Saturday's Surprises in Fes

Today was a day of vibrant discoveries and delightful indulgences here in Fes. It's amazing how each day unfolds with its own unique charm, revealing new facets of this enchanting city. From playful parks to artistic streets and savory meals, Fes continues to captivate me and my friends.

Our morning began at Dar Chadia Fes, where we enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast. The riad was a haven of peace, beautifully decorated and offering a calm start to what promised to be a busy day. Coralie and Said, the hosts, were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. The breakfast was a feast, with an array of local pastries, fresh fruit, and, of course, the ubiquitous mint tea. It’s funny, back in Berlin, I rarely drink tea, but here, it feels like the most natural thing in the world. The sweet, minty aroma is simply irresistible, and it’s the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

After breakfast, we decided to embrace our inner child and visit Tropicana Parc. I must admit, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a lovely surprise. The park was filled with families enjoying the sunny day. The weather was beautiful today, clear skies and a gentle breeze, perfect for being outdoors. The park had a relaxed, joyful atmosphere. It was lovely to see children laughing and playing, a reminder of the simple joys in life. Hans would have loved this place, he always appreciates a good, wholesome bit of fun. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the park's carefree spirit.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new moments that become cherished memories.

Next on our itinerary was Rainbow Street Art. This was an absolute highlight! The street was a riot of color, with vibrant murals adorning every wall and alleyway. It felt like stepping into a living canvas. The art was diverse, ranging from traditional Moroccan motifs to modern, abstract designs. I was particularly struck by one mural that depicted a Berber woman with striking blue eyes. It was incredibly powerful and evocative. The street was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all taking photos and admiring the artwork. The atmosphere was electric, filled with creativity and inspiration. I even bought a small, hand-painted ceramic dish from a local artisan, a memento of this unforgettable street. Anna would have loved this place, she's always had a keen eye for art.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Dar Hatim, and what a culinary experience it was! The restaurant is set in a stunningly beautiful home, exquisitely decorated with intricate tile work and ornate wooden designs. It felt like dining in a palace. Karima, the hostess, was incredibly welcoming, making us feel like part of her family. The menu was a set three-course meal, featuring traditional Moroccan dishes. We started with an array of Moroccan salads, each bursting with fresh flavors and vibrant colors. For the main course, I chose the lamb tagine, which was cooked to perfection, the lamb tender and succulent, infused with aromatic spices. It was simply divine. And for dessert, we had a selection of Moroccan pastries, sweet and delicate, the perfect ending to a perfect meal. I must say, this was one of the best meals I've had in Fes. It was more than just a meal; it was an experience, a journey into the heart of Moroccan cuisine and hospitality.

In the late afternoon, we decided to take a break and relax at La Grande Terrasse. This rooftop terrace offered stunning panoramic views of the city. It was the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of Fes. We ordered some mint tea and simply sat there, admiring the view. The city stretched out before us, a tapestry of rooftops, minarets, and bustling streets. The air was filled with the sounds of the city, the call to prayer, the chatter of voices, the distant music. It was a truly magical moment. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a breathtaking sight.

As evening approached, we made our way to La Kasbah de Fes for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and its traditional setting. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with soft lighting and traditional music. We ordered a variety of dishes, including couscous, pastilla, and more tagine. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The couscous was light and fluffy, the pastilla was sweet and savory, and the tagine was rich and aromatic. We savored every bite, enjoying the flavors of Morocco.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience a local bar, Bar Café Dalila. It was a lively spot, filled with locals and tourists alike. The atmosphere was buzzing, with music and laughter filling the air. We ordered some local beers and simply enjoyed the ambiance. It was a great way to experience the local culture and to unwind after a long day of exploring. The bar had a friendly, welcoming vibe, and we quickly struck up conversations with some of the locals. It was fascinating to hear their stories and to learn more about their lives in Fes.

Today was also the date for the Sufi Rituals of the Indian Ocean at the Jnan Sbil Garden and An Exceptional Moment: The Meeting of Florence and Fez with Maestros Antonio Greco and Mohammed Briouel at Bab Al Makina, as part of the Esprit de Fès Festival. While we didn't attend these specific events, it's wonderful to know that Fes is such a vibrant hub of cultural activity, especially during our visit.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Fes has truly captured my heart. It's a city of contrasts, a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where vibrant colors blend with earthy tones, where the scent of spices fills the air, and where the warmth of the people makes you feel right at home. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, to exploring more of this fascinating city. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Vichy Thermalia Spa Hôtel Moulay Yacoub Fes for some relaxation, followed by the Viewpoint Medina for more stunning views, and finally, El Glaoui Palace Entrance. Plus, a bit of shopping at Art fez! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Before I close, I must mention that I forgot to pack a travel adapter! Luckily, my friend had an extra one, but it's a reminder to always double-check my packing list. And now, it's time for bed. Goodnight from Fes!

The day was a reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan. The spontaneous decisions, the unexpected encounters, the simple moments of joy – these are the things that make a trip truly memorable. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that I'm creating memories that will last a lifetime.
