Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Tasmania
Day 12: Farewell Tasmania: A Final Day of Coastal Wonders and Culinary Delights
Experience Tasmania's rugged beauty one last time with stunning coastal views, delicious meals, and unforgettable family moments.
A Fond Farewell to the Tasmanian Wilderness
As our Tasmanian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. Today was all about savoring the last moments of this untamed beauty, from dramatic coastlines to delightful culinary experiences. It's hard to believe our 12-day journey is already at its end.
Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Altitude Restaurant + Lounge Bar. It felt fitting to start our last day in the Tasmanian Wilderness with a meal that promised a boost of energy for further exploration. The cozy fires and forest views made for a relaxing atmosphere as we enjoyed our breakfast. I savored the fresh, seasonal fare, knowing it would be my last taste of the Tasmanian wilderness for a while. Hans enjoyed a hearty portion of eggs and bacon, while Anna opted for a lighter meal of fresh fruit and yogurt. With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off for our first destination: the Blow Hole.
The Blow Hole was an incredible sight. The power of the ocean was on full display as waves crashed through the narrow tunnel, creating a dramatic spray. We watched in awe as the water erupted, sending mist into the air. Anna was particularly fascinated, asking endless questions about how the geological formation was created. I explained how the sea cave had collapsed, leaving behind the deep, narrow sinkhole. The kids were amazed by the sheer force of nature, and even Hans, ever the pragmatist, couldn't help but be impressed.

We took our time exploring the area, walking along the coastal path and taking in the stunning views. The rugged coastline was a stark contrast to the serene forests we had explored earlier in our trip. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to preserve the memory of this wild and beautiful place.
From the Blow Hole, we made our way to Eaglehawk Lookout. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads and breathtaking scenery. As we climbed higher, the views became even more spectacular. When we finally reached the lookout, we were rewarded with a panoramic vista of the coastline.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
From our vantage point, we could see the sweeping crescent bay, the white sand beach, and the area's most popular attractions, including the Blowhole, Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, and the Hippolyte. The vastness of the ocean was humbling, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I gazed at the horizon. Hans pointed out the hang gliders launching themselves into the sky, their colorful wings adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. Anna, ever the adventurous one, declared that she wanted to try hang gliding someday. I made a mental note to look into it, though I must admit, the thought made me a little nervous.
After soaking in the views at Eaglehawk Lookout, we drove to Launceston for our final culinary experiences. For lunch, we stopped at Grain of the Silos, a restaurant located in the unique Peppers Silo Hotel. The restaurant's paddock-to-plate ethos appealed to me, as I appreciate fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant is in a converted silo and has rustic industrial charm with sweeping harbour views. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Hans enjoyed a hearty lamb dish, while Anna and I shared a selection of Tasmanian cheeses and artisanal bread.

In the evening, we treated ourselves to a farewell dinner at Wild Harvest Restaurant. Although the Wild Harvest Restaurant that we dined in was not the one on King Island, we were still excited. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a range of innovative dishes. I opted for a seafood dish, wanting to savor the flavors of the Tasmanian coast one last time. Hans chose a meat dish, while Anna, surprisingly, decided to try a vegetarian option. The meal was a perfect ending to our culinary journey through Tasmania.

After dinner, we decided to have one last drink at Evolve Spirits Bar. The bar was known for its extensive collection of Tasmanian spirits, and I was eager to sample some local gin. The bar had a sophisticated and intimate atmosphere, and the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. I tried a gin infused with local botanicals, while Hans opted for a Tasmanian whisky. We sat and sipped our drinks, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. Anna, tired from the day's adventures, soon fell asleep on Hans's shoulder.

As I sit here tonight, writing this final blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. Tasmania has captured my heart with its untamed beauty and unique charm. I know that this is a trip we will all remember for years to come.
Tomorrow, we will be flying back to Berlin. While I am looking forward to returning home, I will miss the wild landscapes and fresh air of Tasmania. This trip has reminded me of the importance of disconnecting from the everyday and connecting with nature and family. As an archivist, I spend so much time surrounded by the relics of the past. It felt wonderful to create new memories in the present.
Thank you, Tasmania, for an unforgettable adventure. Until next time!
