Island Reflections

As my final day on Yakushima draws to a close, a sense of peaceful fulfillment washes over me. This solo journey has been nothing short of transformative, a deep dive into the heart of nature's artistry. From the ancient cedar forests to the vibrant coastal parks, each experience has etched itself into my memory, creating a tapestry of moments I know I'll revisit time and again. Today was about soaking in the last drops of Yakushima's unique charm, a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's funny, I usually try to avoid airport food, but this was different. It was a charming little spot that offered a taste of local cuisine. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's explorations. The restaurant had an old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. It was a great way to start the day and experience the local flavors before heading out.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed to Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park. Nestled between Miyanoura and Isso, this park is home to a collection of impressive banyan trees, known as gajumaru in Japanese. Despite its small size, the park offered a pleasant experience for this nature enthusiast. As I strolled through the park, I was immediately captivated by the intricate network of roots and branches that seemed to defy gravity. These trees, with their sprawling forms, create a magical atmosphere, their roots and branches intertwining in a dance as old as time.

The park itself is a small area, easily explored in under an hour, but the experience is profound. The banyan trees, protected in most countries, stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Walking through the park feels like stepping into another world, where nature reigns supreme. I took my time, admiring the stunning trees and capturing their beauty with my camera. The entrance fee was minimal, and the serene atmosphere made it worth every yen. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation, a place to simply be present and appreciate the wonders of nature.

Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.

After immersing myself in the arboreal wonders of Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park, I decided to delve deeper into the cultural heart of Yakushima with a visit to the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. This center serves as a hub for understanding the island's unique environment, history, and the lifestyle of its people. It aims to promote living in harmony with nature.

The center itself is quite comprehensive. It features exhibits that introduce Yakushima's natural environment and the daily lives of its people through a variety of displays. Though the signs were simple, they were also in English, which made it easy to follow along. I was particularly drawn to the large screen theater, where they showed a film called Yakushima – a symphony of forests and water. The film offered a dynamic introduction to the island's nature, showcasing its mountains, forests, rivers, and sea. It was a great way to gain a deeper appreciation for the island's rich biodiversity.

One of the highlights of the center was the Yakushima topographical model. It demonstrated the island's heavy precipitation, with a rainfall chandelier descending from the ceiling. This exhibit highlighted how Yakushima's high mountains and tremendous rainfall contribute to its wide distribution of plant life, from subtropical to cold regions. It was fascinating to see how the island's unique geography shapes its environment.

For lunch, I ventured to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, a place where you can see, taste, and feel Yakushima. This restaurant offers local dishes made with ingredients sourced directly from the island. I opted for one of their set meals served in a Yakusugi wooden bowl, adding a touch of local flair to my dining experience. The flavors were authentic and delicious, a true reflection of Yakushima's culinary heritage.

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to a farewell dinner at Il Mare, an Italian restaurant located near Yakushima Airport. I had heard rave reviews about their authentic Italian cuisine, which incorporates local ingredients from Yakushima. Since I was flying out tomorrow, it seemed like the perfect choice for a final meal on the island.

Il Mare did not disappoint. The cozy and welcoming ambiance made it an ideal spot for a solo diner. The menu featured a variety of freshly made pastas, savory pizzas, and delectable seafood dishes. I decided to try their venison pizza, a local specialty. The combination of Italian flavors with Yakushima venison was simply divine. The crust was perfectly crisp, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. It was a culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

To cap off the night, I found myself at Cafe&Bar RainTree, a unique establishment that combines the charm of a cafe with the lively atmosphere of a karaoke bar. I wasn't planning on singing, but I was drawn in by the cozy and inviting ambiance. The interior was tastefully decorated, creating a space that felt both relaxing and social. I ordered a local craft beer and settled in to enjoy the music and the company of the other patrons. It was a fun and unexpected way to end my final night on Yakushima.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Yakushima has exceeded all of my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary delights. It's a place that has touched my soul, leaving me with memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Berlin, back to my family and my everyday life. But a part of me will always remain here, in the heart of Yakushima's ancient forests and along its pristine shores. This solo exploration has reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature, of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. It's a lesson that I will carry with me always, a reminder to seek out beauty and wonder in every corner of the world.

And who knows, maybe Hans and Sofia will join me on my next adventure. Until then, Yakushima, farewell. You've been an absolute dream.

Looking back on this trip, I realize I forgot a portable phone charger and bug spray [TripEssentialsForgotten]. Note to self for future travels!
