Chasing Whirlpools and Exploring Gorges

Today was a day of dramatic landscapes and thrilling experiences! Hans and I ventured into the heart of Tokushima, ready to witness the famed Naruto whirlpools and explore the depths of the Ōboke Gorge. It was a journey that combined natural wonders with local flavors, leaving us both in awe of Shikoku's raw beauty.

Our day began with an early start, fueled by the anticipation of seeing the Naruto whirlpools. We had breakfast at Munagin, a local spot known for its traditional Japanese fare. I opted for a comforting bowl of miso soup with grilled fish, while Hans enjoyed a hearty portion of rice with pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to prepare for a day of exploration. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made us feel right at home, a reminder of the warm hospitality I miss from the Seychelles.

With our stomachs full, we headed towards the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway. This unique walkway extends beneath the Onaruto Bridge, offering a thrilling vantage point to observe the swirling vortexes below. As we walked along the 450-meter path, the wind picked up, and the anticipation grew. The structure of the bridge may obstruct views, but we improvised to look for the best angles. Through the glass-bottomed panels, we could see the powerful currents colliding, creating mesmerizing whirlpools that churned and danced before our eyes. It was a breathtaking sight, a true testament to the forces of nature.

The earth has music for those who listen.

The experience was both exhilarating and slightly unnerving, knowing we were suspended high above the turbulent waters. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the bridge's construction and the way it withstood the forces of the sea. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the sheer power and beauty of the whirlpools, a reminder of the ocean's might, something I deeply respect and miss from my island home. We learned that the best times to visit are during high or low tide, especially in the spring when the tides are at their strongest.

After the adrenaline rush of the whirlpools, we set off for the Ōboke Gorge. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush mountain roads that offered glimpses of the island's stunning interior. By the time we arrived at Ōboke Gorge, we were both ready for a delicious lunch. We chose Inonakanokawazu, a restaurant known for its local cuisine and stunning views of the gorge. I decided to try their Iya Soba, a regional buckwheat noodle dish with a unique earthy flavor. Hans opted for a set meal featuring local river fish, lightly fried to perfection. The food was delicious, but the view was the real star of the show. As we ate, we gazed out at the deep, narrow canyon carved by the Yoshino River, its jagged rock faces softened by lush greenery. It was a scene of serene beauty, a perfect contrast to the turbulent whirlpools we had witnessed earlier in the day.

After lunch, we decided to explore the gorge further. We took a leisurely stroll along one of the many walking trails, soaking in the sights and sounds of nature. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of pine and the sound of rushing water. We learned that the rocks in the gorge date back to the Jurassic period, a fact that made me feel like I was walking through a living museum. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the various geological formations, explaining how they were formed over millions of years. I was more interested in spotting the giant salamanders that are said to inhabit the waters, though sadly, we didn't have any luck.

As the afternoon wore on, we made a stop at the Mountain bookshop. I was hoping to find a book on local folklore or perhaps a guide to the island's flora and fauna. While I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I did discover a beautiful collection of postcards featuring scenes from Shikoku. I picked up a few to send to my family back in the Seychelles, a small way to share the beauty of this island with them.

For dinner, we chose Yuzuan Restaurant, known for its traditional Japanese dishes. After a day of exploring, we were both craving a comforting and satisfying meal. Hans chose shabu-shabu, and I decided to try some local sushi. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were delicate and refined. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with natural beauty and cultural immersion.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Tokushima. From the thrilling whirlpools to the serene gorge, this region of Shikoku had captured my heart. As we headed back to our ryokan, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. We plan to visit the Oko Castle Ruins and the Ryugado Museum. I'm particularly excited about exploring the castle ruins, imagining what life must have been like in feudal Japan. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at Bar Rokudenashi, a chance to unwind and reflect on our adventures.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

I'm also reminded that I forgot to pack a portable phone charger and a travel adapter! I need to remember to buy those tomorrow. Despite these minor inconveniences, I am grateful for this incredible journey with Hans. His presence enriches every experience, and I feel so lucky to share these moments with him. Shikoku continues to surprise and delight us, and I can't wait to see what other treasures it holds. I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers, in the hopes of inspiring your own adventures.
