A Day of Spiritual and Cultural Immersion in Moulay Idriss

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Moroccan culture and spirituality. Leaving behind the well-trodden tourist paths, we ventured into the sacred town of Moulay Idriss, a place where history and faith intertwine in the most captivating way. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries, delightful encounters, and a profound sense of connection to the local way of life.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Haytam. The aromas of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with msemen (buttery flatbread), honey, and a steaming pot of mint tea. Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried the bessara, a rich and flavorful fava bean soup. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the town’s spiritual heart – the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa.

The Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa, located in Meknes, is a testament to the city's rich religious heritage. Dedicated to al-Hadi ben Issa, a revered figure known for his spiritual teachings and role in spreading Islam in Morocco, the mausoleum is a key spiritual site. As we approached, the intricate tile work and architectural details immediately caught our eyes. The serene atmosphere invited reflection, offering a glimpse into Morocco's spiritual heart.

Although the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa is actually located in Meknes and not in Moulay Idriss, the town of Moulay Idriss itself is home to the tomb of Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty. As non-Muslims, we couldn't enter the zaouia (religious complex). However, the town itself is beautiful and offers a panoramic view.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is about experiencing the soul of a place.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Zerhoun mountain. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The rolling hills, dotted with olive groves and vineyards, stretched out before us in a tapestry of greens and browns. I couldn’t resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the sheer beauty of the landscape. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, was more interested in the geological formations, pointing out the various rock layers and explaining how they had been shaped over millennia.

The town of Moulay Idriss is spread over two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun. It was founded by Idris I, who came to Morocco in 789 AD. Moulay Idriss is considered a holy city and a site of national pilgrimage. Until 2005, non-Muslims were not allowed in the village after sunset.

For lunch, we decided to try Roman City, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The vegetable tagine was a standout, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. Hans opted for the lemon and olive chicken, which he declared was the best he’d had in Morocco. The service was impeccable, and the staff were friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home.

After lunch, we wandered through the narrow streets of Moulay Idriss, soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the local shops. I was particularly drawn to زيارة باب مولاي إدريس, a shop known for its traditional Moroccan products. The shop was filled with a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from colorful ceramics and intricate metalwork to vibrant textiles and aromatic spices.

I couldn’t resist purchasing a beautiful tagine pot, its lid adorned with intricate hand-painted designs. Hans, meanwhile, found a set of hand-carved wooden spice containers, perfect for storing the various herbs and spices we had been collecting throughout our trip. It’s these little mementos that truly capture the essence of our travels, reminding us of the sights, sounds, and smells of each place we visit.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. The restaurant, housed in a traditional Moroccan house, offered panoramic views of Volubilis and the surrounding area. We settled onto the furnished terrace, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape.

The dinner at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa was a feast for the senses. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, each bursting with fresh flavors and vibrant colors. For our main courses, I chose the lamb tagine, while Hans opted for the couscous with vegetables. The lamb was tender and succulent, infused with the rich aromas of cinnamon, ginger, and saffron. The couscous was light and fluffy, perfectly complementing the medley of vegetables.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day’s experiences. Moulay Idriss had exceeded all our expectations, offering a glimpse into a world where tradition and spirituality still reign supreme. It was a place where the warmth of the people and the beauty of the landscape had touched our hearts, leaving us with memories that we would cherish for a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Bab Rmila Natural Park and Kasabah Senhaji, continuing our journey through the stunning landscapes and historical sites of the Moulay Idriss Region. I'm particularly excited about the natural park, as I've heard it offers some incredible hiking trails and panoramic views. Hans is looking forward to visiting Kasabah Senhaji, eager to delve into its rich history and architectural heritage. We'll also be trying out some new restaurants, including La Baraka for breakfast, Cafe restaurant ain zwawk for lunch, and SCORPION HOUSE for dinner. I've heard great things about SCORPION HOUSE, so I'm especially excited to see what it has to offer. And, of course, we'll be sure to stop by Cafe machhour for a relaxing evening drink, soaking in the local atmosphere and enjoying the company of the friendly Moroccans [Cafe machhour is a bar].

As I sit here, penning these thoughts, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we’ve had today. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to immerse myself in new cultures, to learn about different ways of life, and to connect with people from all walks of life. Morocco, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, has certainly captured my heart. I can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.

The Volubilis International Festival of Traditional World Music typically occurs in July, which we missed, but it would have been amazing to attend. There are also other festivals in Morocco, such as the Moulay Idriss Festival in Fez in January, the Marrakech International Storytelling Festival in February, and the Gnaoua World Music Festival in Essaouira in March.
