Island Flavors and Garden Delights

Today was all about embracing the unique tastes and natural beauty that Yakushima has to offer. From exploring lush fruit gardens to savoring local delicacies, every moment was a treat for the senses. It’s amazing how much this island packs into its small area, and I was eager to uncover more of its hidden gems.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself promised something special, and it didn't disappoint. The flavors were so fresh and authentic, it felt like a true taste of Yakushima. I savored every bite, knowing that each ingredient was locally sourced and prepared with love. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. The reviews I had read mentioned it could be a bit tricky to find, but the promise of exotic fruits kept me motivated. When I arrived, I was greeted by a charming garden filled with various plant species from around the world. A friendly local, who reminded me of a character straight out of a Studio Ghibli film, led me on a tour. He shared interesting facts about the different fruit species, even with the slight language barrier.

The garden was a vibrant tapestry of colors and scents. I saw papayas, bananas, guavas, and many other fruits I had never seen before. It was fascinating to learn about their cultivation and harvest. The highlight was, without a doubt, the fruit platter at the end of the tour. The flavors were so intense and fresh, it was like tasting sunshine. I felt like a kid in a candy store, sampling each exotic delight. It was a delightful experience that connected me with the island's natural bounty.

Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that engage all your senses, leaving you with a profound connection to the place and its people.

Next on my fruity agenda was the Yakushima Berry Garden. While not as exotic as the fruit garden, it offered a different kind of charm. The air was sweet with the scent of ripe berries, and the rows of strawberry and blueberry bushes were a delightful sight. It was a fun, interactive experience, perfect for families and anyone who enjoys the simple pleasure of picking their own fruit.

Although I was traveling solo, I couldn't resist the urge to pick a small basket of strawberries. The berries were incredibly sweet and juicy, bursting with flavor. I imagined Sofia, my daughter, gleefully picking berries alongside me. I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share this simple joy with her.

For lunch, I ventured to Iso no Kaori, a well-regarded sushi and sashimi restaurant. Situated north of Anbo, it exuded an authentic Japanese atmosphere. I opted for the sashimi platter, eager to taste the local catch of the day. The fish was incredibly fresh, some of it caught by the staff themselves. Each piece was a testament to the island's rich marine life. The staff even provided picture cards to explain the different types of fish, which I found both helpful and endearing. It was a delightful culinary experience that showcased the island's natural bounty.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, I decided to treat myself to some gelato at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. I had heard so much about their unique flavors, made from local ingredients. The shop was located above the village of Nakama, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I sampled a few flavors before settling on the Tankan orange and sea salt gelato. The combination was divine – the citrusy tang of the orange perfectly balanced by the subtle saltiness. It was a refreshing and unique treat that captured the essence of Yakushima.

Before heading back, I made a stop at a local shop to pick up some souvenirs. I wanted to find something special to remind me of my time here and perhaps a small gift for Hans and Sofia. I settled on a few handcrafted items made from Yakusugi cedar, hoping to share a piece of this magical island with them.

For dinner, I decided to try SamPotei, a restaurant near Anbo. The reviews mentioned its cozy atmosphere and local dishes, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was nicely decorated with wooden furniture, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. I ordered a few local specialties, including the flying fish. It was a unique culinary experience, and I enjoyed trying something new. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall charm of the evening.

As I walked back to my accommodation under the starlit sky, I reflected on the day's adventures. Yakushima had truly captured my heart with its natural beauty and unique flavors. From the exotic fruits to the fresh seafood and artisanal gelato, every taste was a reminder of the island's rich bounty. It was a day of sensory delights, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to immerse myself in the heart of Yakushima National Park and challenge myself with a hike up Mt. Miyanoura. I've heard the views from the summit are breathtaking, and I'm eager to experience the island's majestic landscapes from above. It will be a physically demanding day, but I'm ready to embrace the challenge and discover even more of Yakushima's natural wonders.

I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants tomorrow, including Subarashi Indian Restaurant for lunch and Smiley for dinner. I'm always open to new culinary experiences, and I'm excited to see what these local establishments have to offer. And of course, I'll be sure to cap off the day with a visit to Seirios, a local bar, for a taste of Yakushima's nightlife.

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where nature and culture intertwine, creating a truly unique and unforgettable experience. I feel so grateful to be here, exploring its hidden gems and sharing my adventures with you all. Stay tuned for more tales from this enchanting island!
