, we discovered remnants of the old city walls and fortifications.

For lunch, we decided to try Grillade Albanna, a local spot known for its delicious kefta. The aroma of grilled meats filled the air as we approached, making our mouths water in anticipation. We ordered a platter of kefta, served with warm bread and a side of fresh salad. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of spices and herbs that danced on our taste buds.

As we savored each bite, we watched the locals going about their day, chatting and laughing. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to connect with the heart and soul of Meknes. The owner of the restaurant was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the city and its history. He even gave us a few tips on hidden gems to explore, adding a personal touch to our culinary adventure.

In the late afternoon, we sought out Cafe machhour, a local bar known for its authentic Moroccan ambiance. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our day of exploration. The cafe was filled with locals, sipping on mint tea and playing traditional music. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we quickly felt at ease.

Hans and I ordered mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality. The sweet, fragrant tea was the perfect pick-me-up after a long day of walking. We sat back, listening to the music and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. It was a moment of pure joy, a reminder of why we love to travel and experience new cultures.

For dinner, we chose Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of Moroccan specialties. We decided to try the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, filled with tender meat and vegetables. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Meknes.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible experiences we had shared. From the grandeur of Bassin Souani to the charm of Khemis Gate, Meknes had captivated us with its rich history and vibrant culture. The delicious meals and warm hospitality had added an extra layer of delight to our adventure.

Tomorrow, on our final day in the Moulay Idriss region, we plan to visit Dar Moulay Idriss and DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN, hoping to soak in a little more of the local culture before we head back to Berlin. And perhaps, if time allows, a bit of shopping at The Anou Cooperative.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took one last stroll through the city. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, and the streets were alive with activity. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a memory that we would cherish for years to come. I am so grateful for these experiences and for the opportunity to share them with Hans. As we prepare to leave this enchanting region, I know that a part of us will always remain here, amidst the ancient echoes and modern delights of Morocco.
