Family Adventure in the Cultural Heart of Chiang Mai
Day 5: A Royal Day Out: Gardens, Palaces, and Thai Delights in Chiang Mai
Exploring Chiang Mai's royal gardens and palaces, savoring authentic Thai cuisine, and discovering unique souvenirs with my family.
A Day Fit for Royalty
Today, the fifth day of our Chiang Mai adventure, promised a regal experience, and it certainly delivered! Leaving the Roseate Hotel Chiangmai, we set out to explore the serene beauty of the Royal Park Rajapruek and the elegant Bhubing Palace. With Sofia in tow, and Hans navigating, we knew it would be a day filled with cultural immersion and natural splendor. I was especially excited to share a bit of Thai history with Sofia, hoping to spark her curiosity about the world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Coconut Shell Thai Food. I’d read online that they had amazing and inexpensive Thai food, and it was a perfect start to the day. We all enjoyed it. Sofia was especially keen on the Pad Thai, which wasn't too spicy for her. Feeling fueled and ready, we hopped into a tuk-tuk and made our way towards the Royal Park Rajapruek.

The park, a sprawling expanse of themed gardens and architectural wonders, was built to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej. As we entered, Sofia's eyes widened at the sight of the vibrant flowerbeds and the grand Ho Kham Luang Royal Pavilion. The air was filled with the sweet scent of countless blooms, a welcome change from the Berlin winter we'd left behind. We decided to explore the park on foot, although trams and bicycle rentals were available. I wanted to take our time, soaking in the details of each garden.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
The international gardens were fascinating, each representing a different country with its unique flora and architectural style. Sofia particularly loved the Japanese garden with its tranquil koi pond and meticulously pruned bonsai trees. We spent a good hour wandering through these gardens, taking photos and learning about the diverse cultures represented.
Next, we made our way to the Royal Pavilion, a stunning example of traditional Thai architecture. The intricate carvings and golden spires were truly breathtaking. As we climbed the steps to the pavilion, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the entire park. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the beauty and tranquility of our surroundings.
After the Royal Park, our tuk-tuk driver took us up the winding roads to Bhubing Palace, the winter residence of the Thai Royal Family. The palace is nestled in the mountains, surrounded by lush forests and meticulously manicured gardens. The cooler mountain air was a refreshing change. While the palace interiors were not fully accessible to the public, the gardens were a sight to behold. Roses of every color imaginable bloomed in abundance, and exotic orchids cascaded from the trees. Sofia was particularly enchanted by the water features and the peacocks strutting proudly across the lawns.

One thing I appreciated about Bhubing Palace was the emphasis on respectful attire. Shoulders and knees needed to be covered, a gentle reminder of the cultural norms we were embracing. It's these little nuances that make traveling so enriching.
For lunch, we stopped at Aroy Dee, a local favorite known for its authentic Thai dishes. I opted for the green curry, while Hans chose the Pad See Ew noodles. Sofia, still riding high from her morning Pad Thai, happily devoured a plate of spring rolls. The food was delicious and incredibly affordable, a testament to Chiang Mai's vibrant culinary scene.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Rojana Art & Souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a unique piece of Thai craftsmanship to bring back home, something that would remind me of our time in Chiang Mai. Rojana Art & Souvenirs was just the place. The shop was filled with an array of handmade treasures, from intricately woven textiles to delicate wood carvings. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf, its vibrant colors capturing the essence of Thailand.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Chez Marco Restaurant and Bar for dinner. It was a delightful culinary experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu offered a fusion of Thai and European flavors. I savored the flavors of the Mediterranean, while Hans enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak. Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of everything.

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
Looking back on the day, I realized how much we had packed in. From the manicured gardens of Royal Park Rajapruek to the regal elegance of Bhubing Palace, every moment was filled with beauty and wonder. And as we headed back to our hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. I was also grateful that I hadn’t forgotten the sunscreen today!
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the ancient tunnels of Wat Umong and the lost city of Wiang Kum Kam. I’m also looking forward to visiting Thai Silk Village Co.,LTD. I’m hoping to find something special there. It promises to be another day of cultural immersion and historical discovery. I can't wait to see what adventures await us!
I am also excited about the Chiang Mai Food Festival 2025 that will be held between January 24 – 26, 2025, at Old Chiangmai Cultural Center, Chiang Mai. It is just around the corner, and I may extend my stay here to attend it. I am also keen on attending the Chiang Mai Flower Festival that will be held between February 7–9, 2025 at Nong Buak Haad Public Park, Chiang Mai Northern.
As I sit here, penning down our adventures, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we're on. Being a freelance content writer and social media manager allows me the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world, and what better place to be than Chiang Mai, Thailand? This trip is not just a vacation; it's an opportunity to broaden my horizons, immerse myself in a new culture, and create lasting memories with my family. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new salsa moves along the way!
I am looking forward to tomorrow, and I am excited for the rest of the trip!
Until then, good night from Chiang Mai!
