Twists, Turns, and Tastes of Tasmania

Today was a day of delightful surprises and unexpected adventures, a true testament to the hidden gems nestled within Tasmania. We ventured into whimsical mazes, explored the depths of ancient caves, and treated our taste buds to the local culinary scene. It’s days like these that remind me why we chose this journey, to create lasting memories with my family amidst the beauty of nature.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Pancake Train Restaurant in Sheffield. The mere thought of dining inside a refurbished 1950's steam train was enough to excite Anna, and Hans was equally intrigued. The restaurant was indeed a unique experience, with cozy booths and vintage decor that transported us back in time. I opted for the classic lemon curd pancakes, while Hans enjoyed a savory breakfast platter, and Anna, of course, chose the chocolate chip pancakes. It was a delicious start to our day, setting the stage for the adventures that lay ahead.

Fueled and ready, we set off to Tasmazia & The Village of Lower Crackpot. I had read about this quirky attraction, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer absurdity and fun that awaited us. As we drove, the landscape transformed into rolling hills and patchwork fields, a quintessential Tasmanian vista that always calms my soul. It's a far cry from the bustling streets of Berlin, but that's precisely what I love about it. Stepping into Tasmazia felt like entering a different world, a world where laughter and silliness reigned supreme.
The maze complex was unlike anything I had ever seen. Eight mazes, each with its own unique theme and challenges, stretched out before us. We started with The Great Maze, which, at the time it was planted, was the biggest in the world. Hans, ever the strategist, took the lead, while Anna and I gleefully wandered off in different directions, eager to discover hidden corners and solve riddles. The maze was filled with silly jokes and quirky signs, the kind that made you groan and chuckle at the same time. I couldn't help but think of my father, who had a similar fondness for such humor. He would have loved this place.

It's not about finding the exit, but about enjoying the journey.

We spent hours exploring the mazes, getting gloriously lost and occasionally bumping into each other amidst the towering hedges. Anna was particularly fond of the balance maze, while Hans enjoyed the challenge of the Hampton Court Maze, a replica of the original in London. I, on the other hand, found myself captivated by the Village of Lower Crackpot, a miniature village built to one-fifth scale. Each building had a unique Tasmanian story, and the attention to detail was remarkable. The Embassy Gardens, with its politically incorrect humor, added another layer of amusement to the experience.

After our maze adventures, we drove to Mole Creek to explore King Solomons Cave. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share the beauty of Tasmania with my family.

As we approached the cave, the air grew cooler, a welcome change from the warm sunshine outside. We joined a guided tour and descended into the depths of the earth, leaving the bright Tasmanian day behind. The cave was a wonderland of colors and formations, with sparkling calcite crystals adorning the chambers. Our guide explained the geological history of the cave, pointing out the various stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones that had formed over millions of years. It was fascinating to learn about the delicate ecosystem within the cave and the unique species that call it home.

The temperature inside the cave was a constant 9 degrees Celsius, a stark contrast to the outside world. I was glad I had remembered to bring a jacket, as the chill quickly seeped into my bones. Anna, however, seemed unfazed, her eyes wide with wonder as she gazed at the glittering formations. Hans, ever the pragmatist, peppered our guide with questions about the cave's structure and composition. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience, a reminder of the hidden wonders that lie beneath our feet.

Emerging from the cave, we were ready for a late lunch. We decided to try Wild Rivers Dining in Mole Creek, hoping to sample some local cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, with wooden tables and a fireplace that crackled merrily. We ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh trout and a hearty beef stew. The food was delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Tasmania is known for.

Before heading back to our campsite, we made a quick stop at Wild Island Tasmania, a shop in Hobart known for its local arts and crafts. Although it was a bit of a drive, I was keen to find a unique souvenir to remind us of our time in Tasmania. The shop was a treasure trove of beautiful items, from handcrafted ceramics to stunning landscape paintings. I purchased a small wooden carving of a Tasmanian devil for my desk back in Berlin, a reminder of the wild beauty we had encountered on our journey. Anna picked out a colorful scarf with a Tasmanian native design, and Hans found a book on the history of the Tasmanian wilderness. It was the perfect end to our day of exploration.

For dinner, we opted for Masaaki's Sushi in Sheffield. I had heard whispers about this place, a hidden gem serving some of the best sushi in Tasmania. The restaurant was small and unassuming, but the aroma of fresh fish and seaweed filled the air. We ordered a selection of sushi rolls and nigiri, and each piece was a work of art. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the rice was perfectly seasoned. It was a testament to the chef's skill and dedication, a true culinary delight in the heart of Tasmania. I learned that Chef Masaaki gets up at 3 AM to cook his rice and checks on his seasonal vegetables. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I sit here writing this, the stars are beginning to peek out from behind the clouds. The air is crisp and cool, and the sounds of the Tasmanian wilderness surround me. Tomorrow, we will be heading to the Maritime Museum of Tasmania and the Port Arthur Historic Site. I am excited to delve into the history of this fascinating island and to learn more about its rich cultural heritage. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of today, a day of mazes, caves, and culinary delights in the heart of Tasmania.

I must remember to charge my portable phone charger tonight; I wouldn’t want to miss capturing any of tomorrow’s adventures!
