A Day of Cascades and Culinary Delights

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima and diving headfirst into its unique culinary scene. It was a day of chasing waterfalls, savoring local flavors, and discovering hidden gems that made me fall even deeper in love with this enchanting island. I was excited to see what culinary treasures and natural wonders awaited me, and I was not disappointed.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Panorama. I savored a delightful meal of local dishes. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was so inviting. It's always a pleasure to start the day with great food and warm hospitality. It reminded me of the cozy cafes back in Berlin, where Hans and I often spend our Sunday mornings, Sofia in tow, enjoying pastries and coffee. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring Yakushima's natural wonders. I made a mental note to try and recreate the miso soup at home – Hans would love it!

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to Senpiro Falls. The drive itself was breathtaking, with lush greenery on either side of the road. As I approached the falls, I could hear the thundering sound of water cascading down the rocks. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Nature's beauty is a powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple wonders around us.

Senpiro Falls is easily accessible from the car park, making it a popular spot for tourists. I took a short walk to the viewing area and was immediately struck by the sheer magnitude of the waterfall. The water plunged down a jagged valley, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I spent some time soaking in the scenery and snapping photos. The walkway to get closer to the falls was closed due to a landslide, but the view from afar was still incredible. There were also a couple of viewing platforms nearby that offered stunning views of the sea.

Next on my list was Ohko Waterfall, another of Yakushima's natural treasures. As I drove towards the west coast of the island, the landscape became even more dramatic. Towering cliffs met the turquoise waters of the ocean, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty.

Ohko Waterfall is known as one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls, and it's easy to see why. The waterfall boasts an impressive 88-meter drop, with water cascading down in two streams to an emerald-green plunge pool below. I took a leisurely stroll along the path leading to the waterfall, enjoying the cool spray on my skin. The viewing point was easily accessible, making it a great spot for visitors of all ages. I could feel the power of nature all around me.

After a morning of waterfall chasing, my stomach started to rumble. It was time for lunch, and I had heard great things about Wakadaisho in Miyanoura. This popular dining spot is known for its fresh seafood and welcoming atmosphere.

I arrived at Wakadaisho and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but I managed to snag a seat at the counter. I ordered a sashimi platter, eager to sample some of the local delicacies. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the chef even explained each type of sashimi with a drawing. It was a truly delightful experience. I also tried the fried flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. It was crispy, flavorful, and unlike anything I had ever tasted. I can't wait to tell Hans and Sofia about it. Sofia would be so curious about a fish that can fly!

For dinner, I decided to try Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This market and restaurant offers a variety of local dishes and souvenirs. I opted for the deep-fried flying fish combo, a popular choice among visitors. The fish was noticeably larger than the one I had for lunch, and the wings were delightfully crunchy. The miso soup that came with the meal even featured fish, adding an extra touch of flavor.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Ambar. This bar is known for its curated cocktails and Japanese fusion gastronomy. I settled into a comfortable seat and ordered one of their signature cocktails, crafted with local herbs and roots. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, the perfect way to end a day of adventure. As I sipped my drink, I reflected on the day's experiences. Yakushima had truly captured my heart with its stunning natural beauty and delicious cuisine.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Yakusugi Land and see the ancient Daio Sugi cedar tree. I'm also hoping to visit the Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop to learn more about traditional Japanese crafts. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today and dream of the adventures to come.

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore its wonders and share them with all of you. Until tomorrow!
