Day 1: First Impressions of Moulay Idriss: A Journey Through Morocco's Holiest City
Join Maria and Hans as they explore the sacred streets of Moulay Idriss, discovering hidden gems and cultural treasures in Morocco.
A Sacred Start to Our Moroccan Adventure
Our Moroccan adventure has officially begun! After a smooth flight from Berlin to Casablanca and a scenic train and taxi ride, Hans and I arrived in Moulay Idriss Downtown, a town that immediately captivated us with its serene atmosphere and stunning views. As an archivist with a love for history, I was eager to immerse myself in this holy city, known for its rich cultural heritage and the tomb of Moulay Idriss I. September is a lovely time to visit, with warm days and pleasant evenings, perfect for exploring the narrow streets and soaking in the local atmosphere.

Our first stop was the SCORPION HOUSE for breakfast. What a delightful introduction to Moroccan hospitality! Perched high on a hillside, the views were simply breathtaking, stretching for kilometers across the valley. The climb up the narrow, winding streets, which were more like staircases, was worth every step. The breakfast was a delicious array of Moroccan specialties, each bite a burst of flavor. I learned that the owner, Mike Richardson, also runs the acclaimed Café Clock in Fez. It’s fascinating how this place got its name; apparently, scorpions are common in the scrubland around Moulay Idriss.

After breakfast, we ventured into Moulay Idriss Downtown. The whitewashed buildings cascading down the hillsides created a mesmerizing scene. The town felt like a maze, with narrow alleyways leading to hidden squares and bustling souks. We stumbled upon The Anou Cooperative, a shop that supports local artisans, particularly women. I was impressed by their commitment to fair trade and sustainable practices. We purchased a beautiful handwoven rug, knowing that our contribution would directly benefit the artisan who crafted it.

The beauty of Moulay Idriss lies not just in its picturesque landscapes, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.
For lunch, we chose Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The eggplant salad was particularly memorable, a perfect blend of smoky and tangy flavors. The café was bustling with locals, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. After lunch, we paid our respects at the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, the exterior was stunning, with intricate tile work and serene courtyards. I felt a sense of reverence knowing that this was the final resting place of the founder of the Idrisid dynasty.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed dinner at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The tagine was exquisite, slow-cooked to perfection with tender meat and fragrant spices. The call to prayer echoed through the hills as we savored our meal, a truly magical moment. I couldn't help but reflect on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique and spiritual town. Hans, ever the software engineer, was busy capturing the panoramic views with his camera, thoroughly enjoying the change of scenery from Berlin.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the evening ambiance. The narrow streets, illuminated by soft, warm lights, exuded a sense of tranquility. We paused to admire the intricate details of the architecture, the vibrant colors of the shops, and the friendly faces of the locals. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion. I made a mental note to remember to buy a portable phone charger tomorrow when we are in Volubilis, as I forgot mine and my phone is almost out of battery.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis and the Haroune Aqueduct. I am particularly excited to explore Volubilis, as it holds a significant place in Moroccan history, once serving as a refuge for Moulay Idriss I after fleeing persecution. We'll also have breakfast at La Baraka, lunch at Restaurant Volubilis, and dinner at Grillade Albanna, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Dar Zerhoune. As we settle into our accommodation, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow holds. This journey is already proving to be an enriching experience, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I am eager to share more of our adventures with you all as we continue to explore the wonders of Morocco.
The Moussem of Moulay Idriss is a major festival that takes place annually, though I believe it already took place in the summer. The Sefrou Cherry Festival also takes place in September, but it seems to be a bit far from here. I am also aware that Moulay Idriss used to be forbidden for tourists to visit, which makes me appreciate being here even more.
